Went to the first of 10 beekeeping 101 class last night with 200 attending and Fat Bee Man was the only KZfaq guy worthy of following. All the rest take with a grain of salt and sort though it all carefully. I have never heard so many grown men rolling on the floor and laughing anytime the term "flow hive" was used. Yeah they sure did look easy though didn’t they?

I have done this for years, but what I do is instead of mashing the strip into place I cut the strip into pieces and glue the pieces immediately with hot wax. I looks good and produces a lot more queen cells.

One note, I used a hot melt glue gun instead of messing with the melted wax and it worked and great.

Watch the FBM's videos on splitting hives. I watched each of them a few times before i tried it and it really works. not hard at all. i've only got one year under my belt as a beekeeper and have used Don's method with great secuess. hats off to Don. this man is a blessing to beekeeping.

I seen this video several years ago. When I was in my early twenties I had a man that I was buying my queens from. And I loved it. 5 dollars apiece. I had to give it up because it complicated my life not understanding bees take your money and time when you start. As does everything. Well I’m back and it’s still challenging but I’m more stubborn now than then. I’ve always remember one man up front above everyone else. The queen man. I didn’t understand what he was teaching me would still be with me today. We now call them mentors and a friend. I’m back in and this year I’m starting getting into raising my own queens. But I’m still not able to be as free as I’d like to be but I’m trying to be. Thanks for doing your video i didn’t realize it was you that made it. No telling how many times I thought of it. Lord bless and keep thanks.

well by pressing the wax on the bar about a inch apart helps hold it to bar and spaces it for good cells to be made.if you attach any other way the bees wont make queen cells or if they do the waxed together and makes it hard to separate them. Don

It is a good idea to reinspect the frame after 4 days in the hive so that any sealed queen cells can be removed as they were raised from too old larvae to make good queens ie. they must have been 4 days old already when the queen cell was started.It is also worthwhile protecting selected unsealed cells with hair curler cages so that the first virgin to hatch does not kill the rest.When the virgins hatch each will need its own mating nucleus.

Make a split, its easier and you wont make mistakes. I suggest a walk away split. Basically you split your hive in two and the bees which are quenless will rise a new queen.

Don, I am going to try your queen rearing ideas. Please do a video to show us what to do with the queens when they are hatched. I have seen your queen castle video but you have not said how many worker bees to put in or how to care for the queens while they are in the queen castle waiting to go into a nuc.
@Bardcar
@Bardcar 3 жыл бұрын
For the beginner this video creates ambiguity in our minds as we would consider the video incomplete and not know that we need to put this new frame that we created into a queenless hive and we would not know why the vertical cones would be considered queen cells by the worker bees in the queenless hive> and we would not know that the worker bees would then fill the newly created vertical cells containing eggs and young larva with royal jelly to make a new queen since the hive would be queenless . But creating ambiguity in our minds is the best way to learn something as the human mind hates ambiguity and will work like hell to find the answers and thus remember what it learned much more deeply and longer. Just keep reading the comments and all your questions will eventually be answered if not you probally need to get a mentor or maybe need to enroll in a beginners beekeeping class.

Hi Don, This is Jason, all the way from the UK. I absolutely love your videos, i think they are informative and a great alternative to some of the methods we are taught here in England. I also don't like top bar hives as a personal preference, however I was a bit disappointed to see this comment, especially when someone has sought your advice. I don't mean this nastily,but when one beekeeper seeks advice from another shouldn't you help regardless, out of respect for the bees?.

I currently have two hives. I want to start a third and fourth. Obviously I will need two more queens. so I take this video and create some verticle cells, place them in the current hives? Do I have to keep the queen away from it? How long do I put it in there? When do I put it in the new hive? How do I get bees to accept the new queen and how do I get some of my current bees to move into the new hive? Thanks Don.
