One thing to watch out for is that as the series progressed, each episode's opening shot of the Fawlty Towers hotel sign shows rearranged and misplaced letters.

Fawlty isnt new to the hotel buisness. A comment in a later episode implies they been at it atleast 8 years. And an episode in season 2 has a comment which implies Manuel has been there atleast a year.

The guy in the black jacket had a cockney (east end London) accent, which is considered a lower class area, that's why Basil was rude to him when he came to the counter.

The man who was made to move to accommodate Lord Melbury, and then became irate not getting his drinks order - that was Terry Conoley. When I was a young teenager, he stayed in my family home, as a ‘paying guest’. I’m in my seventies now, so I don’t think it was the same voice you recognised. He was actually an opera singer and until Fawlty Towers appeared on TV, I’d never seen him without his toupee.😊

Fawlty considers himself to be refined and somewhat upper-class. He's always sucking up to "his betters", who revile him, and showing disdain for "his lessers" who are generally sharper than he is. He's an unsuccessful snob who needs to be rescued from himself, but it is very comedic and it's hard not to feel for him. Nothing seems to go his way. Manuel, who speaks almost no English and whom he hired because he'll work for next to nothing, and whom he abuses, adores him. He's scared half to death of his formidable wife, Sybil. Polly, the maid and front desk help, nearly carries the place and spends much of her time bailing him out of trouble. There are a few residents, whom you'll come to know. It's a circus, but a well-written one, and i hope you'll stick with it because you'll end up loving it. So far, excellent !!!

Hiya. Try not to dive into an in-depth analysis of every scene. Just go with the flow. It is a comedy, after all, not a serious drama. Oh and try not to miss the changing lettering on the FAWLTY TOWERS sign at the beginning of each episode. Stay safe. All the best to you.

This has to be viewed through the prism of the British class system . Its not primarily about wealth. It's about social class. A Lord would have status , even if he was not wealthy. A commoner would not, even if he was super rich. This is all about Fawlty grovelling to one of the aristocracy (most of whom trace their ancestry to the Normans who fought at the battle of Hastings in 1066)

This is a perfect example of a farce. Characters popping in and out of doors very quickly, frequent misunderstandings, everyone being rushed off their feet, items being misplaced and so on and so on.

Basil Fawlty is one of the craziest and funniest characters in tv history, I even heard that British people consider this show to be their version of Seinfeld in America in that it's considered the best comedy tv show of all time in their country.

You're in for a treat watching these Randi ... great reaction ... make sure you read the "Fawlty Towers" sign at the begin of an episode ! , the newspaper delivery boy rearranges the lettering to spell something different (but you never see him do it) ... Basil is always just a few hours away from a complete nervous breakdown & the guests in the hotel are just an inconvenience to him running the hotel ... there was an American version of Fawlty Towers called "Payne" but nowhere near as good or funny (sorry)

I've lost count of how many times Americans comment on various scenes as if they are watching a serious drama show....It's a comedy show!!...e.g. You comment that you're not surprised that Sir Richard and his wife wouldn't stay there after seeing the chaos of chasing Lord Melby.....you're simply missing that this is the whole point of British humor.

Fawlty Towers written by John Cleese (Basil Fawlty) and Connie Booth (Polly the maid). They were ex husband and wife and knew each other very well and the character of Basil is based on Cleese at his extreme moments. They were broadcast on BBC2 in 1975 and 1979. Two series of six each meant they had time to craft each episode perfectly.

This series, now, can be seen as a huge demonstration of Cleese psyche at the time...coming out of the famous Monty Python crew...the series is John Cleese running around trying to maintain the John Cleese the world expects and John Cleese, the man. The Blonde, "Polly" is Connie Booth...they wrote the show together, whilst writing the show, they were in the process of divorce...the whole show is a very dark joke, allowing you to see psychological break-down in real time - "faulty towers cannot stand very high"

Basil is a class snob. He thinks he's better than, he's a bully to the staff and the customers. It was based on a real person. Monty Python were in Torquay and came across a hotelier who hated guests and then he and his wife Conny Booth who plays the waitress wrote the best British comedy of all time only 12 episodes that never get old. If it was a play it would be a farce. Lots of running around and misunderstandings

I'd like a free bottle of wine... something like that, don't gotta be rude or be a karen about it, but it's well within your right to say no thank you I'll stay here :) - and OMG yes I was trying to think who that guys voice reminded me of, it is Snape.. doesn't look like Alan Rickman though

Hehehe.... It's lovely to see these again. With these being new to you, all I can say is there's a treat coming to you. Fawlty slapping Manuel happens from time to time. But it's all make believe. Fawlty is a living stress bag, which is what gives the show it's appeal. Quite nostalgic seeing all those four wheeled fossils gracing the roads and car parks. My dear old dad drove some of those. It's causing me the odd giggle watching you react to these. I might have suggested watching Dad's Army. A British comedy set in WWII. But I'm not so sure you be amused by the type of humour. It's every bit as old as Fawlty Towers, and even less abusive to Spanish waiters... Just to let you know Randi, I had 2 notifications from your channel today, each from separate videos, with a "wattsap" phone number, asking me to contact them regarding making earnings. There's no need to tell anyone that these are scammers, I made no contact. But these things could bring unwanted attention to your channel. I clicked on one and i vanished. The other one I didn't click on. But went to the video in question, and It hasn't shown up there. All strange and suspicious stuff. I've looked for them since to copy down the info to give you, but I can't fand either of them now. Anyway, sweet one. keep taking great care. TTFN

Also I think you did I great job with the upload, I could tell small bits were cut out, but the main parts are there and visible, I’ve seen other reactors nearly cover the whole screen which is sad. You’d think after all these years it would be allowed to be shared around and enjoyed, I bet the majority of people watching this have either seen it many times (I have the dvds) or they would never come across it without seeing reaction videos. Also surely they aren’t making much money from it now 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I don’t know how all these copyright things work, it seems fine with some shows but not with others 🤷🏻‍♀️ Anyway I’ll look forward to you watching the rest 😊

I'm afraid this went way over your head as a young American. The episode has been dreadfully chopped about. There was never a 'backstory' to Basil running the hotel, he might have been there a year or 15 years for all we know. The class system circa 1980 in England is integral to Basil. He"s a lower middle class chap with pretensions. The 'rough' apparently working class fellow Basil looks down his nose at is probably from a more elevated social background than Basil. I hope you can get hold of the full version of the series and first watch without attempting to analyze and second-guess. Its among the very best of British comedy and we're very fond of it, it'd be a shame if people didnt get the humour. Its great writing but also very visual. John Cleese went into a decade of therapy after finishing the series. You do have to listen because some of the biggest laughs are at his quiet curses after his wife has left the room.
