its the bike, the r1 has a crossplane firing order to mimic the firing order of a v4 with the space advantage of an inline 4, giving it that unique deep raspy sound

Backfiring is due to unburned fuel being ignited by the hot exhaust pipes. It's actually bad for the engine, in the long run.

@@johnnyb.r6262 exactly right bro, it's the tune up and exhaust that cause it, unless he has a spark plug screwed into the box wired up to a switch which when activated burns off the excess 'un-burnt' fuel in said box bro, simple to do really, but usually it's like you said, the TUNE & EXHAUST.

@@Lemonyhail no its the combinations of a full exhaust (hearders/full exhaust) then a tune or a Powercommander and autotune helps too. Also the air filter to the sprint brand or k&n. A full exhaust itself will make it spit flames but the tune or a powercommander 5 will make it shoot flames. 😃

They are damn fine bikes, love both my R6 and R1, would NEVER stray away from YAMAHA's, infact I'd Rather die before getting rid of either bike, I had a Kawasaki ninja when I first got my license and I felt that something was amiss, then these beauties came along and bam I was hooked, and now as i said I'll never go to another manufacturer that simple really, even my wife has an R6 and will never part with her bike.

I had a 2010 Honda Sabre with a 1312 CC with a custom exhaust and she shot out blue flame, it also made that beautiful sound of crackling-backfiring when downshifting! 👌🏻 Was like music to my ears hearing that good ol thing.

No problem Yamaha rocks I've been slamming them since I grew up in the '70s and early '80s my first one was the 350 RD fairing racer Milan dragway rocked it I was beating 750 Hondas then I moved up to 750 Kawasaki two-stroke beast monster shouldn't be street legal
