This video covers 4 techniques to paint faux brick for theater, giving 2 techniques where you paint the brick colors first, and 2 where you paint the mortar colors first. All of these techniques have their advantages and disadvantages, and which one you choose will depend on your project and the look you are going for.
The techniques in this video are:
1. Brick first - hand painted mortar
2. Brick first - custom roller painted mortar
3. Mortar first - stencil or tape painted bricks
4. Mortar first - sponge or stamp painted brick
For this video I mostly used craft paints, to be honest. But if I had enough I would use Rosco paint, the colors are much nicer.

I think the rolled on mortar looks more real, than the absolute straight line. It’s been a pleasure watching the work of a true artist.

I'm doing this brick look on one of the walls in my living room and I think I have watched every video that's on the internet. This video by far is the best one that I have seen. Absolutely incredible and I appreciate you posting this. Thank you so much. Absolutely beautiful work.❤ I also think it's awesome that you show all the techniques to make new bricks and weathered bricks.

Thank you!! we live FT in a RV and I'm going to do this for our coffee bar area. Light, easily covered without damage to the walls, it wont fllex in hot and cold temps! Excited to try it!! Love that roller method!!

Amazon does have a variety of stencils. I plan on doing my poured concrete cellar walls at my tiny camp. I use it as the main entrance..

Very cool and convincing! Is there a way to add plaster or some other material to give a tactile layer? Could it be done to create a faux brick wall in a home?
@BehindtheScenics
@BehindtheScenics 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is! I'm hoping to eventually make a video on more 3D options for faux brick, and there are a number of ways to do it for a home.

This is exactly the video i was looking for and technique. I dont want to have the added plaster step. I have a concrete wall at my cottage that i want to look like a brick wall.. It is inside , any suggestions on what kind of paint to use?
@BehindtheScenics

If it isn't going to get any wear and tear, you should be fine with any paint that can stick to concrete.

Great video....love the less perfect bricks! To me the perfect ones aren't very realistic...but personal choice I know.

I agree; both looked good, but the "old" bricks were more convincing. Even brand-new bricks tend to have a bit of chipping along the edges from travel-damage.

Hii this video has been very helpful so far, however I am not able to splatter the paint, it does not splatter in dots and I am wondering how I could do that. (im using acrylics on a wall)
@BehindtheScenics
@BehindtheScenics 3 жыл бұрын
Spattering on a wall is a tricky thing to do. If your paint/water mixture is too thin, it will drip/run, and if it is too thick, it can be difficult to apply. I would do some experiments to see if you can get a thicker paint to work. You can try flicking the paint at the wall by flicking the brush across the fingers of your other hand. You hand will get really dirty, but it could work. Otherwise, you could also try applying it with a spray bottle (don't fully pull the trigger, barely tap at it), but you'll still have a hard time with drips. If nothing is working out (you can clean up your messes with a sponge or wet rag!), you could skip it... or use a natural sponge to add some more texture here and there. I hope that helps!

@@BehindtheScenics It's very tricky for me to splatter my paint onto the wall, plus it is white so I dont want to make it too messy haha :) i dont have a spray bottle either.. maybe I could use a dry toothbrush and dab it lightly? anyway, thank you so much!

Hi there! Thanks for sharing. What size is stencil for the bricks/brick size?
@BehindtheScenics
@BehindtheScenics 2 жыл бұрын
Real brick comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes, so if you research standard brick sizes, I'm sure you can find a size that suits you for your specific project. I don't know what size these bricks are in this video, I made it quite some time ago. Hope that helps!

What is that foam roller called? Where did you get it from? I'm trying to find one! Thank you for your video! I plan to paint a wall like brick! ❤👍 Your bricks look amazing!
@BehindtheScenics
@BehindtheScenics 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I was given it by someone, but I did a search for "pattern roller" and "stripe pattern roller", and I think I found the roller I used at Blick, the art store. If you don't like the distances, you can also make one yourself with a regular foam roller that you then cut with an Xacto blade and pull apart. Good luck!

What kind of paint did you use?
@BehindtheScenics
@BehindtheScenics 7 ай бұрын
For the video I used craft paint, but in general I don't recommend that, the pigment quality isn't great. You can use artist paints, house paints, or Scenic paints depending on what your project is.

Any color suggestions for shading and highlights using grey and white for the bricks?
@BehindtheScenics
@BehindtheScenics 3 жыл бұрын
I do have a video about trompe l'oeil that might be helpful, but in short... the general rule is warm highlight, cool shadow, and the shade is a darker (and often cooler or less saturate) version of the surface color. I would do some samples to see what looks good. Does that help?
@hezb7005
@hezb7005 3 жыл бұрын
@@BehindtheScenics It does. I am using a white wall as my base and a lighter grey sponged for my bricks. I was going to use a darker shade of grey for the shadow and a lighter grey for the highlight? I am so hesitant because I already painted one wall grey, black and white to look like granite and it came out great. However, I could not replicate it again on another, so now I am starting over and doing the brick. Ugg...
@BehindtheScenics
@BehindtheScenics 3 жыл бұрын
@@hezb7005 You definitely can start with doing the gray highlights and shadows. I would do a small area and see if you like it. If it's not really working for you, you can adjust, perhaps adding a liiiiiittle color into the grays, as mentioned before. The great thing with paint is you can always paint over it if it doesn't turn out the way you want!

What are the specific colors?
@BehindtheScenics
@BehindtheScenics 2 жыл бұрын
For this, I wanted a "brown", "red" and "orange", and in general you can make those by mixing or using alone: burnt umber, burnt sienna, and yellow ochre (or golden yellow)... alternatively you could use raw sienna, raw umber, golden yellow, and any kind of red. I didn't really get specific in the video because there are so many different types and colors of brick, it really is whatever you want based on what you are looking for. Hope that helps!
