While at Piedmont piano co. I had the chance to sit down at each of these including the Fazioli. That was a few years ago. But each left an impression on me, including thee Fazioli which just recently was the only concert grand left in the shop. Right away I notice the Bosendorfer sound is right on top of the harp and in front of you, the others all seemed somewhere in between, slightly above or below thee harp. I did notice on the Fazioli a bit more of a unique dampening from sustained to dampened or Sostenuto that caught my interest, though the sound is a little bit trapped below the harp, and obviously there is a difference between old and new piano hammers not yet well worn. I purchased the CLP-785 which has all three of these piano samplings. after renting the NU1, and the action or touch is quite remarkable, but there is still nothing like feeling actual strings or dampening through the keys.

Even as a virtual instrument (in this case, the VI Labs True Keys Italian, modelled after the F308), Faziolis are just a different thing on their own. I trust my serious playing on this sound. And I get your explanation on the touch being able to paint different colours. Funny thing that such a large piano - the largest, even - can make the smallest sounds. In his interview with James Pavel Shawcross (this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aNdzl92Fm5-8o40.html), Paolo Fazioli said it once that his pianos derive their sound from the Italian language - specifically the tradition of belcanto singing in Italian opera (he says "clear, elegant, long sustain, big dynamic range, remember (sic) the Italian language").

"I almost have tears in my eyes when I touch this piano ...

On a more practical level (not in the $$$$$$$ range), I was at a piano recital recently where a grand (a few inches shorter than a concert model) was the instrument and the award winning pianist's talents were not shining through - almost certain the same instrument (it was the same venue) was played by an equally talented pianist 12 or so months ago, and the piano sounded a lot better - the make of piano I won't reveal - perhaps the piano has not been maintained/regulated properly in recent months - anyway, never take for granted a good sounding piano in a public recital - most of the time, everything comes right and the many dedicated tuners/technicians must take credit for that - I can say the piano concerned was not a Fazioli - not to maintain a Fazioli properly would be borderline criminal !
