Football Club Groningen is a Dutch professional association football club based in the city of Groningen, province of Groningen. Founded on 16 June 1971 as the successor of GVAV
in 1974 The club came very close to bankruptcy but was saved by the Groningen municipality government
in the 2014/15 Groningen claimed their first major honour during the season, however, defeating PEC Zwolle 2-0 in the 2015 KNVB Cup final.The side became the third Groningen-based team to win a major honour, after Be Quick won the 1919-20 Dutch League Championship and Velocitas claimed the 1933-34 KNVB Cup
n 2022-23, Groningen finished the season in bottom place, winning only 4 times in 34 matches, and were relegated to the Eerste Divisie for the third time and Groningen won only once in 21 matches, and were eliminated from the KNVB Cup at home by amateur club SV Spakenburg
Groningen finished runners-up the following season and were promoted back to the Eredivisie with a squad composed of many players who were recruited from Groningen's youth academy; the team defeated direct rivals Roda JC 2-0 on the last matchday to take second place from them

Sowieso de 1-1 tegen Telstar, zonder dat doelpunt had Groningen wel 100 goals tegen Roda kunnen maken maar nog steeds niet direct hebben kunnen promoveren. Dus bij deze de hele late 1-1 uit tegen Telstar was de gamechanger, die heeft Groningen naar de Eredivisie geholpen. En de thuiswedstrijd tegen Roda? Hier zag je toch echt dat Fc Groningen een Eredivisie ploeg is en Roda, ondanks dat ze 2e stonden, totaal geen vuist konden maken. Ook tegen Willem II, dat 1e is geëindigd heeft Fc Groningen constant gedomineerd, maar is het 'slechts' 1-1 gebleven, maar gezien het spelbeeld was het niet aan Willem II af te lezen dat ze op de 1e plek stonden. Fc Groningen heeft met name in het begin van de competitie wat moeite gehad om zich te herpakken na degradatie en tegen uitermate zwakke ploegen punten laten liggen, maar normaal gesproken had Fc Groningen gewoon kampioen moeten zijn.
