On 26 September 2000, waves push the MS Express Samina off course, causing it to hit a group of rocks off Paros and sink, killing 80 people. Subsequent investigation showed that the ferry was on autopilot, with the crew not monitoring the ship's course. They were instead watching an association football match.

There was a young man in his 20s. He was serving his mandatory military service. He SAVED LIVES that night. In a call with his father he said. "I can't leave. I Have to help them!" And he drowned. He was a true hero. His name was Vasilis Rahoutis.

@@kmuhammadshah7839 failure is like onions! With closed watertight compartments she would have been afloat, so you cant blame it on the first officer alone. Also, if the crew would have organized abandoning ship better it also would have caused a lot less lifes. Overall, it is the captains fault in my eyes. It is his ship and he allowed it, that complacency would be able to surpass safety. If he would have enforced a better safety culture on the ship non of that would have ever happend.

Ability to remain calm during any form of disaster is not granted - it´s something you discover about yourself, once the dangerous situation happens. The soldiers or some dangerous job workers from rely on training for those dangerous situations, as it is basically "hardcoded" into them, but most people don´t have any training. When you don´t know, what to do, it´s easy to fall into panic mode. And even with all the training, the ability to remain calm is not granted, so you might freak out and lose it.

It’s sad about the woman who couldn’t swim and drowned in front of the pair. It’s true about drowning people though. They will latch on to anything, anyone and not let go. In their panicked state, they don’t realize that they’re causing their rescuer to drown as well. The best way to handle a drowning person is to throw them a buoy and keep them as far as way from you as possible.

It wasn't all that similar. The Sewol sank because they made too sharp of a turn and the ship began to list. They weren't using autopilot and hadn't hit anything. The crew was paying plenty of attention which made the fact that they actually told all of those students to stay in their cabins even worse- they knew how bad it was and still chose not to get them out. It also was almost an hour between the time that it began to list and when the crew finally abandoned ship- still not making any attempt to get all of the people off. The only real similarity is that in both cases, the crew was extremely negligent and basically ignored the passengers.

The person who drowned in front of them is so tragic. A few years ago a woman and her daughter were floating the river I had just gotten off my float and was leaving. I looked over and saw her and her maybe 5 year old daughter struggling. I put my arms out to grab her daughter first and she wouldn’t let go. She then began pulling her daughter down with her and I started slipping. I had to pry the little girl out of her arms while someone helped the mom. I don’t think she meant to push her daughter down but it’s the panic that sets in. I was traumatized by the look in her face and the little girls screams.

Portes). and kaboom. the ship hit the rock islands and then Samina begans to sink slowly slowly (more like rapidly). they didnt care that the ship starts to sink. *They didnt care to help the passengers onboard to said that we are sinkin and please go to the nearest station to pick up life jackets and pull out the rafts* . the crew have the members written on their b@lls and they left them helpless during the sinking . thats why... better help everyone than left them helpless.

I hate when people compare every ship collision/sinking to the Titanic. I get that that's the most well known thing to compare it to, but seriously. Also, IIRC both the Herald of Free Enterprise and the Estonia were designed with bow doors that were left unlocked and were forced open by heavy seas not stern doors which would be almost if not impossible to force open.
@MB-en3ij
@MB-en3ij 2 жыл бұрын
Well, this is very similar to Titanic, undeniable. Also the flaw pointed out with this design wasn't the bow door failing but having a one whole level open and undivided which is very susceptible to flooding and capsizing since the water will always accumulate on one side.

I remember watching the tragedy unfold on TV and I couldn't stop wondering what the hell was the crew thinking! It was indeed a national tragedy for my country. The captain should have been jailed for life. Instead he's already released from prison!! That's just outrageous!!! If anyone ever wants to visit our islands, here's a tip. If you're visiting any of our Cyclades islands (Paros, Naxos, Mykonos, Santorini etc...) choose vessels of either "Blue Star Ferries" or "Hellenic Seaways" companies. If you want to visit Crete, choose either "ANEK Lines" or "Minoan Lines". Here's one more tip coming from my father who has visited many of our islands when younger. Avoid any vessel with the word "express" before its main name. If the word is mentioned after the main name of the vessel, it's safe. It just means that it's a very quick one. I hope neither my country nor any other country in the world will ever face such a tragedy again.

Passengers first is how it's supposed to go. Almost every pilot will wait until the plane/boat is assumed empty, then walk through to ensure it IS empty. Last they get off. Since everyone refers to Titanic when they see a ship sink, remember the Captain refused to get off because there were still people on the ship. The Concordia Captain abandoned the ship while people were still on board, he was arrested.

Familiarity breeds contempt. The crew became complacent due to their familiarity of the ship and the normal operation. My hope is that when engineers design any systems their primary goal is not just to build something cool but to build something that is the coolest, something designed to prevent loss of life, first and foremost. I don't know how they are today but those water tight doors should automatically close after each opening, in a reasonable time. They should only be able to remain open with a manual tag out/lockout process and, at that, no more than two compartments should be exposed until the tag out/lockout issue has been corrected. And there should be some form of pressurized system that would close those those doors should water be sensed while they are open. They don't have to slam shut but they should close. Yes, crew might be trapped in a flooding compartment but like pilots on an airplane, that is a risk and responsibility you sign up for when you join the crew of an ocean going vessel. Like on an aircraft, safety innocent people outside the craft first, passengers second, then the crew. Sadly, that ship sank mostly from human laziness and unprofessional operation.

The greed of holding onto a wet stereo system, the woman holding her bag - it was her entire life. I've unfortunately been in several horrific disasters, including two huge forest fires that raced toward homes so fast we barely had time to run out. One woman kept trying to go back and get her makeup. Neighbors had to physically drag her, screaming, into a car and drive her away from the flames, which were like tornadoes. She would have died for that makeup. Other people had to take care of her CHILDREN, who she never said a word about.
