Unfortunately it doesn't usually happen on purpose, some people don't know how easy cats can gain weight if you just leave food out but sadly once they get fat it's hard to excercise them because they wont. Some people are in denial that their pet is fat too.

I watch a lot of animal programs and have seen several episodes where the owner thought they were showing their cat love by feeding it a lot off the table and making special meals just for the cat. One lady just would not accept the Vet telling her she was killing her cat and it would die soon if she did not stop over indulging him. They convinced her to allow them to keep the pet and put it on a diet to lose weight and start an exercise program. They managed to help the cat lose like 25 pounds and released it back to the owner with the promise she would keep it on the diet and exercise program. She went back to her old way of feeding him all the wrong foods and pretty much stopped the exercise program. I'm sure the cat has since passed because she made him obese again and after all the doctor did to help the poor cat. I don't understand a mind that thinks this is okay and it's just showing them love but you see it everyday with humans too. Parents buying a lot of junk food and that starts the kid off in life being ridiculed for being overweight and having serious medical issues the rest of their life..

Because for some people, the fatter the cat, the cuter it looks.

The *original* owners let him get that fat, they're [allegedly] dead now. So now the people at the shelter are trying to properly take care of him and bring his weight down. Sometimes it's not the owners fault it could be that the cat has a disability or that it would always find a way to get food weather it was in bins or in the kitchen

Believe me or not but we didn't over feed him. We have two other cats here, they all eat the same quantity as him and they probably weigh 9lbs. My sister's cat is just simply big. He is 6 years old, doesn't look unhealthy and overweight like the cat in the video, he runs quick and still jumps high. He is unusually strong, he doesn't suffer and he isn't miserable. I don't know how he actually got to be this big just naturally, but he has some serious muscle mass. This might be hard to explain, but he is so strong that even though he weighs 38lbs, he is able to hang on completely to my forearm while he lies on his back and I lift my arm. I've seen some unhealthy obese cats, but my sisters cat is heavy but healthy as odd as it may sound.
