That hydrant was in just the right spot at just the right time! I would imagine that fortunate occurrence is a rare one!! I would want a pro HazMat team to decontaminate if that was my Truck!! Great job as always!!

This is being caused by the operations of the fire department notice running water on right hand side of manhole exploding with electrical Arc yet. There is no water on the left hand side.

The last time I was in NYC was when I was stationed on Staten Island at Ft Wadsworth. That was back in the ‘70s. I always had great respect for the FDNY.

Holy Moly, I thought I was going to need to hope a plane back there and show that guy how to get that cap off. Seldom saw that in my area as they have college kids in summer go around and make sure caps are not to tight and flow hydrants to make sure stem screw working correctly. Then touch up paint as need be.

Sorry, a pet peeve of mine - the youngsters who have never had to use an analog clock, seem to have a real problem telling right from left. Spent some time working with youngish engineers recently (20 - 25 yo) and I don't know how many times I had to say "no, your other left". Of course, what do I know, maybe half of NYCs fire hydrants have left-hand threads?

What are transformers doing in a manhole in the first place? Where I live all the electrical cables are underground but not in manholes we have transformers in powerhouses above ground for easier access if something wrong. Everything thats needs to be underground is separate from each other.

I wouldn’t think the NYFD would put water on electricity because water is conductive for electricity meaning if they throw water on it the electrical current Will probably flow down the stream of water and Wind up probably electrocuting the fireman. They always say don’t put out a live electrical fire with water

My god there seems to be a lot of these manhole fires been occuring frequently in New York City. Is this the normal during summer there? I sure would not have wanted that to be my pickup truck that close. How much voltage is going through there? It must be quite a lot that is crazy never seen that in my area. That poor truck is sure going to stink. That man hole sounds like it is about to explode

They are old, inadequate, never overhauled nor replaced equipments ...to reduce costs and increase profit. .You believe it’s an old man with Lincoln’s beard managing the power company Instead it’s an investment fund based in Hong Kong and Cayman Island, no one has ever seen them and and they’ve never seen a transformer in a vault underground. for them the electric company is just a stream of money that appears on the screen. if the flow decreases in the morning they will sell in the afternoon each electrical power asset and buy in the evening cows and condensed milk producers in Turkey or sewing machines factory in Brazil

i remember 1 year here in my city in podunc indiana every other day there was a fire or explosion in the under ground vaults that AEP had in downtown it got so bad that they just closed off all the sidewalks around the vaults while aep replaced all the transformers and wires people were taking bets on which one would blow next

Only police can check with their dispatch to find it’s vehicle’s owner. Not likely they are even home? That is a service box fire. A dime a dozen in NYC. Either the limiters let go our the conductors burn in the clear? There are three phase service crabs in there. If two or three phases ground out or cross phase with each other? That produces shorts & sparks. As well as heat & lots of smoke! When #9 says they killed the power to the service box & you see the sparks & popping? They only cut it on one side. It’s fed in a network. They need to cut it from all dirrections

@Mister Brookes Perhaps its different for underground lines, but overhead, it is indeed as simple as opening an interrupter. Poor design really if its not that simple to isolate a section of line underground as well

In the uk we have man holes with things called link boxes,which allow us to re arrange our network put in back feeds etc.these sometimes burn out in a similar fashion to what was filmed.

Why manholes & transformer vaults if this keeps happening... better to do what England does, install the thransformers on ground surface level with high fences round them, hardly ever any bother with them in England... well don't ever hear about it
