Líbera me, Dómine, de morte ætérna, in die illa treménda. Yes Laurence Equilbey has a very individual conducting style, not to everyone's taste, but she achieves remarkable results in performance through her intensity and commitment to the music. Over the 10 years or so that I have sung under her direction I have been privileged to share in some very great music making all around the world particularly in Brahms, Dvorak, Mendelssohn and French music. She imagines her choir as a vocal orchestra - a gathering of soloists united in music.

No fucking clue what you mean by "not to everyone's taste", that woman is amazing at what she does and for one to not fully appreciate her conduction the way she did, I tell you sir, that person must have no taste at all. She incorporates the music into herself and delivers the exact feeling the pieces were supposed to bring.

@@davidbizicbaritone i like that when you sing first phrase, there is truly desperate tone of a mere humanbeing who is made of blood and flesh, in dark pit of despair, despair so vast, so that he only can look up to god for any hope of salvation. many performances have their own merits but often many are either too smooth or luxurious for my taste, because i prefer to think about the meaning of the lyrics when i listen to this particular piece. save me lord, when the earth crumble over and the sky melt down in fire....what a dramatic and tragic vision to sing. and to think that this is a passage of a requiem, this is a song of/for a person who is facing/passing his own death...the ultimate endway of all human hope... and we all have to go through that path someday... it is very subtle to express this desperation with grace, without being over melodramatic or harsh. the grace coming from faith in god's salvation, i like to think that way. thank you for your great performance and artistry! sublime.

It's great to see a female conductor. I can't think of many, apart from Jane Glover, so this is very refreshing. Also, as has been mentioned, the female timpanist. Again, only Evelyn Glennie comes to mind as a female percussionist. The baritone's voice is great too. Deep and rich - sends shivers up my spine!

This was amazing. The best version on youtube. The only thing that I found was that when I'm learning Latin they always pronounce the letter 'v' as a 'w' but all the singer pronounce it as a 'v'. Does it just not apply with with singing in Latin?
@claireplacial3668
@claireplacial3668 8 жыл бұрын
+Crimson Chaos Latin pronounciation can vary in time and places. At the time of Fauré in France they would pronounce "v" therefore I think the conductor has decided on an historically accurate pronounciation
@jameswells6904
@jameswells6904 8 жыл бұрын
generally in choral music it's different, I was a chorister for 5 years, and I found that in spoken latin the consonants would be different (w instead of v and k sounds in place of a c, so servus would read serwus, and cibum would read kibum, yet sung they'd sound like servus and chibum) although all this may vary from country to country

No, what happens with Mr. Gergiev and other musicians alike, is that he doesn't bother with those little triffles such as "attacks" and "cues". He takes it for granted that musicians don't need aid of that type, nor basic beating, because one should have an inner beating independent from the visual aid of the baton. Gergiev works purely on musical interpretation, correcting and adjusting sound volumes and ways of express music.

You're totally right... I remember one performence with Valeriy Gjergjev when I was a choir singer. Just light stuff. He was terrible... Just some movements from the wrist and no attacks given at all, so the only thing that remained was to ignore him. At the same time most of the people were glorifying him. I don't know, maybe I just had bad luck and that he is usually great conductor...

I guess the discussion about the conductor is just an expression of ill-meant criticism. The way how the artists performed this wonderful composition is great, so she must have been effective in "some" way. I always say to such critics: Go and do the job yourself and prove you are better ! The choir is really fantastic, very artistic.

I normally don’t respond to comments like these, but something needs to be settled. There is a reason why she conducts like that and it’s perfectly normal and fine. The orchestra and choir lags a little behind so they can see and process the expression that the conductor directs. Sometimes it changes in performance due to a number of factors like a section playing too loud, quiet, or just the room in general. It may seem weird but it is entirely professional and actually a common practice. Some people may not like it (I personally don’t) but that’s how the conductor conducts. The orchestra and choir are perfectly on time with the conductor so there is nothing wrong with it.

@pilouetmissiou
@pilouetmissiou 9 жыл бұрын
