Faulty start switch on the Maytag dishwasher model MBD8959SFH.

A common problem on these Maytag dishwashers. The right side of the control panel slowly sinks in over time with the far right "start" button collapsing inward. It is due to a faulty plastic support (make that cheap). I could not find a replacement. Rumor has it Maytag does not keep stock of parts...not sure if that is true. I made a support out of some wood pieces that fixes the problem permanently. It is fairly straightforward as far as the repair...took me about two hours. It is now April, 2022 and after daily use for one year the fix still works!

Totally worked and saved me the cost of a new dishwasher - thank you! I found that a 2x4 Lego block fit in perfectly to support the back of the button.

This! Your Lego idea saved me $600 today. Initially I thought the Lego would be snug enough long ways, but it fell through on the first button push after putting it back together. Removed the door panel again, flipped the Lego so the 2 side was facing towards electrical panel and it put plenty of pressure on the buttons. Appreciate you sharing this.

at least that one has real buttons - the newer ones have "touch buttons" that aren't really touch buttons, and the whole thing is made of several layers of plastic glued together. There isn't even a real circuit board, just some kind of conductive ink printed on plastic sheets. It seems like moisture gets into the glue and becomes conductive, and then the control freaks out and can't read the buttons properly. The new button panel, even though it costs about $5 to make, they charge $300 for it! F'ing ripoff

Thank You. Today April 11 2024 just followed your video instructions and It was exactly that. Cleaned and put in a wood support and fixed. now I don't have to wash dishes . Once again Thank you✌

Your video was awesome! I fixed my dishwasher using wooden door shims! I had a little trouble taking it apart, but figured it out. And it went back together easier once I was done. You saved me at least $600 since I didn’t have to replace it! Thank you!

I had the same problem and your video was a great help. Thank you - gave me the confidence to tear into mine. You are right about the plastic mounts are breaking. I found the plastic mount that holds the board in is missing like in your video. My quick fix was to use a glue gun to tack in the board at the mount. We will see how long it lasts in this hot/wet environment. Thanks for illustrating your assembly process.

Thanks for this tip, tried it on our Maytag today and it worked great! I used epoxy instead of glue to secure the wood.

I had similar problem the start switch... I had ordered a ($175) replacement panel, took it all apart and when I plugged it in it would not work. I remembered what you did. I found that a plastic locking part had broken off which locks the board in place. So I took a wooden paint stirrer that you pickup at Home Depot for free... cut it down so I could slip it inside the plastic shroud and glued it in place to stabilize the panel. This resolved the switch issue - and sending the ($175) panel back to the distributor.

I have a newer model Maytag with the same problem. Apparently, Maytag is learning disabled. Shame on them and good on you! Thanks, good job!

I watched this your video and read the comments! I wedged some legos in the there like suggested in the comments and boom! This baby was fixed in about 30 minutes and I did not spend a single penny! My wife thinks I am so handy!

Thanks! I rummaged thru the kid's old toy bin and found a lego piece to shore up the switch. Worked like a charm. Maytag, if you're watching this, shame on you for putting such crappy parts in your machines. This is the 2nd time its failed and I wasnt going to pony up another $300 to swap out a control panel thats otherwise functional! A big thanks to Jeffrey for posting the solution!

I just finished using your video to fix mine. Same issue as everybody else. Thanks for sharing, as I figured the next step was a new dishwasher. I agree with others, it was very poor-quality switch factory install, and cheap plastic parts inside.

Thanks for the video. I was able to find a small piece of wood to push down on the circuit board. Not recommended but it worked.

Same here. I cut some shims, placed it on that plastic tray that buttons rest in and PRESTO!!! SUCCESS. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO

Thanks for the great info. I use some pieces from and old rubber hose line about 1/2 OD then cut a small section out to wrap the broken plastics brackets, so essentially made a 'C' shape. Seems to work as they all were pretty snug fit.

Thank you for this video! I was able to fix mine with Gorilla glue and Legos (as suggested below). I also widened the button holes as you suggested. The dishwasher fired right up, buttons all push easily, and I get to keep a bunch of money. Thanks Jeffrey!

Great video as I’m having the same problem. I was thinking JB Weld or just running a screw through the plastic to support the circuit board .

So the wood worked for the short term and I was able to Google the replacement parts. About $116. Thanks so much for taking the time to make your video!!!
