I have to admit Pete, this is my personal favorite segment that you've ever done! Schenker is my #1 guitar player so I got "amped" (pardon the pun) to comment on this. As you and Jeff Young mentioned, it's SO hard to limit a list of favorite Michael Schenker solos to just 10! In 8th grade back in 1981 I first heard "On and On" and have been a fan ever since. There may be better guitarists out there but no player has the melodic feel of Michael Schenker. I was so glad to hear Jeff mention this during the show...Schenker can play a blistering lead and all you'll hear is melody. It's simply awe-inspiring. Here are some of my faves (in no particular order): * I Don't Wanna Lose (from Perfect Timing 1987) - I got a speeding ticket once because I was jamming to this solo *Reasons Love - (from No Heavy Petting....my favorite UFO album) - probably Michael's most blistering solo ever *I Got the Fire (Schenker Pattison Summit - 2004) - he shreds the solo on this Montrose classic *Let It Roll (Force It 1975) - this was probably the 2nd UFO album I ever purchased and the solo in this track blew my mind the way it was orchestrated; truly a song within a song *Armed & Ready (self-titled MSG debut 1980) - though a bit cliche', it's one of the few Schenker solos I can play note for note so its a fave *Looking for Love (MSG 1981) - the middle solo is great but the outro is quite possibly the greatest outro solo ever in my opinion; as you guys mentioned, you don't want many of Schenker's fade out solos to ever end! *Out in the Streets (Force It 75) - honestly it took years for this song to grow on me; now its one of my favorite UFO tracks - the solo demonstrates a great mix of keyboard rhythm under Schenker's orchestrated soloing; always dig how Schenker changes pace in his solos *Lipstick Traces (Phenomenon 74) - beautiful, heartfelt instrumental; this is my mom's favorite Schenker tune! *Lights Out (live Strangers in the Night version) - simply mind-blowing *I'm a Loser (No Heavy Petting 76) - like Jeff Young said, this is such a great unsung UFO album! Love the slide guitar bit in the intro *Rock You to the Ground (Assault Attack 83) - Martin Birch got the best tone out of Schenker on this entire album. This is a classic extended Schenker outro with a dynamic tone that's strangely not very heavy (RIP Martin Birch)

I hade the honor to witness Michael warm up whin we had Michael at our club a couple of years a go.Just stan in an empty venue with only Michael on stage plying in a pretty low volume was one of the best moment for me as a promotor. Jeff Young was THE guest for this. I like how he could describe things about the solos that someone like me can not. I also like he gave some love to lesser known Michael Schenker material like his 10th choice and the song from "Sharks" as honorable mention. Michael Schenker has done so many albums that I don't think many heard them all. Many seem to ignore everything post mid or late 80's. I personally think the later albums are more hit or miss since then but plenty good material to be found if you have the time. A personal favorite album is "Adventures of the Imagination".

Was looking forward to this episode. Schenker falls at number six on my top ten greatest players. Great picks particularly the “Pack it up and Go” solo very underrated. Jeff touched a little on one the hallmarks of Michael’s style “Vibrato” he has a quick perfectly controlled quarter step vibrato heavily influenced by Leslie West. The difference is Leslie is a little ragged in his application Schenker is almost always perfect. That is Schenker’s style in a nutshell damm near perfect. That’s what puts him near the top of the list.

Broken Promises (Assault Attack, 1982) 4. Never Trust a Stranger (MSG, 1981) 3. Rock Bottom (Phenomenon, 1974) 2. Lost Horizons (MSG, 1980) 1. A truly impossible mission ... I absolutely agree with Pete regarding Force It being the best overall album, top to bottom (let’s not forget that it contains the most of the Strangers In The Night setlist!) I also second Jeff’s opinion that Schenker’s tone was best on No Heavy Petting ! All your choices are superb, of course... I would also like to point out the solo on Reasons Love (from No Heavy Petting) : strictly speaking about guitar solos, that one could easily rank among Michael’s top 5 best ! And what about the guitar solos on the two Peyronel compositions, Highway Lady and Can You Roll Her (also from No Heavy Petting) ! Talk about BLISTERING !! Thanks for a great show, guys ! Kudos to Mr. Young for his fine insight on the guitar playing in general AND his mention to Dead Man Walking (an absolute gem, although very well hidden) !

Hey Pete, I love your channel and everything you do, I have been spending a lot of time lately on KZfaq watching your stuff and I think it rocks. I could not find an email to reach out to, so I'm sending this as a public comment here on KZfaq. Here is an idea for a show - some songs from classic albums that have not been singles, but deserved to be. I just got the idea listening to Maiden "No prayer for the dying". I know it's not your favorite album, but I feel that track should have been a single from that album as opposed to Tailgunner and Bring your daughter, which were. It's such an anthem with beautiful sing a long melody parts and then it explodes into some great soloing form the guys, to just subside again and return to that very memorable lead line. I think this song perhaps would have been a much bigger hit that the ones afore mentioned, had it been release as a single. So there, just an example, but I think this concept could be a great show, given how knowledgeable you and your guests are in the rock discographies. Hope you like it. Cheers from Belgrade, Serbia. Keep on doing great work.

Hmm, thanks for the suggestion, but kind of sounds like what I did for a few months with the Deep Cut Dive shows. Many of the songs I picked were indeed songs that should have been the noteworthy ones.
@BorisJeric
@BorisJeric 3 жыл бұрын
@@seaoftranquilityprog Sure, I guess for me the deep cut is perhaps a little different, since some tracks could be great deep cuts, but they do not have a potential to be a single (ie, To tame a land, or Still life from Piece of Mind, phenomenal deep cuts, but not single material for me). But I do get your point, probably too similar. Anyways, thanks for the reply.

Another great show with Pete and Jeff. Good job guys! Well, with Michael Schenker, he is one guitarist that I actually like in the studio and in concert. You could almost pick ten solos just from Strangers in the Night. I will try to pick some from other albums, too. No particular order: Let It Roll Rock Bottom Love to Love You Cry For the Nations Mother Mary I'm A Loser Let Sleeping Dogs Lie Only You Can Rock Me Shoot Shoot Bijou Pleasurette Armed and Ready And there are plenty more that have great solos. Sometimes I think of his playing as being well-planned because it comes out sounding so right even though he makes it seem so spontaneous.

Schenker is one of those few guys where it is not as simple as he has 10 greatest guitar solos. Almost every song from every Scorpions, UFO, Michael Schenker Group, and McAuley Schenker group album has a great solo on it. As it stands, "Love to Love", "Looking Out from Nowhere", "Let It Roll", "Cry for the Nations", "Lost Horizons", "Lovedrive", "Samurai", "Rock Bottom", and "Attack of the Mad Axeman" are some of my favorite Schenker guitar solos. Schenker may have been the greatest soloist of all time.

Vinyl and CD I’ve always played these 5 songs off SITN to death for the solos (great songs anyway) Love to Love, Mother Mary & This Kids (don’t care that they are not “live” live), Rock Bottom and my favourite of all time Lights Out (cheating with 2 great solos). Try me and Never Trust a Stranger are kinda similar songs with great solos, Pack it Up and Go, Rock You to the Ground and Let Sleeping Dogs Lie. I smiled when Jeff mentioned turning up the volume as that last song fades out, yes I have done that (and a few Gary Moore songs!) - at least they can’t fade out a live version although I’ve just listened to the Live at Budokan Version and I prefer the studio cut even with the dreaded fade out 🇬🇧

Thanks for the show - you dont give yourselves an easy task do you? First time I ever heard UFO was on a BBC radio 1 session - since released on CD - with Too Hot to Handle, Lights out and Try Me. After that I was hooked and the Lights Out album (and everything before and since) duly purchased - though for some reason I've always preferred the session version of Try Me. Some excellent choices by both, and as you say very very difficult to choose a top ten. Just re listening to some of the deeper dive choices and yeah they are great - Whiter Shade of Pale, not an obvious but an inspired choice - I'll need to go back to those lesser listened to UFO albums like Sharks and Covenant and love the jazzy mid section of Lonesome Crow bookended with Iommi-esque solos - I've always thought of that album as being a bit Sabbathy. As no doubt everyone else can I could list loads of other songs - but as nothing was mentioned from Built to Destroy I'd put forward Captain Nemo, Rock My Nights Away, Red Skies and Time Waits (For No One). Also while the Contraband album was ok I thought their version of All the Way from Memphis was pretty good.

Awesome episode. Can you please do future episodes with Jeff on Steve Vai, Chris Poland, Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, Adrian Smith, and Dave Murray?

Very interesting, good show. Bases covered, but I'll add MS's brilliantly melodic, mainstreamed, Teutonic-rock solo on Mcauley Schenker's "Love Is Not A Game."

Great concept. How about a show on Robert Fripp's best solos, diving into King Crimson, Bowie, Eno, Sylvian, etc.

Looking for Love (awesome solo. But obviously just one of many I could mention from Schenker).

I Come in Peace, it's actually a great Shotgun Messiah song, but has to be Rockbottom for me.
