N7345R, A 1974 Beechcraft B55 Baron crashed in a heavily wooded area in Leyden Massachusetts January 14th, 2024. Why does this keep happening? There may be an answer, what do you think?

An ATP-rated, multi-engine flight instructor and Chief Pilot of Fly Lugu Flight School (with 13,600 hours according to the company website), a holder of a commercial multi-engine certificate issued in 2013 according to the FAA Airman Registry (the student pilot), and the Fly Lugu flight school owner and a single-engine CFI and multi-engine rated pilot - seated in the rear - perished in the crash and the aircraft was destroyed.
ADS-B data indicated a steep descent beginning at a groundspeed of 57 knots, with decreasing groundspeed. The extrapolated descent rate just prior to signal loss was over -6,000 feet per minute, at a groundspeed of 17 knots.
In this video we will not only cover this accident but other Baron accidents similar in nature. In addition, we will go over an NTSB document issued to the FAA in 1981 concerning Baron spin accidents and much more.

It seems to me that the spin is so precipitous and so deadly it would almost be more advantageous to cut all engines and glide to a landing spot as you would with a single engine craft.

After completing an IPC with Rika Ballard on Nov 24, 2023 she mentioned her flight school owned a B-55 which she died in on January 14. That Barron was N7345R. I related to her in November that while flying the Barron on my ATP check ride (40 years ago) the ASI from the Miami GADO office had me feather the left engine, reduce right engine power to MCA with stall horn blaring and conduct a 60 degrees banked turn into the left, feathered engine, I had never done this in practice but did not lose a foot in 360 degree turns in each direction…I was petrified during the left turn and felt that if a snail had farted in the Everglades 3000 feet below, the airplane would have lost a thousand feet. Rika was an outstanding personality whose energy, vigor and enthusiasm for aviation shown brightly in all who surrounded her. I recommended my best student leave my training and attend her school - FLY-LUGU…Look Up, Go Up. It was outstanding and hopefully will continue. I would very much appreciate a copy of that memo from NTSB to FAA.

This kinda reminds me of the problem of the tail breaking off in the V35 V-Tail Beech Bonanza. Beech wouldn't acknowledge that there was a problem but V35's flew into clouds horizontally but came out the bottom of the cloud spinning and no tail. As I recall, the NTSB found that the connection of the tail to the fuselage was not strong enough. Beech denied that and the FAA ignored (big surprise) the NTSB's findings. Both the FAA and Beech claimed that the cause was pilot error. My memory of the solution is a little hazy but something to the effect of a solution that strengthened the connection was found and became FAA approved. I don't remember all the details. Just don't get me started on the FAA!

Yes, they ended up with a cuff AD. It went inboard on the leading edge of the V. It prevented the twisting of the tail which caused the failures. We had it on our F35 Bonanza.

Any aircraft is susceptible to this, especially with the cg outta whack ! 🦆 Some helicopters I flew were very sensitive to cg, others not so much. Do your math and remind passengers to be honest. (Some places I had to actually weigh passengers because they were liars).

Seems there's a lot of speculation on the cause of the crash being VMC. Could it have been engine failure? Or some other cause?

According to the ADSB data they were training. However, as you say it could have been a failure during the training. Some how they got into a flat spin and unfortunately once in, it became non-recoverable, tragic!

I have a very hard time believing they were doing VMC. Doesn't make sense. I just hate seeing the legacies of all these very accomplished people be tarnished prematurely. I do appreciate your video. Very informative. @@maxtanicfilms

Fine somebody that trains in a Grumman cougar, much safer for VMC demos. Beech makes a great flying plane but less forgiving in the training environment.

I think you're right. Or any twin, that doesn't have a critical engine, due to the direction of the propeller. A diamond twin makes sense.

Enjoyed your video. Does this mean the Baron is a less safe aircraft in a single engine situation? Doesn’t the vMC demo mimic a potential real situation? With all the Baron pilots out there, what can learn from this accident, especially if their engine quits?

Thank you. To answer your question simply, yes. In that, if a pilot stalls the airplane on one engine, or even both engines if in an abnormal attitude it's possible to get the Baron into a spin and or, a flat spin. If it does develop into a flat spin it becomes unrecoverable. It is an airplane one shouldn't do single engine training in. It will fly fine on one engine, very good in fact. It's the V speeds. We have some really good videos on VMC/A and how to deal with an engine failure in twins. If one follows correct procedure it's safe. If one makes a mistake like my Dad did in the 310 but in the Baron it could be deadly. I hope that answers your question. I say do NOT do your multi in a Baron. Do it in another bird then buy a Baron 😎👍

Saying a 310 is nose heavy and a Baron is tail heavy is not a fair analogy with your paper airplane demo. It’s all about CG. You should never have someone in the back seat for any stall or Vmca demos. It states it in the POH. You might need ballast in the nose of a Baron. CG matters.

Thanks Pete The demo was just to show a crude difference between the two designs in a fully developed flat spin. The later to conclude as unrecoverable in the event PARE is performed properly. We enjoyed our Baron very much, it's a fantastic airplane. CG is critical as you say. Many of these accidents I mentioned here had rear seat passengers.

@@maxtanicfilms they really should stop doing Vmca demos in the plane. Use a simulator if you must. Too many training accidents. The military stopped doing them for that reason. More accidents training than what they are trying to prevent. Got to be a terrorizing ride all the way down to the ground. Tragic. You can train to respect red line and blue line without the demo. Enjoyed your video.
