For me, the last game that designed properly for PC is Crysis 1.

It's because Vista removed hardware accelerated audio and developers left EAX behind. Since then audio in games is absolute garbage. Apex legends for instance, 2.5 years later you still can't HEAR FOOTSTEPS OF ENEMIES. SMH

I wouldn't say it's hate but the criticism is comparable to crysis 1 vs crysis 2. Fear 2 is essentially a "console-ified" version of fear 1 that strips alot of features from fear 1 that made it so iconic. On its own the game is fun but can't compete in scope to the first game

Yeah, for a while Monolith didn't have the FEAR rights, then got them last minute.

Monolith made one expansion pack to the first FEAR and then somebody else made another. It was pretty complicated.

There was and for a while it resulted in a weird situation where Monolith got the rights to the plot elements and the other company got the rights for the name and logo. That's why you're playing as a delta force soldier instead of a F.E.A.R. operative, at the time they didn't have a right to use the name in story.

Monolith, the dev got rights to anything related to the IP but FEAR name which went to Vivendi/Sierra Entertainment. They initially created this game as spiritual successor (hence the "Project Origin" subtitle) but after Vivendi bankruptcy, they sold the FEAR name back to Monolith.

One developed by the original FEAR PC team and one developed by the team that made Condemned which was the build that ended being pushed. It adressed some changes that were specificaly catered to console gamers mainly less agressive AI (the first game was deemed hard for console users), it introduced a lot more story following the succes of cinematic shooters like COD and had a lot of design ideas aimed to be less punishing on console harware (smaller maps lower physics and particles interactions).

@@dirkstrickland4494 The Ai was the same, just not utilised in the enviroments. towards the end of the Hospital Section you have a literal arena battle and the AI works just like the first game with them repositioning and flanking.

I still the first game on my laptop, and I never use the leaning options. Just never really left the need for it.

Completed the game on hard many times, and never used the "lean" feature.

Fear 2 happened around the time games decided that if your target isn't within 3 meters of you a shotgun can't hit them for shit.

@@DokturProfesur Pretty much my experience. FEAR 2 shotgun is actually bananas powerful it's just that it has a super shitty range. If you are looking for a bad shotgun Doom 3 is the game. I actually think FEAR 2 could actually be a great game with some fine rebalance of weapons and abilities (like removing the enemies glow in slowmo) also a few tweaks to the AI. I remember watching a making of of FEAR 2 explaining that contrary to what people thinks FEAR 1 AI is heavy scripted but it was programmed to be super-agressive to compensate players slow mo , meanwhile the AI in FEAR 2 was actually a lot less scripted and could actually decide how to engage the player (which is basically why it feels so slow as it is constantly acting defensively) had the developers decided to make it a little bit more punishing would make the game great.

While FEAR 1 feels it has motto "no weapon is useless", FEAR 2 use Tier system which I think is like this: Tier 1 (weak or niche): Pistol, SMG, pump action shotgun and napalm cannon Tier 2 (general purpose or most powerful): auto shotgun, rifles (AR and sniper), neddle gun/hammerhead, rocket launcher, pulse rifle

I remember that fear 3 was crap and I had a dreadful experience playing it.

FEAR 2 was still a much better game than FEAR 3 the only redeemable thing the third game has was the coop and nothing else. It was an ugly, bad designed, poorly written and had terrible cover mechanics implemented.

@@Lozorone FEAR 1's level layout was a bit more conductive for interesting fire fights with squad AI, but most of it visually was super bland offices, lounges, and warehouses.

@@TedShatner10 Personally, I loved the bland offices. The idea that hellacious firefights and paranormal activity was occurring somewhere your dad could feasibly work made it contrast far more with the setting.

The 1st has better combat, but FEAR 2 isn't a bad game. It's at least an 8/10. Now Fear 3 and Fear Online were both bad.

I had fun with this one from start to finish. It never lets up and keeps things fresh. Pure shooter pleasure. I get bored by the dryness of straight military shooters. These sci fi shooters never got boring.

I loved it too, difficulty was the only problem for me.

It should have been a seen as a way to now play shooters in the consoles going forward. But no, let's copy that shit with slow speeds as well.

"Blood 2 : The Chosen" was system-hog at the time of its release (1998 !) but I and my colleagues enjoyed it very much. It wasn't another lazy sequel like in many cases and graphics / physics were CRAZY as for the end of 90s. ! Very underrated game.

Both Shogo and Blood 2 were made on the same LithTech engine. Shogo was the first one actually, by like month or two and many of it's assets and later developers were transferred to quickly finish the game. Shogo is a flawed, but unique gem - a shooter merged with mecha anime (as understood by western weebs lol). Blood 2 is just bad and RAW. Literally right after them came the release of Half-Life 1 and that game just destroyed every competition.

I think that was the case. But Monolith also wanted to get FEAR IP and trademark back. So they thought "ok a spiritual successor/reboot could work". Then they got the IP and trademark back and were like Vivendi said "scrap the reboot art, but keep everything for the sequel." I may be oversimplifying, but watched the "Rise and Fall of FEAR" by GAMER. He explained it better than me.

It was sort of like that. Monolith still had the rights to Alma, Armachan, the original characters and the whole universe, by Vivendi owned the F.E.A.R. trademark, so Monolith even held a contest on their website for fans to come up with a name for the sequel, and "Project Origin" was the name that fanbase came up with. Eventually Vivendi imploded sometime before the release of Project Origin so Monolith bought the rights back and slapped it on the title.
