I have a good audio interface, monitors, and software. But sometimes I just want the simplicity of a single power switch. I have a Code 25 and it does just fine for practice. I would never record with it, but that's what it's called a PRACTICE amp.

I agree with you that it is not a good amp, but let's be real here the people who buy these are generally beginners and just need something cheap that makes their guitar sound loud at this point. It does pain me to see you destroy them, I take cheap guitars and amps on donation locally and do setups on the guitars and refurb the amps and donate them to at risk kids. I wish you would find something locally like that and give them the amps. I know it's not an ideal amp, but for someone with no money that just wants to play guitar, it's still something they would die for.

Late to the party here, but in my opinion having to work my tail off to get my first amp and guitar was actually a positive. Because now, 3 years later, I'm way more careful about what I spend my money on. I would hate to be that kid that thinks their Line 6 Spider is the best amp ever because it's what was given to them. I've got a friend that was given the MT-2, and he claims the pedal is so good he can sound just like A7X. Settings? Dimed. And yeah... we all know how that sounds...
@Melvin7727
@Melvin7727 5 жыл бұрын
The Knife's Edge If people care about dialing in their sound, they’ll chase that themselves, voluntarily. Nothing you said negates anything that op wrote about kids/beginners who just want to start playing. You’re applying tone standards to beginners, which is bad for them. Also, if we take op’s comment in context, you’re applying tone standards to at risk kids receiving donations, which is silly.
@theknifesedge57
@theknifesedge57 5 жыл бұрын
@@Melvin7727 if we're talking "at risk" kids, then yes, donate it to a school or whatever. I was more thinking about people like me back then, with my crappy combo. I wasn't "at risk", but I probably would've thought it was the best thing ever because it was given to me. I'd probably say something like "oh it's a Marshall so it sounds good", and then never get rid if it.

Small practice amps are still incredibly convenient and useful, Glen. Not everyone has a PC they can use for practicing on a plug in, not everyone wants to sit in front of their computer while practicing for that matter. Plus, they would need decent monitors or headphones, not to mention good interface. Its a pretty complicated setup, when all they want to do is just plug into an amp and go. That was just an out of touch recommendation.

Here's a fun thing I learned from Ola Englund's video, among other demos: the cab sims do sound awful on the built-in speaker but it is a **normal guitar amp speaker** and hitting the "CAB" button to turn the cab simulation off gets results that are 10,000x better. Ola managed to get the thing sounding pretty good in a matter of a few minutes because he stumbled across this. Why on earth they thought cab simulation should be used by default for every preset is baffling to me but if you own a Code 25 or Code 50 and want to instantly make your sound better (unless you're recording direct via headphone jack) then hit that CAB button; it will improve your sound massively.

@ I honestly can't tell you right now and later i will forget about that post so for now i can say, go explore some effects start off clean to match mids highs and lows to your standards, then add efects obvious for metal play with them, little adjustments of the eq may be needed at all times but finally you'll get there, I'm not some kind of sound expert but based on my experience your guitar and environment that you're curretly playing in make huge diffrence in tone, you can always go to the community presets "on the marshall code website" and start with that, then keep correcting it til you feel satisfied. I hope that helped \m/

I am not a Marshall fanboy. I did not think you gave the amp a review for what it was, a beginners practice amp. You gave it a review for a stuio amp. Look modeling amps are great for two things; first giving a beginner guitarist lots of options so they can decide what the 2nd amp is going to be, and the second for cheap cunts like me who don’t have the budget for 20 amps to do home demos with. As the representative of a recording studio I would have expected you to have demoed the higher Marshall Code amps since that seems something more representative to your audience, studio producers. You dinged the amp for not having features of the higher watted amps, such as an extension speaker, an effects loop, and the USB audio interface (okay the audio interface sucked harry balls). I feel that you bias for the Joyo head and the Harley Benton cab represents someone who has already decided what their sound is going to be, not the beginner who is still cutting their teeth. I believe the 25 watt Marshall code is still a good amp for the beginning guitarist. Going back, all preset on-board settings suck, from the Marshall code, to the Fender mustang to line 6, to the Johnson J-station, so give me a fucking break. That is my two cents, and by the way fuck you Glenn

Watching these sorts of videos make me happy that I bought a used Laney HC25R 110 solid state analog combo with a cab extension feature that automatically bypasses the 10" built-in speaker. Those 25 watts through a decent cab and speakers sound pretty good when combined with the dirty channel and blended with a pedal that's set correctly. That little amp had a lot of room to grow with my skills as I played more.

If you read this: I'm not a pro. I'm playing guitar for two years now, so my thoughts and knowledge may be inaccurate. However, I'd like to share my opinion. I may sound cliché now, but I don't like modeler amps. I just can't believe that they can sound as good, as any of the amps they say they can model. Like cars, it can't be a fast, stabile limo, with off-road abilities. I sport a VOX Pathfinder 10 and it's my first amp (I'm trying to save up for a Peavey 6505 Mini Stack as an upgrade). It sounds awesome on it's own, it has a decent volume, and it looks great. It was totally worth to buy, and I'm not sad that I didn't get a Fender equivalent. The Code sounds fine (generously), but it's still worse than ol' Voxey. It feels muffled, like it's forced through a cloud of sticky cotton candy. Even tho it's supposed to be the starter pack of beginner metal guitarists. The VOX doesn't have hi-gain distortion. And that's fine, VOX's not a metal brand. But it has an overdrive mode that gives a decent distortion. At least it feels decent because I could play Gojira songs on it, for my school and it sounded awesome. Plus, you can always add pedals to it (like I did an EHX MM w/ Top Boost). And we're still cheaper than the code on it's own. On Sweetwater the Code costs 250 USD, and you get a practice amp, lower than average, with bad USB connectors and muffled tones. On the same site, you get Voxey 90 USD and the Metal Muff for 95 USD. So total 185$ (cables and pedal power source not included) you can get better sound, than what you get for 250$.

You're reviewing a 25 watt practice amp and your complaining that it won't stand up to being in the mix. That's laughable. Sounds like your mind was made up before you even did the review. Try reviewing the 100 watt combo 2 x 12, with the speaker out option and effects loop. If you're not happy with the usb, whats wrong with miking up the amp? I recently went to a Marshall demo, where they (Marshall) demo'd the Code, the DSL and the new Origin. There was a vote at the end of the demo and the Code came top. You did raise one fair point, that the stock presets are not great, but then again, everyone's opinion of good or bad is subjective and hence you need to roll up your sleeves and get in there and tweak the settings. For example, a Gibson Burstbucker is going to respond completely differently to one of those buzzsaw heavy metal contraptions. Which brings me to my next point, for that buzzsaw metal shite, any old fucking amp will do, nothing will ever improve that sound. Shit is shit, no matter what plate you serve it on. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a fucking pig at the end of the day. You need to be more subjective and realise that the majority of people just can't afford to spend £1500 for a valve amp, I know I can't and at £350 for the Marshall Code 100, it's a very affordable option and the sound is close, if not perfect, what you're demonstrating here is nothing less than valve head snobbery. From a 'rock/blues' perspective, I find the Code more than capable, try this this demo: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/is-jjMZord20Y2w.html And before you mention buying a used valve amp, you know full well, that nowadays, any older gear is getting classed as 'vintage' gear and people are treating them like fucking antiques and ramping up the prices and thus ripping off the buyers. Buying used is becoming less and less of an option.

I think the point of these amps are versatility for beginners. When you're starting out, you want to experiment, and having a whole bunch of amp models and effects to play with is great, even if you're only getting a mediocre tone. When I started in the 80's I had a knock-off strat and a cheap combo amp. If I wanted to try a bit of reverb or overdrive, that meant dropping $50-$100 each on a couple of pedals that I didn't know if I'd like....and wouldn't get to try anyway because I couldn't afford them. A whole bunch of different amp models and hundreds of effects all in one box? I'd have killed for one of these. These are beginner amps, targeted at people playing their first guitar in their bedrooms. You experiment, find the sound you like, then invest in proper gear later when you've actually learned to play. It's like you said, you'd rather have one good tone than a bunch of mediocre ones... but when I was a beginner beginner, I'd much rather have had a whole bunch of tones to play with, even if they weren't great.

Someone should have told that to Metallica when they switched to EMGs on their live shows. Just awful.

It has one thing going. It has a great sound at very low volume. It eliminates the need for headphones, when you live in a 2 room appartment in an appartmentcomplex.

I still think there is a market for having a small amp with a speaker especially for younger folks who may not have a computer to use vst plugins. It is good to have a small amp that you can play in your bedroom or take to a friends house. I might just be a dinosaur. More kids might have computers these days. Wouldn't suggest this piece of crap though. Awesome video and keep posting these reviews.

As an owner of the code 50, I'll say that the presets were 100% made with a 12 inch speaker in mind, which is why they sounded worse in this video. No excuses however, they honestly shouldn't have made the 25 because it sounded terrible for the most part and the 50 is only $249 US. I was never planning on recording with the USB out at all and now I'm glad I haven't yet, because that was absolutely atrocious. I did, however, really like the sound you got for the mix and would put that on a record, but maybe that's just because it doesn't sound the same as every other guitar tone on every single damned record it feels like. But yeah, the 25 sucked, if you are the market for this kind of amp, buy the damn 50

I have the code 100 combo, it's awesome. It also has a speaker out option, so can use a 4 x 12 if required and has an effects loop.

I got the 50 and am pretty frickin happy with it! 🤘🏻 bad ass little amp. These guys r morons trying to make a buck off hacking off on you tube instead of an actual job where you get your hands dirty

OK, two years after the Fearless review, I will add a comment. I have Marshall Code50 for few weeks now. I find it like a fun amp, but some of the things that are said here are true. You must spend some time with it to get useable tone (or sound if you like). I noticed that it is verry sensitive on a guitar pickups, it can produce some noise. I dont have any latency problem with USB connection with my PC. I'm not sure can I post links here, but you can hear my recording with the Code50 here: m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/psuflKZjysDScnk.html I know, the video quality is bad, I should play better, it is out of sync..., but that is another topic. When guitar tone is dropping volume you can hear some hiss (there are ways to remove that, but I left it). I think that the guitar sound OK. It is not Code25, but maybe You could find this comment useful. If you want to plug in and play, look for another amp or "dig" for the preset you like. But, if you want to have lots of sounds IN AMP to work with, use modeling amp like Marshall Code, or Boss Katana, or Fender Mustang, Line6... i think that they all do simmilar job and the price is basicly the same. Or use the Applications for PC, i like those to. Have fun!

Hey Glen, I am currently using a Fender Mustang GT 200 2.0 model that my parents got my for Christmas last year. While it's still a digital amp and not the best, I do enjoy using it. Being 19 and working in a pizza kitchen doesn't exactly make me a lot of money. But for someone my age who can't afford a tube amp and all the pedals I want, it's a fun little amp to play with.

Out of curiosity, what would the Code Amps sound like with a bit of surgery? If we put a Celestion Vintage 30 in a Code 50 (just to make the watts more align) and tweaked the EQ and Presets etc... IE, can a FrankenCode be made into a really good amp?

Hey Glenn, what are your thoughts on the Marshall MG 10 as an entry level amp? Does it suck or is it a decent value for the money?
