Yes, timing a little early. There should not be any gas squirting onto the slide as squirt begins. A note here on length of squirt: The length of the squirt is controlled by the leak jet. The smaller the leak jet, the longer the squirt and vice versa. You want just enough to stop the lean bog when opening throttle, but not enough to flood the engine, increase emissions and lower fuel economy. A #35 Keihin leak jet is the smallest producing the longest squirt.
