@@DarkAdonisVyers In Edelgard's case it's definitely knowingly. I mean you can't plot to kill some of their members and expect them to not get pissed. As for TWSITD, they likely figured Edelgard's actual feelings on what they were doing didn't matter. They thought she had no choice but to let them do what they wanted. So it threw them for a loop when they found out too late that she had lines and they had already crossed them.

No one that sees Byleth, literally the progenitor of Sothis, is going to deny the faith, but the church does not follow the faith, even turning on its progenitor. This idea of organized religion v. faith occurs all throughout the game, but it and the oligarchy/classism are somehow overlooked in favor of some weak take on racism instead.

I did read the direct Japan translation and it does mean more in less characters. In Japan it’s “Why must you reconquer what you can’t take back? Why must you kill off my soldiers and your soldiers if you will lose anyway” That would be a lot more in English to get that across. The “Must you contribute to reconquer? Must you continue to kill in retaliation” gets the same message across in similar to less amount of text boxes and such (Voice acting is pretty tight on how long they can go on) That and also I think they tried to be very rhetoric to what Dimitri said so, it is supposed to be a Reverse Uno Card on why is he doing this if he’s gonna lose anyway. Which Edelgard says multiple times she has no idea why generals still choose to fight if it just means they’ll be sending their soldiers to die without a cause.

Ironbay Knight G the difference between Edelgard and Claude is That while Claude got plans and knows something is up with the Church and while he might even have some idea of a plan he could go for. He would never act on it due to him being a coward and because he care about the alliance and that he knows that if he get killed by the Church. There will be a full blown war Between Fólden and Almaya due to him being the king son. And even if the Church found out about Claude knowing to much. They can easily keep him by either giving him thing he want or by force by going to the other members of the Alliance giving them what they want in order to force Claude out of the leader role or the alliance in general. Since the church knows that most of the Alliance key nobles work for their independence from other but also for personal gain which the church can give. Edelgard on other hand. She Has nothing left to loose. She has lost everything in her life from her siblings, to her being able to have a normal functioning marriage or life due to her having scars both physically and mentally. To even being able to grown old and see her children grown up. Or to change the empire for the better. The only thing Edelgard has yet to lose is her and Hubert life. As a result of all this. Edelgard is the only person who can actually force Fólden to change and make it Fólden a functioning society again. She is the only one to willingly play evil dictator if she ends up losing the war in order for Fólden to improve. Edelgard would even risk her new found friendship within her own house for this. That’s the clear difference between Edelgard and Claude. For as much as Claude has his Ideals and he desires. They are nothing if you don’t have the will or courage to act upon them.

The war delayed any meaningful, peaceful change.

When she was kicked out she peacefully went to the Kingdom after Loog fought for independance. When the Alliance split she mitigated the split peacefully. Literally the only questionable thing Rhea did was creating ppl to revive her mother but when it didn't succeed she let them live freely (like Byleth's mother) & don't bring up the western church members excution since they started the rebellion & were after her life & included civillians in their move. You do know that there are hundreds of way to implement change in societies & war is the worst way. Edel took the most destructive way to change & yet didn't even change much, nobles were still in control of their lands (as the case for Ferdenand), common ppl were away from decision making with only the strong could hope to achieve anything, TWSITD still roaming free (except at the end it was implied she got rid of them but we will never know, since it was said she waged ANOTHER war to kill them). Claude's methods were intelligent & sound, he got rid of TWSITD & opened the borders to the world. Dimitri's end took care of the weak & commoners & gave them freedom for desicion making, seperated the church from the country.

Jalor218 to be honest, Dimitri doesn’t seem as obsessed with Edelgard in CF. In fact he’s pretty sane. This conversation would have made more sense in the other routes, but not CF.

He's exactly as obsessed as he is pre-timeskip. He didn't spend five years as a murderhobo, so he's more functional, but nobody's actually helped him get over his issues. He hands over his life and his kingdom to Rhea even knowing that she's a dragon - the only explanation for that is revenge.

The reason she uses the axe, in canon, is because it's a weapon that requires a firm conviction. It can't be fainted and twirled, like a sword or lance, you have to put your best effort into every swing. It's representative of her whole character.

She feels guilt for all the bad things she’s done, but doesn’t stop because she believes it’s what she has to do (she says something along the lines of the “more and more blood gets on my path but I most continue on it”). She also has made long term plans and follows up on them. She has a lot of the traits that sociopaths have, but not all of them that are required, feeling guilt for her actions being the main one. Continuing her actions despite the guilt doesn’t make her a sociopath, just a bad person

MrSuzan I think it’s the latter. Solon failed to kill the professor so his days were numbered as long as Byleth was around. Additionally, whatever you think of Edelgard’s character and motives, it’s clear in every plot line, even when she’s the vilain, that she has a soft spot for Byleth and would much rather be on his/her side.

I'd say she wanted to get rid of Byleth since she knew Byleth is pretty strong & has the sword of creation that she was interested in, also she needs Byleth as a tool to make her plans succeed BUT if Byleth goes with Rhea, Dimitri or Claude, it'll be the end of Edel's plan. So her actually wanting Byleth dead makes sense.

@@shadowsquid1351 In Black Eagles, Edelgard never intended to get rid of Byleth because he/she is the most important person to her. She makes multiple attempts to sway him/her to her own side even as the Flame Emperor. Only after learning that it's 100% sure that Byleth is basically god she gets discouraged because she is certain Byleth would stay loyal to the Church. But she can't bring herself to kill Byleth becasue of her feelings for him/her. Deep down she prays that Byleth will choose to stay with her, to be her guiding light even if it's impossible. That's why she is surprised when her route is eventually chosen.

@@Darkyan97 Not true, from the start of the game she needed Byleth only to further her plans, when Byleth got the sword of creator she was restless & trying to either get Byleth to her cause or to get rid of them because they're strong & might get in her way. You can see that in many of her supports & namely the 1 with Hubert when she says she HAS to get Byleth to her cause not because she likes them but to help further her plans. Like Edel is very pragmatic & doesn't have any feelings of companionship or love for anyone & she says it herself. Hell even after Jeralt gets killed by her friend from TWSITD the next thing she says to Byleth is to suck it up & move forward ONLY whe she (Edel) moves forward. I felt she was literally using me the whole game until I got to her side at the holy tomb. After the timeskip when she was sure Byleth was by her side THEN she felt good about Byleth because she can win now. This is how her character was written: pragmatic, goal oriented & arrogant, it's really cool but then her fans try to make her a waifu even though she's nothing like that at all.

I’d argue that those are two different Edelgard’s. One has Byleth to act as an emotional and mental anchor for her to keep true to her morals and hang onto her humanity. While the other does not have Byleth to act as those things, so she looses her humanity so she can claim victory at any cost. So I don’t think it’s fair to blame a functioning and stable Edelgard for the actions of an Edelgard who is not.

Cho'Gath Dark Star, not by much. The original line was more of a “Why do you engage in a war you can’t win?” rather than the “No you.” line she has here. It’s a still a non-answer, but with a slightly higher rhetoric score.

That being said though, I think if it was properly translated it would have hit home with everyone. Personally when I was playing that chapter I felt the same sense of "this is foolish, Dmitri is just being used" (i played CF first). Despite whether Dmitri is bloodthirsty or not the theme of wasted life felt like it was handled very well in that chapter. Everything from the music, the atmosphere, dedue and the beasts. The direct translation is a simple line yes but lines dont need to elaborate when so many of the other story elements are on point here. Less is sometimes more.

Parker MacNeil, Crimson Flower ended up being first route, too. I thought it was a bad line when I first heard it, but I kinda liked it. It brought down the tension because I ended up laughing a wrote it off as one bad convo in an over all good game. Later I came across the Japanese line and thought that was a bit of a fail, too, but by that point I had abandoned my post as an Ed-girl stand (yeah I was one for a bit), and got to liking the rest of the cast a bit more.
