Spike has been set up as an excellent pickpocket already, and this episode confirmed that he's excellent at slight-of-hand and old-school magic tricks. The trick with the cigarette is likely meant to evoke close-up magic legend Tom Mullica. It also nicely sets up the "eating" and reproduction of the chip, later. When Jet told Spike not to win too much, it's because he's a cheat and a sharp. Win too big and the casino will catch on no matter how good you are.

FYI, Romani are a distinct ethnic group, you can't just use that term as a general replacement for the term "gypsy." Referring to Irish Travelers as Romani is inappropriate as they belong to an entirely separate ethnic & cultural group. (Also, Faye isn't actually Romani at all, she's just bullshitting the crew so they'll let her go.)
@DJKuroh
@DJKuroh 9 ай бұрын
When most people say "gypsy" they're referring to the Romani and not any general itinerant people.
@BalbazaktheGreat
@BalbazaktheGreat 9 ай бұрын
@@DJKuroh Who is "most people"? I strongly suspect it depends on where and when you grew up. The people and the lifestyle are conceptually intermixed for a lot of English speakers. In any case, even if you are correct, it doesn't change the fact that Irish Travelers are definitely not Romani.
@AuspexAO
@AuspexAO 9 ай бұрын
@@BalbazaktheGreat Most people as in that's the number one definition when you look up the word, brother. The best way to describe the origin of the word "Gypsy" is to liken it to the word "Indian" being used to describe Native Americans. Dumb dumbs thought they had landed in India, so the natives became "Indians". People thought the Romani people were from Egypt so they labeled them "Gypsies". I don't think of either of these words as a "slur" (most of the time these designations are not used to mock or insult, but because the speaker is unaware of the history behind the word) but they are both incorrect names for a people, so insisting on using them is a really obtuse thing to do.
@DJKuroh
@DJKuroh 9 ай бұрын
@BalbazaktheGreat Definitely add "where I grew up" go that. I don't mean to speak for the world or even the USA. I agree about Irish Travellers. I wasn't sure why they were brought up unless I missed something in the reaction since Faye was talking about "romani = gypsy".
@BalbazaktheGreat
@BalbazaktheGreat 9 ай бұрын
@@DJKuroh So, as I was trying to indicate, for many English speakers the word "gypsy" refers to the itinerant lifestyle first and the Romani ethnic group a distant second at best. Many people may not really understand that the Romani ARE a cohesive ethnic group; I know I certainly didn't know growing up. And I had never heard of "Irish Travelers" until I saw the movie Snatch - but my reaction upon learning they existed was "oh, they are a type of gypsy." Have you ever heard the song "Gypsy" by Fleetwood Mac? Or "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" by Cher? These songs are not necessarily about actual Romani people - the term gypsy here has been largely divorced from the Romani ethnic group. In the video above, Morgan incorrectly refers to Irish Travelers as "Romani" because she's trying to avoid using the term "gypsy" in this broader sense of people who live an itinerant lifestyle.

IMO *Morgan's* literal take on what *Faye* said was wacky. *Faye* was simply being hyperbolic. Poetic. Take it as you would just as if she had said it today while handcuffed. Not unlike when *YoSafBridge* from _Firefly_ was in the trash bin and exclaimed, _"You can't do this! I have a condition!"_ as *Inara* hits the remote and closes the lid.

I really do love Cowboy Blip Blorp. It's been such a staple in most of my life. Cowboy Oh Snap is like chicken soup when you're sick. I was introduced to it waay after it's original run when it was repeatedly played on Adult Swim. I just remember being fascinated by the amazing old school animation. The fact that Cowboy Snap Clap was made in that fantastic era of animation where true quality went into every frame is only one of the reason why it still holds up today. Cowboy Meep-Meep has an incredible soundtrack and some really great voice talent from some titans in the industry. 10, 20, 30 years from now I'll probably still find occasion to kick back and watch some Cowboy Hoo-Hah!

@@CarbonMage You are right, but it is not just the chronology. Teddy is not an Abe variant. Stop me if you heard it before : The protagonist, a lone wolf, is push into a conflict against a powerful foe. He trained, tested himself to gain an ultimate Form/Technic/Fordden. But once the villain vanquished, a new more powerful menace arrived, and you repeat to gain even more awesome superduper power. and you do that for multiple decades. ( Hollywood should take note ) If you want a monument just to Shonen : maybe but you missed the ultra classics : Saint Seiya and Captain Tsubasa.

@@princemwamba5230 I would say Dragonball more than DBZ. The Dragonball manga codified a lot of the visual emotional shorthands used widely in anime and manga today and had a much bigger impact on anime. Z was an early exposure for a lot of american anime fans but the original series had much more of an overall impact on the art form.
