Hi, my Cocoon friend! Happy gardening day! Last year was such a great year with the types of dahlias I grew. Really loved each Dahlia variety so much and the colors. Dahlias are one of my favorite flowers. If you have not tried growing them, they are so much easier than you may think. So many to pick from and you can even create your own variety when you save the seeds. If you would like to learn how to divide the dahlias, watch this video; kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pJmbdrGnqKu1mnU.htmlsi=wu9DFx56HV0WpCGT.

I spend much of my spare time watching dahlia videos on You Tube. This is my second year of attempting to grow enough to at least enjoy a bouquet from my own small garden. I have moving north from south eastern Florida to Alberta, Canada which is zone three. Last year I grew Thomas Edison from a Wal-Mart tuber, also I grew moonflowers from seed. They both were devastated by spider mites. This year I ordered a dozen different tubers from a BC nursery. Tubers sell out very fast up here so I had little to choose from. I am growing them in grow bags this year on my upstairs balcony hoping to avoid pests, especially spider mites. I am sitting up here watching your channel with awe and I admit a great deal of jealousy😩. God has made dahlias flawless but he has given you talent. I have never seen such an aesthetically pleasing garden. Your choice of complimentary plants/flowers, arrangements and ability to photograph them is both eloquent and expressive. I really enjoyed seeing your little garden, I feel better. My little garden is again being attacked by spider mites I was feeling defeated. I had so much hope, I was excited to see blooms instead I saw those little monsters. Your video gave me some inspiration. I will fight back. I hope I’ve caught them early enough. I won’t use pesticides that harm our pollinators so I better get to work. I liked and subscribed. Thank you for sharing. I will continue to watch….Kerry

Hi Kerry! It is so nice to meet you and get to know you through such a lovely comment. I want to thank you so much for such kind words about the garden, she is my brother, my grandmother, and everyone I have loved throughout my life, in one little space. I call it my space with the largest beating heart. But I want to share with you how sorry I am that you are struggling with pests. Dahlias are easy to grow, but at the same time, like many flowers, a lot can go wrong. Know that I struggle in the garden many times, it is part of my journey and learning. I think I learn the most when things go wrong than when they go just perfect. I wish we lived near each other and I would share with you my tubers and try to help you. I understand not using pesticides, but I also try never to use any. Right now I have lost two boxwoods in my garden to a virus and it made me a little sad. But now I know so much more about them. I try to share the good and the bad, maybe I need to do more of the struggles. You have given me so much insight in your comment and I am so grateful. I lived in Florida many years ago and when I moved to Georgia I also grew moonflowers. They were so beautiful! Please keep believing and enjoy each step of your journey, you will have the most beautiful dahlias one day. Keep the dahlia plant clean of leaves on the bottom 6 inches and remove any extra stems. I leave only 3 stems so that plants can have air circulation and the energy can be directed to making flowers and not growing a ton of stems. If you are growing them against a wall, move them away from the wall to allow airflow. It also helps prevent pests and powdery mildew. I hope this helps you in some way. I lost so many dahlias this past winter that were left on the ground. But they were loved and new ones are being tested this year. Have a beautiful gardening weekend! Melba

I live in zone 9b, how often should I water them? Everyone have different opinions. Some tell me to water them twice a day, other onces a week and every other day. What kind of bug repellent you use. For some reason I starting to have so many different types of insects. First time planting dahlias. Thank you

I live in zone 8b and our weather is less harsh than yours. We get a lot of rain and when we get snow or ice, it does not last long. I garden organic, but the only thing I use for dahlias is Sluggo for the slugs and beer traps. The slugs are bad here. I keep my dahlias clean on the bottom 6-12 inches by removing the leaves and that helps with pests and diseases. Regarding watering, I don’t water them too often, maybe a couple of times a week. We have cooler weather in the 70’s and 80’s. August it gets in the 90’s and I may water an extra time. The tubers hold a lot of water, even if the plant wilts a little, it will come back when it cools off at night by using the water held on the tubers. If you water on excess you can kill them because the tubers rot. Think of them as potatoes, they do not like it too wet or too dry. This article may help you with some of how to maintain your dahlias to flourish. cocoonraw.com/help-my-dahlias-are-not-blooming-my-favorites/ I hope the information helps you. Stay creative!

@@cocoonraw I see, we only get rain maybe February to April. Is getting very hot and is hard to know hot much water. My plants were looking sad , on facebook everyone said need water, i water them more and now I have lots of plants dying from rooted tubes. You know how much that hurts 🥲

@@Meny1973That is the most difficult to understand. Dahlias come from cooler weather, from the mountains in Mexico. They have a hard time with weather above 85 degrees. Dahlias will wilt to protect and conserve the water in the tubers. I wait until morning to see if they are still wilted before watering Most times they spring back up. Overwatering will quickly rot the tubers, so maybe try the morning trick and see if it works.
