Based on a true story, Father Stu is an unflinchingly honest, funny and ultimately uplifting drama about a lost soul who finds his purpose in a most unexpected place. When an injury ends his amateur boxing career, Stuart Long (Mark Wahlberg) moves to L.A. dreaming of stardom. While scraping by as a supermarket clerk, he meets Carmen (Teresa Ruiz), a Catholic Sunday school teacher who seems immune to his bad-boy charm. Determined to win her over, the longtime agnostic starts going to church to impress her. But surviving a terrible motorcycle accident leaves him wondering if he can use his second chance to help others find their way, leading to the surprising realization that he is meant to be a Catholic priest. Despite a devastating health crisis and the skepticism of Church officials and his estranged parents (Mel Gibson and Jacki Weaver), Stu pursues his vocation with courage and compassion, inspiring not only those closest to him but countless others along the way.
Written for the screen and directed by Rosalind Ross, and starring Academy Award Nominee® Mark Wahlberg (Best Supporting Actor, The Departed, 2006) as Father Stu, along with Academy Award Winner® Mel Gibson (Best Director, Braveheart, 1995), Academy Award Nominee® Jacki Weaver (Best Supporting Actor, Silver Linings Playbook, 2012) and Teresa Ruiz (Narcos). The film is produced by Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Jordon Foss and executive produced by Miky Lee, Colleen Camp, Rosalind Ross, Patrick Peach and Tony Grazia.

As a pastor's wife, I watched this movie yesterday and cried. Loved it. This Christian life IS not what we see portrayed in every day movies. We don't go around all day smiling, being perfect or smelling like gingerbread. Some of us are rough around the edges, we may not fit in the conventional cliques and may be outcasts like Father Stu - this movie is not for the perfect Christian, but the imperfect, who have a heart and a calling from God. God can use us, regardless of our background or afflictions, he knows the plans he has for us. Yes it has cursing, but so does life, it has imperfect people but so does life. But when I tell you this movie made me wept, it moved me. I loved the ordination scene. I tried telling someone about it today, and I cried. Lord help me to persevere. Help me to be ME and not a copy of what people want me to be, and use ME just the way I am. Thank you Mr. Wahlberg.

I'm surprised he choose the Catholic path and not the Christian evangelical path. Typically Christian movies display stories of evangelicals being saved or receiving a transformative change in their lives. Finally a story that shows an individual changing his life through the Catholic faith.

Good to hear from another Trad! :). .. Movie was VERY good, but I was not all that impressed when I first saw it on the bog screen. It was not until I rented it and played it with subtitles that I could understand much of what was being said. Many times the best stuff was lost because of very fast dialogue. I had to stop and rewind some of the lines more than once even w subtitles to hear/read what was being said so fast. Once I did this I realized just how FANTASTIC this movie is. It is packed with so many truths that we never hear from Hollywood. The profanity was not gratuitous, though. I did not feel offended sin the way I do when I hear profanity used in other movies that glorify its use.

Movies, stories like this matter and often times help reaffirm or help people acknowledge their faith and the love they have for God. Movies, stories like this make you grateful for the faith you do have or even often doubt. It was powerful, and Mark and everyone else involved did a phenomenal job in this.

@@becketttratenberg1358 Of course it's fine. The real story is there is no god, no proof and that Jesus was cruel and god malevolent . There is no soul, sure would be nice if there was one. It doesn't matter as our minds are wired that we will believe anything. Of course there is no god or just a malevolent one at best. God's vengeance is on display in the good books. Ever really read the entire bible? “The gods we’ve made are exactly the gods you’d expect to be made by a species that is about half a chromosome away from the chimpanzee.” - Christopher Hitchens said. Thought one breed of monkeys is more human that man. The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobia, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. In the New Testament he gets worse because billions of good people was simply can't believe will suffer eternal damnation. Oh purgatory is is such a nice tiny branch that reaches out to the most scientific and skeptical Of course you don't believe me, you haven't read the full bible with a skeptic's mind. Also have you read even half of the bible? Imaginary God was a vindictive as hell. And Jesus is more punishing than bastardy god. He believed and liked the idea of eternal punishment or never spoke out against it. Infinite torture for you even if you are moral. His criteria for getting into heaven is contemptible, disgusting - believe in me, that’s all it takes. A close reading of the Old Testament is filled with horrendous lessons on how to treat people. A god that kills almost everyone on Earth in a flood: that’s pretty crazy. A god that commands Joshua to murder all the women and children except for the young girls, who can be taken as sex slaves. The 10 commandments tell you that working on Saturday is a sin and the first four commandments are vanity plate for god. God eventually goes into great detail about how to deal with cattle thieves, isolating women on their period, and which fabrics to wear at the same time; but nowhere in those ten commandments, or in the six hundred and three that come after it, does it say “Don’t abuse children,” or “Don’t enslave people,” or “Don’t rape.” The Bible was written by human beings at a time when stealing a person’s livestock was a crime punishable by death, but raping a young girl was easily remedied by following it up with a marriage proposal. Jesus cleaned it up but still believe in Hell for moral non-believers (atheists are as moral as believers .. look it up in any scientific study. Of course shallow minded people won't). Jesus and religion is a shakedown; I got matches and you're flammable. Are the big church and hospital studies wrong about prayer having no affect? Sometimes a placebo effect but if you know you are being prayed for and you don't think much is wrong with you; you can get sick or sicker. Also atheists behave pretty much like everyone else, but they do serve less time in prison. - A LOT LESS TIME. Of course Atheists are probably only 10% of the population of the US at best, worldwide we are much bigger. I only go by scientific studies. Look up the fraction of a percent of prisoners who go in to prison as Atheists. Sure a lot of people are converted before they get out. Many who do probably live much better lives than...they are ruled by the carrot and the stick and think they can buy (not longer steal) a stairway to heaven. Atheist's tend to be deep thinkers; seculars or agnostic take an easier road out, generally speaking. If you believe in science you'd have to question the bible .. all of it. Some of it maybe historically correct but 93% of elite scientists don't believe in god or less believe most of the bible. A survey of members of the Elite National Academy of Sciences showed 72% identified themselves as atheists, 21% identified as agnostics, and 7% identified themselves as believing in a god. The number is lower for your average scientist. Evolution is the reason we are here. So a guy named Elijah was traveling to Bethel when a bunch of kids popped up and made fun of him for being bald. That had to suck, and you can't blame Elijah for being pissed and cursing them to imaginary God. But God had Elijah's back, by which I mean he sent two bears to maul 42 of these kids to death. For making fun of a bald guy. I have to think Elijah was looking for something along the lines of a spanking, or maybe the poetic justice of having the kids go bald, but nope, God went straight for the bear murder. But on the plus side, that pile of 40+ children's corpses never made fun of anybody again. Thank God in all of his mercy. (4 Kings 2:23-24) This is just one small example of the horrors' of the deeds and dogma of the bibles. Now I believe everyone has a write to pick and choose the good parts and Ignore that Jesus thought only those who believe in imaginary god Jesus, should get to imaginary heaven, and the rest can suffer in hell or go to a lake of fire depending of what was written after his death . . maybe 40 years later. You ever tell a secret or rumor to someone .. how after 40 years can the writers know anything much. Parts of Jesus' childhood were very offensive and they cut that out of the good book. And of course Jesus a dark skin Jew looks nothing like the bogus picture of him in churches. Lies. Large and small for the gullible.

Usually critics these days lean left politically and any movies about faith or God they rate low. Not trying to make things political just look for yourself. The more woke it is they seem to rate it higher for the most part

" the same crap Hollywood puts out every week.". No, but it is " the same crap Faith based industry puts out every week.". Although with much better production quality and acting and no politics-which faith-based films seemed to have spiralled into lately, instead of actually focusing on God's message. If that's what you're into and you enjoy the message and feeling of the film, fine, but it is what it is.

@ruekurei88

@@AZsullen Depends entirely on the movie. Back in the day, faith based films were pretty much heavy box office hits, nowadays, they're mostly relegated to direct to video stuff and 'back of the room faith'(faith is a factor in the character's lives or decisions, but it isn't a focus-a lot of black movies revolve around that for example). "The more woke it is they seem to rate it higher for the most part" Probably wouldn't go there if I were you, this is your typical 'feel good' 'woke' type movie. Just because it's about faith, doesn't change it's message of a man trying to change his life for the better, struggling with the idea of being disabled and death, who is in an inter-racial relationship. Faith and trust in God is it's only real modifier.

Just watched Jesse Watters interviewing Mel Gibson … Jesse said it’s a very powerful movie and it’s all about suffering and people who suffer have a choice. Be angry or they can be grateful. Mel then answers by saying “A real healthy faith comes from complete abandonment of self which is very difficult for most of us and some of us hang on. Mr Ego is always waiting there … I call him Bjorn. He is face-down in a pit in my backyard. And every now and then I have to go out there to shovel a spoon full of dirt just to keep him down there otherwise he will get up and start wreaking havoc again … and then I will be Bjorn again”😝 ha ha had a good chuckle esp. knowing Mel Gibson’s past. Yea unfortunately there's some politics in that. From all the comments I have read from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, I have found that they tend to really like movies with a social justice angle, ones with a more left-wing emphasis. Just like nobody needs a chef to pick apart the meal, you just want to know that it will be tasty. @@mariagratiaplena2000 yeah they definitely aren’t 100% objective though they surprisingly gave Anthony Hopkins best actor over Chadwick Boseman who just passed that year at 42. They were so convinced the voters would award him they even switched best actor to the last presented award and he ends up losing. Voters interviewed said they just thought Hopkins was better and they just assumed everyone else would vote for Boseman. But obviously usually their biases show through with what’s nominated. But if you go looking for the right movies you often find there’s more competition for acting slots in a given year than you might expect.

@@axgreenious9400 As a Catholic, this is incorrect. "The Catholic Church supports Child Molesters" -- some priests and bishops did cover it up but then you make jump of logic to say the entire Church supports child molestation. This is like saying all white people are racist and all black people are violent criminals -- common stereotypes. Why are stereotypes accepted when the subject changes ? This is a failure to think critically. Secondly, there is abuse in many religions, however, the media tends to focus on the Catholic Church because of its bias. Yet on the other side of the coin, the same hypocrites will shout that the media doesn't portray the COVID19 pandemic honestly or the media has an agenda against Trump. I normally can’t stand faith-based films but this was probably one of the 10 most beautiful films I’ve ever seen. Father Stu is the ultimate redemption story, he was a guy who got knocked down by life constantly but kept getting back up until the very end. I’m not religious by any means but I think this story is the perfect example of what a beautiful thing religion can be under the right circumstances. And I love that the film uses coarse language and portrays difficult and uncomfortable situations, one of my biggest problems with faith-based films apart from the fact that they’re inherently agenda-driven is that they’re too clean and wholesome to portray the reality of faith for many people. Because most people who find God later in lives only do so when their lives are in complete shambles. Father Stu was a deadbeat before he found God and became a better man for it and I love that the film bluntly portrays the fact that life is struggle and pain as well as redemption and success, and oftentimes you can’t have one without the other.
