In this episode I restore the feeling of this old and tired brake pedal by replacing the master cylinder and brake booster. However, finding a brake booster ain't easy! As it gets harder and harder to find parts for these cars I decided to share my struggle in this latest video. @@AlexFranceschi Any reason you didn't go with something like a chase bays brake booster delete? I already did your fuel pump rewire and bought the upgraded hubs you recommended.

Great video. Fwiw, a Subaru Impreza booster and master bolt up the the FC pedal and firewall. The only issue is the Subaru master has 2 ports instead of three so you have to get creative with the plumbing. It is also an even larger bore aluminum master (1-1/16") and a smaller dual diaphragm booster. I did the swap and it feels great. I think I paid $45 for a used assembly and another $100 for an adj. prop valve and fittings. Looking forward to your next video!

I think I remember seeing some old threads on rx7club back in the day on this topic...was that you!? lol If the FC parts continue to disappear, next time around this might be the best option. A lot of people mention the 929 conversion but it's going to be even harder to find 929 parts in the next 5-10 years. And I'm not sure it's really worth it on a stock FC brake system. Ya know? Question - how did you apply vacuum with the brake booster out of the car?

I was hoping you might have went with a upgraded booster. I heard the 929 and Subaru boosters work well.

I was thinking about it, but for the stock FC brake system there isn't much need....well, at least while parts are still around. I hesitate to recommend 929 parts because those are hard to come by as well. (Back in the day it was no problem) The subaru combination might be a good one for the future if parts are still in supply. Otherwise, we might have to start looking at aftermarket kits to keep these old cars on the road.

This is just what I needed! I recently upgraded to TII brakes on my FC and I have been plagued with the exact issues you had before and after the swap. Is there a specific tool you used to induce the vacuum on the booster for measuring? Thanks again and great vid!

I used a vacuum pump from harbor freight for the booster and to bleed the brakes. Goodluck!

Sorry for the late reply, I didn't see I had comments on some of my vids. To be honest, the poor car has been sitting for most of the pandemic. I've been really busy and car activities have been put on hold. Last I remember before hibernating the car for awhile, the brakes were great, minimal effort, but nice linearity and easy to modulate. The FC is a very analog car to begin with and makes for a great driver's training car once you get a few kinks worked out. It doesn't have the frills of modern cars, but still a joy to drive.

Dont think you showed how to adjust/close the gap between the push rods for the booster to the master cylinder? I have the same problem right now where the pedal sinks really low. At the moment I'm trying to see if I can do this by just adjusting the push rod from the back of the booster while its still installed on the car.

The pin on the booster can be adjusted, it should be threaded. If it's an old booster you may need some PB blaster to break it loose.

Just saw your second question, if the gap is not correct, adjusting it at the pedal in the floor board wont help. You have to separate the master from the booster unfortunately.

Unfortunately, your only options in the US are what I mentioned in the video, unless even that is now outdated. You could contact places like rhdjapan to see if they have access to the parts you need. I would also reach out to places like mazdatrix or atkins rotary. They have good info on what you can still find.
