Thompson was indeed the founder -- although practically the only practitioner -- of the genre of gonzo journalism. The genre is characterized by surreal or psychedelic exaggeration to capture the mood of the early 70s in America, when the vision of an apocalyptically & revolutionary new era had faded, leaving a cynical aftertaste. However, where this language would produce only gibberish, Thompson's style was far more thoughtful & calculating, which resulted in this masterpiece. Ostensively this is all fiction, yet Thompson did cover a motorcycle event & a law enforcement conference in Los Vegas; what else he did in Vegas has never been investigated. Which is why I have to criticize the Folio Society for a relatively subdued color for the book: as brash as the orange is, it is understated compared to the day-glo red-orange & yellow-green of the original paperback. Yet were the Folio Society to use this color choice, it would be derivative. Perhaps that pink-purple of European emergency vehicles would be better.
