They're little now. Compared to the old days atleast. Back in the 20s through 50s they had around 300 or more members in each family, but now it's rare to have a family with more than 200 guys

From watching too many 'classic mobster movies,' most people think it's like a nobles' society. Note: noble in the original meaning the nobles thought they were above the common plebs, above the law (but under God. If god could catch them). But all you get for being a 'made man' is that you're allowed to work on 'family territory' while having to pay the least in 'taxes.' Gangsters who are not made are more like trainees, being given the privilege to learn 'on the job,' but they get paid a pittance. And being actual family (son of), doesn't neccessarily mean you got it better than the average 'made man.' I read that one son of a mobster decided to testify against his father after being unhappy for many years that he was a hitman who did jobs for a few hundred Dollars a week, because 'Hey, you're my son! We're family, it's your duty to help your papa.'

Interesting, when I joined the Mafia we had this strange test where we had to keep a lit lighter aflame for a whole 24 hours. Strangely simple and straightforward. I left shortly after the news that the boss was murdered by some 15 year old kid. strange stuff.
