To attract the best, leaders mustn’t be afraid to let firefighters be aggressive problem solvers. During his keynote, The Colony (TX) Fire Chief Scott Thompson extolled the virtues of the cowboy way.

I recently finished his book. PREACH! There have to be standards with accountability. The public has expectations of us.

The public also doesn’t want to pay for it either, so there is that issue. That’s not to detract from being professional, but does mitigate the level of service.

Cowboys haven’t won a thing in 3 decades, so I’m not sure what to make of that.

Speaking in a circle without saying anything, typical Chief statement.

He said plenty. Maybe you're part of the target audience then?

“Cowboy” isn’t what he describes. We label someone cowboy only when someone acts in a manner that is dangerous to their brothers and sisters. They are cowboy when the operate with no regard for realistic risk management. They are cowboy when they put themselves above the team they serve with. When someone acts cowboy, they force the team to deal with their freelancing rather than do the job they have trained for. Cowboy, contrary to his statements, is about the freelancer. It’s about the firefighter who fails to look at the science and implement that science in a rapid aggressive manner, rather continues to double down on ignorant methodologies that have been proven to not be effective or true. You CAN be aggressive. You CAN be effective and safe. You CAN drop injuries and deaths to our people, while serving our community and people.
