Don't you just love it when your friends leave you for death and immediately go into self-serving damage control mode.

I worked in Destin, Florida for a couple of years and every spring break some unfortunate drowning involving young adults, boats and alcohol occurred. Water is like playing with fire, it needs to be respected. Please be careful.

Some of these people come from backgrounds where they have never been held accountable and when they get out to the real world reality slaps them in the face.

If alcohol was absent from all this, the probability of a fatal accident taking place would certainly be much lower. This was a senseless and avoidable tragedy that killed a person and deeply impacted everyone’s lives. I wish people in this age group could understand that bad decisions done during this period of our lives have the potential to change our future and completely destroy the dreams we once nurtured. I think for many young adults there is a sense of invincibility and overconfidence that may place them in dangerous and potentially fatal situations. Great review as as usual! I live in Austin, and used to party on Lake Travis all the time. I have awesome memories of those days. But… it is very dangerous. It’s a hot spot for party boats and drinking. Many young people have lost their lives on that lake due to negligence. I can’t understand why these kids lied about what happened. I do believe it was an accident, and lying about it made it a crime. Sad sad story.

Teens + Alcohol + Water are a lethal combination. They should have all been wearing safety vests. They spent only 5 minutes looking for him? You'd think he was worth more of their time than that. What a tragedy! I currently live by the Colorado River and it seems that most of the deadly boating accidents are fueled by alcohol.

NEVER ride on the bow of a boat. It is a recipe for disaster. Similar situation as these kids, but those involved were around 30. Cruising at night, alcohol involved and a guy on the bow. They hit what they believed was a log and the guy fell off and was hit by the prop. Took several days to find the body.

Why wouldn't your first reaction to a friend overboard and not immediately visible not be to call 911 and get search and rescue there asap? Some "friends".

these kind of scenarios are exactly what fuels me to continue to be sober (2 years this September). you can cannot control the actions of people around you, such as a concert, a bar, or in this case a boat. alcohol may not be "terrible" but 100 percent of actions taken are with the absence of alcohol are much more sensible and more calm. this is why I will never drink again. I dont want to be a apart of the problem, and I dont want to be around someone who could bring problems into my life. Alcohol is the most insidious toxin that is worshiped in society.

I remember my immature self drinking at a college party as a freshman and the police show up because of a noise complaint - I was terrified I was going to be arrested, lose my athletic scholarship and ruin my life (perhaps jail time??) because I was only 18 at the time. I think I hid in a closet and was ready to run out of the back door if I had to. The overwhelming irrational fear of being caught with alcohol as a minor is real. I think I would have been honest with the police about everything but perhaps would have minimized my involvement with the alcohol in the statement.

I went to college at SMU in Dallas (TCU's rival school) and went to ACL & Lake Travis every year for fraternity "away weekends". Speaking from experience, when college kids go down to Austin, all bets are off. We would start drinking on the bus ride down and continue drinking all weekend until the bus ride home. Alcohol + drugs + impulsive young college kids trying to impress each other is a dangerous combo. Add a large body of water to the mix & that danger increases tenfold. We always chartered "party barges" operated by commercial drivers who were very cautious about safety. I remember two incidents specially: The first time I went, we were getting onto the boat when the owner told us we couldn't have any glass bottles onboard. Of course, all of our liquor bottles were glass so we had to leave those behind and stick to the beer kegs we had. Looking back, this was actually the best time I ever had, since there was limited beer and no hard alcohol so nobody was blackout drunk. We swam, danced, and had a great time. One year we rented 2 party boats, one for freshman & sophs and one for jr and sr. Once we got far enough out into the lake, about 30 minutes since we set off, they announced that we were stopping so we could swim and go to the other boat, but to not get into the water until they gave the signal that the propellers were fully stopped and the boat was anchored. A couple of guys ignored this and jumped over the boat railings as soon as the boat stopped moving. Immediately, the boat operators announced that the day was over and they were taking us back to the dock. We were all really upset and blamed them for "ruining our day". The guys were really nice but firm about it, saying that they had a zero tolerance policy for ignoring their safety commands and they would not continue our trip. We did not get our money back. Looking back now, I am grateful for this, as we had all been drinking heavily before going to the lake and someone could easily have drowned. For any college kids reading this, I strongly suggest only taking commercially chartered party boats for these kinds of events. They deal with these risky situations all the time, and know the danger signs to look out for. Even then, it is still incredibly risky. Every year, without fail, there was someone who fell and got injured, cut up their feet and legs climbing the rocks, or got alcohol poisoning. Make sure you also have plenty of water available and sunscreen, and know your limits.

I think in high school there should be an entire class or just a regular period devoted to the discussion of bad situations people put themselves in like this. Kids will probably still do them, but at least maybe they'll have more data points to make good decisions.

I appreciate the empathetic analysis here, really appreciated when you said this time is primarily about survival. I think once you’re out of those years it’s easy to forget how little we know what we’re doing but that is how I felt. I’m 22 now and so thankful nobody died as a result of my mistakes as a kid.

In high school, I had something called "The 'Woo' Rule." This meant that I would hang-out until I heard the first drunk friend yell "Woooo!!!" and then I was out of there. 😂

I understand they were just drunk kids having fun, but somebody died, they made no real effort to help the guy, they were a danger to any other boaters who may have been on the water, lied, deleted evidence etc... I feel like the charges are pretty light for all of that. Also, this is taking their word that it was an accident. I seriously doubt it was planned, but alcohol can heat situations up.

Reminds me of that girl who pushed her friend off a bridge and nearly killed her. Her sentence was a joke, tbh.

Too much sympathy for what amounts to be incredibly callous and calculated behaviour. To switch so quickly to self-preservation mode is actually quite disturbing and being a teenager is no excuse. They couldn't give two fucks about their friend. Some may argue that with their whole lives ahead of them, they shouldn't be charged for what amounts to be trivial crimes e.g lying to the police and providing alcohol to minors, but really the charges also are representative of their cold-hearted behaviour. I would imagine if they'd spent more than 30 seconds looking for their friend, most charges would have been dropped. Echoes of Michelle Carter...

How about the effects of poor parenting. So much of this was done via an entitlement attitude, which had to be instilled by the parents. Poor decision after poor decision compounded by lies does not show a good upbringing.

Wow is this case analysis timely! Kiely Rodni has been missing for one week and the teens and young adults at the lake party are being encouraged by adults not to talk to law enforcement. These young adults literally chose to create a perfect storm and when things went badly they created a second one to follow. What changes need to be made? I really appreciate your final take on this one about how the public is expected never to lie, but the police do it as a routine tactic, and how sometimes people will be punished by their own actions to the point that minor infractions are pointless to prosecute. That is so completely true in my experience.

Watching your video I just thought back to my teen years and how I took stupid chances because I didn’t understand the consequences of my choices at that point in life . That being said I’m a little horrified they didn’t stop the boat immediately call 911 immediately and stay in that spot looking for that young man.

Been waiting for such a soothing voice of our good Dr G! Now I am all upbeat.

Every time I hear about these sad tragedies I think about how lucky I was in my teens and 20s that my bad choices did not cause any deaths. It seems like the police are charging them mostly because they were mad about being lied to.

Evidence tampering reduces the investigator's (and society's) ability to know what happened, whether there was a murder or an accident, so I think there should be serious penalties whether there ends up being a murder or not. If you don't like those penalties, don't destroy evidence.

Please remember that it is the DA's office (prosecutors) who decide whether or not to pursue criminal charges in court. The police investigate and provide evidence, but adjudication happens in court.

I can’t believe they lied like that to cover up what sounds like an accident. Had they just been straightforward, I genuinely believe their consequences would’ve been less. Their selfishness is concerning, and the fact that they didn’t stay longer to look for their friend is… it’s just sad.

They were properly charged only I would have thrown in a misdemeanor manslaughter for the playful pusher and possibly the boat operator and owner upon careful review of the facts. DUIs for the boat operators and public intoxication all around. (except for the kid who didn't drink but was convinced to say he was at the wheel, he would of course get that false statement charge)

Every weekend it happens on the roads. On the roads though usually the finger can be pointed at one victim. Here a boat load were complicit.

When things go wrong, just suck it up and come clean. Deciding that ahead will save making so many bad decisions to try to cover things up. Rarely does it work, but even if it does it becomes a priority above saving someone’s life a lot of times, and then you later regret trying to save yourself by sacrificing a friend. Just own up, and decide you will beforehand when it can matter.

I set this video to play 4 times last night but never got past the first 15 seconds because I kept falling asleep! Dr Grande's voice is truly magical and better than sleeping pills!

It would be interesting to have you cover Lake Lanier in Georgia. There are multiple drownings there every year and always stories and comments about the lake being haunted and claiming lives as retribution for the citizens of Otisville-a town now under the surface of Lake Lanier. The stories of haunted ancestors are ridiculous and the drownings often involve excessive drinking and acting foolish. This year there have been five drownings already and the haunted lake stories resurfaced as they do every year. I would love to hear your take on this. Thanks.

Once you have the finality of death staring you in the face, - sudden, pointless, permanent,- the burden falls on those left alive as to how to move forward. What would Jack want? His friends penalized over a mistake that he was a part of? They are guilty of misdemeanor bad judgement, before and after the fact; and I'm fairly sure that's how this will play out.

The tampering with evidence charge is indeed support. It shows consciousness of guilt, whether that guilt was the misdemeanor alcohol charges or covering up what could be a more serious crime. The while group went very quickly into actions to obfuscate the events of that night.

Great job Dr. Grande. The fact that they decided collectively to lie about this horrific incident that led to this young man's death is disgusting. The irony that the Elle was attending a Christian university speaks volumes. The fact that not one of these jerks decided to tell the truth about the loss of a life is heartbreaking. This is our future folks, basic human decency has left the building. My deepest condolences to his family.

Doc police don’t always charge on textbook violations of the law. In many many cases they charge to appease the victims families friends and wider community. As you said, someone lost their life, it was no minor accident from youthful exuberance
