A nice Monday morning shower for the members of E22 as they shut off a hydrant that sheared off under pressure. Bystanders reported that a contractor was illegally tapping into the hydrant with a small garden hose and… well, the result was this. A massive torrent of water was reaching over 40 feet in the air and reaching as high as the 4th floor.

Cut people out of vehicle wrecks, abseil down buildings when people get stuck on gantries, rescue people in floods, chemical spills, etc people stuck in tunnels / access ways or service areas / elevators etc. Fire is a very small part of what Firefighters do - they are professional rescuers.

I joined the FVFD as a 40-year old rookie and one of the first calls was to a house that encountered a burst pipe where the water service entered the basement wall, just before the meter. The basement was filling up quicker than we could pump it out & the water department was an hour out. There was a hand-hole curb box in the middle of the paved driveway that housed the main shut off. The valve-operator was covered in gravel & mud that prevented it being able to turn off with the curb wrench. I asked one of the firemen if they had a shop vac at the nearby station, suggesting we could suck the debris out from around the valve to gain access. They all looked at me like I was out of my mind before finally getting on the radio and requesting the vac. I had the water turned off within minutes. It’s hard getting respect/support from some of these volunteer small town lunk-head heroes as a rookie. I lasted 3 1/2-years there. The stories I could tell ! They’re definitely an asset to the community but, oh-boy. Kudos to the professionals.

Hydrants usually all have a shutoff located several feet away that have a cover. This cover wasn’t easy to open. This is why firefighters have to be good problem solvers and not get frustrated. I’m more surprised by the fact they didn’t control traffic in this street. I’m ten times more afraid of idiot drivers than I am of a broken hydrant.

After working for the water department for 32 years I've been through this several times and with small towns it's normally the water department that has to deal with this and not the fire department. The local volunteer fire departments do not have the training to operate a fire hydrant properly it seems and most of the Damage Done to fire hydrants are by Volunteer Fire Fighters who don't understand how fire hydrants operate. If you notice there is an out of service tag on the 4 and 1/2 and the hydrant was previously nailed and broken and should have been shut off at the main valve in the first place. But yeah professional firefighters usually always get the shit end of the stick but always do a great job no matter what.

Sometimes when they break they break below the check valve. Proper compaction and thick concrete pad doweled into the sidewalk and it won’t break below check valve like that but at the break off point below the hydrant. I noticed that in the city I work for.

In front of the fire hydrant as well as along the street and at each intersection is supposed to be numerous water valve for the water main pipe feeding the fire hydrant. Just turning off one of the water valve will be making easy to solve the FH issue.

Edith in a small town maybe but turning off water like that in large commercial areas creates a lot of issues. As that hydrant is flowing it's not backflowing any contaminated water into the system which makes for brown water and people hate brown water coming out the taps.

Working in the power industry with very high pressure feedwater and steam systems, I found that bizarre as well. We teach apprentices and newbys: righty tighty/lefty loosy. Righty is clockwise to close!

We got both OL & OR hydrants and valves in our system. You have to pay very close attention to each valve and what FD District you are in to know. Goofy as hell but each City had their own way. We can't go and change out 100K valves just have to have a very detailed GIS map

We have valves operating in both directions. They are differentiated by the nut size, 1 1/4" and 2" . Funny to see a compression hydrant do that. There must be more to this story. Bollards were not touched. Maybe a vehicle down the sidewalk or.......??

10:25 that piece is called the SEAT. As the top of the hydrant is turned on or off, that end piece lowers and rises to allow water flow to pass or not. THE MORE YOU KNOW 💯
@gorak9000

The seat is the sealing surface that thing sits on down at the bottom to close off the opening. That's the valve stem. Seat is the stationary bit, the stem is the part the turns.

@@chuckprice4541 10 - 20 years to fix it or they will do what they did here. The street was bad so the tore the street up then they repaired it. Then they dug it back up months after completing it to repair pipes and sewar that's is still on going. No the street is worse then it was before. It was nice to have a nice street to drive on while it lasted.

Bravo! The raising of valve covers to road surface grade, and regular valve well maintenance (removal of debris from top of valve stem) would expedite the process of open or in this case, close the hydrant valve. What if this had occurred during an emergency in the middle of winter? Keep up the great work FDNY
