Also, while we didn't mention Ukraine or Climate Change, those things for sure concern us. We wanted to focus on more personal items in this video. As a Dane I just found myself really moved by this video. I am so proud you have made this your home, you are so incredibly welcome here. I'm a Brit living in Denmark and before moving here was given the option of moving to the US. We turned down that offer and part of it was due to the fear of school shootings. I just couldn't in good conscience move to a place where I'd be putting my child at that kind of risk and the thought of putting him through active shooter training... not a chance. We feel so much safer here.

About a month ago I was feeling really sick - I called 1813 - They asked me if I needed an ambulance. This just reminded me how lucky we are in Denmark. We can get a free ride to a hospital if we need it! And get free treatment at the hospital!

I am an elderly, soon to be 75, man on only a public pension, and still I'm able to have a luxury car and live in a flat with a small private garden outside, with my same age wife. We may meet some young hooligans at our local station (Not doing anything at all!), but mostly it isn't a problem at all. 🙂

6:00 - This was really something I did not know about the US, as soon as I turned 10, I was NEVER home/inside, I was always outside playing, and by outside i mean within 2 kilometers of where I lived at the time. Once I hit 14-15, we where allowed to bike to the beach alone, and some days we would go multiple times. I can't remember a point where i wasn't allowed to go and play outside.

I'm concerned about Denmark becoming more like the US.

I remember a Danish married couple left a baby carriage outside a restaurant in the US, and got arrested!!!

As a Dane I only concern about my kids getting into accidents, everything else are taken care of, either from myself or the government

So, your major concerns in the U.S. were about being victims of violence or being ruined by a visit to the hospital, and your major concerns in Denmark is being sent back to the U.S. Man, thats kinda grim when you think about it. Also, look into how retirement works in Denmark, and how it works. I can almost guarantee that you'll be pleasantly surprised. Especially Folkepension.

Fears. That's actually a really interesting question. I guess I am mostly worried about external factors and our geography. We are so used to living in a quiet, safe place but actually we also control some of the most strategically important waterways in the world right now. And secondly, and perhaps ironically, I am afraid that we forget to appreciate our welfare system and decide to replace it with something like the American model. Those were my two cents.

Once we had a strike at the beer breweries and we had to drink foreign beer. Very very bad and fearful times ;)

I have so much respect for you, it takes a lot of courage to move to another country.🙏 You are SO welcome here in Denmark, and I hope you can stay here as long as you want 😊 My fears as a father that are divorced, is not being able to see my children. In Denmark when couples with kids are divorced, the custody of the children is automatically shared, but if the mother is raising the conflict level between her and her x husband, she can easily get full custody in court. And after that the father have to fight to be together with their children 🥺 It’s just so sad because children need both their mother and their father.

Idea for a video: What does it require getting citizenship in DK? For you guys and in general. I don't think many Danes know, for a good reason. I assume Maya's Danish is better than the two of you, couldn't she start the process now ? Keep up the good work.

Wow.. I had a house key from age 7. We all walked or biked home from school, to be on our own for hours, or else we just went home with a friend and stayed there until we realised it was getting dark outside, and I probably should be heading home. Then my biggest concern was if I had head Lights on my bike. 😁 Childhood and youth is just so carefree in Denmark. Most european countries I guess.

When I was a kid about 60 years ago, I was afraid of loosing my parents. Then my dad told me it might happen or it might not, but I shouldn't fear, as going around and worrying about stuff would prevent me from living my life. He said that the only thing to fear was fear. I have tried to live by that even since, so I have no real fears today whem I'm almost 70..

I was trying to come up with something i fear and now i spend 20min and the only thing i could think of was if i get the last christmas present bought before christmas.

I am not danish, I am norwegian...and your videos remind me how similar the scandinavian countries are, in culture and government. But I think the greatest benefit I get from your videos are appreciating more the things I am taking for granted, living in Scandinavia all my life. We can be pretty quick to critisize people in other countries, because we don't understand the political climate they are living in. Not thinking especially about the US here, but there are a lot of things in the US that we don't understand that americans are willing to put up with. Maybe we are just used to viewing our whole countries as one big "household", so the taxes we pay are just our contribution to make everybody we are "living with" get what they need? Bernie Sanders often speak the our words when we see what is happening "over there".

Thanks for sharing this! As a Dane I currently worry about my pension, but I know it will improve over time. The rest is kinda okay. I wish that I will be able to save up more to support myself in old age so that I don't have to only rely on what the government can afford for me.

You guys need to visit the rest of “The Kingdom of Denmark”, rigsfælleskabet which means Greenland and the Faroe Islands. You have subscribers both places and will be welcomed with open arms.

A bit eye opening to hear that the things that worry you guys is how things where/are in the US, and then being forced to return from Denmark... puts things in perspective. A thing that worry me as a dane is the growing unalignment in the danish workforce combined with low birthrates and that the amount of elderly is growing way bigger than adult and young generation, these things combined: We have a diminishing workforce in fields like healthcare, prisonguards and the like (service fields in general), but at the same time we are seing that not enough is applying for these fields to fill up the need. One of the most obvious cues on this is the growing wait lists for surgery and treatment and the rise in cases with mistreatment of elderly alongside with nurses and caretakers not having enough time for their jobs at the individual and therefore stressing out on the job... most people got parents that we love and i would hate to experince that my near ones isnt getting the best possible care when time comes.

A lot of us don't have any big concerns (apart from the energy prices presently). I guess, that's why we sometimes are called one of the happiest countries in the world. It's not happiness per se, but rather the absence of fear.

As a Dane I don't feel like I've had those everyday fears like you guys have. Growing up in the 90's not living far from school and my after school activities, I had a lot of freedom. I remember that my dad bought me my first cellphone (in 2002) when I was 10, so my parents could check up on me while I was by myself, but it was never really used for emergencies since there was nothing really to worry about. However, as an adult I've got anxiety and it makes me overthink everything. Luckily our society is rather peaceful, so there's not much to worry about besides my own insecurities. The only thing in the last many years have been the rise of terrorism, where before I saw Denmark as this small country that no one knows about, to now where I fear that when we gather in big groups we will be a target. I remember specifically that there was this incident, I think it was in Germany, where someone drove a truck down a street full of people. I live in Aalborg and the year after when we had Aalborg Karnival and I just couldn't get myself to go. I was so sure someone was going to do the same thing. Instead I stayed at home and kept up with the news, greatful to see pictures of big trucks parked at each end of the road to make sure no one was going to run anyone over. And that kind of security in our society is what makes me generally feel safe in Denmark.

Great video and how relatable a fear, to be separated from those we love, I'm sure that you will find a way to get permanent residency, I know there is many confusing rules, but if anyone is a gift to our society, it is kind and down to earth people such as your family. I don't have fears in Denmark, like i imagine people have elsewhere, I have trust in our society. If something keeps me up at night it's mostly the war, economic crises across the world, people starving and ofcause the climate crises,Wich take more lives every year, but these problems are not easy to solve, so I try not to dwell to much. 😊

Your are amazing folks! As a dane, I feel feel we owe so much to the US (and the UK) for our freedom. I wouldn't sleep peacefully without the US. Well maybe the europeans are better at making ordinary life work (work/life balance, healthcare etc) - which is very important - but when it comes to basic survival security, where would Europe be with out the US (and Canada and the UK)? The europeans have to step up! We should cooperate so much more - internal and with the rest of the world - to the benefit of the rest of the world; to make it a more safe and prosperous place for all of us no matter race, religion or sex. What is most worrisome today? First of all Ukraine deserves all our support in their fight for freedom! Secondly we have make science free and independent from all sorts of political and economical interests. The hallmark of free science - and thereby freedom of expression in general - is to be able to go where man's curiosity leads it, whether it makes commercial, religious or political sense, because no ones knows what is there before you actually have explored it. You should be able to put forward your hypothesis, your presumptions, and support it with data which everybody can check, and then you should be ready for an free and frank debate about your findings. If you do so, your will realize, that here isn't much reason for being "alarmist" today about much ... just look at the present severily lack of a climate debate .. sigh!

Dane here. I’m mainly worried about Putin escalating by using nukes on Ukraine, that chance is small but it’s there. If he do do I worried about the wests response. It need to be strong but still we need to stay clear of a nuclear escalation. Besides that I’m kind of worried about growing old alone, got divorced 2 years ago and have got no kids. Then there are worries about my parents and sisters family getting sick or injured. But not really something I think about unless I have to answer a video like this.

I worry about my economy as a Dane. 10 years ago, I got a chronic condition, that makes it impossible for me, to work. So I'm on kontanthjælp - a government payment to live on. Over those ten years, that income has only risen by 200 DKK, or around 35 dollars per month, which has made it harder and harder for the money to pay the bills. In the last six months, it has come to a point, where it's near impossible to live. As I in advance was living very sparsely, it's more or less impossible, to cut down on expenses. But other than that, I don't have anything that worries me, in my daily life. I was never the person who worries over things.

Here's hoping you all get to stay! :-) My own concerns are more on a daily basis. At the moment, the challenge is to earn enough money to buy wood pellets and wood for heating. As an artist, all my income depends on assigments, and assignments are scarce when people prioritise energy and food instead of art. ;-) I don't worry about my retirement, because there will be none - I won't have money enough to retire. Other than that, a friend of mine is seriously ill, and of course, my fear is that I lose her. In the grand scheme of things, I fear that that guy Putin selfdestructs and takes Europe with him. Do I think about these things all the time? Of course not. Only when asked. ;-)

I really appreciate the video, on multiple levels. It's really heartwarming to hear and makes me appreciate living in Denmark even more so. As for my fears, they are of economy, I always worry about making ends meet, about making things good enough for my kids, and I worry about the political movement of the country, fearing that it will go even more crazy anti-immigration (which could affect wonderful people such as you) - the danish immigration system is simply put a blemish on our country.

Love your videos. As a Dane I´m ashamed that it is a concern whether you can stay or not. I think it's an example of Danish immigration politics failing.

Hi Maya ( you are such a beautiful young woman now ),Miranda and Josh. Thank you for another great video. How long will you have to stay in Denmark to get permanent residency? My concern in Denmark as a Dane is our health service our daycares and our retirement homes. Everything seams to fall apart. I started in the early 90’s working as a pædagog and we had maybe 3-4 children per grownup. Today it’s not uncommon to have 17-25 children at the age of 2,5- 6 years old by yourself half of the day. And again we have not enough doctors and nurses so going to the hospital is certainly not something I would recommend anymore. It saddens me that one’s everything was working perfectly and now it’s seriously crap ( sorry for the language)

The mass (school) shootings baffle me, and I'm so sorry that young teenagers and kids worry that much about dying on a daily basis just because they have to go to school 😔 I worry about not being able to finish my Masters degree, and I worry about getting a job when I leave University (whether I flunk or drop out or actually finish with a degree). For some reason I have chosen culture and entertainment as my way of life, and that is a tough market 😅

Hope you get citizenship! I only worry about a loved one (or a friend) being injured/killed in traffic or seriously ill (my mom died from cancer). Not because of the cost obviously but their pain or death.

I get so sad that it's hard for people to settle here. It's ruthless this system - sending people back to violence or war or hostility and discrimination because some of the people here get uncomfortable with "strangers immigrating". I'm afraid that the system will get even harsher with time and people will become more uncaring towards those in need of our,support. I'm afraid people will judge harshly and look down on difference, as a polar opposite and perhaps a direct response to the openness of newer generations. For myself, I'm afraid of having my pension revoked or reevaluated - the jobcentre in my commune almost got the better of me, and I'm not sure I could go multiple rounds. I'm also afraid of my mental illnesses and handicap growing worse or leading me towards dysfunction again. I'm afraid that my family will leave me behind or forget me. I'm afraid of other people and the noise and closeness of them when I'm out grocery shopping. I'm afraid of forgetting myself or losing my sense of morality and/or sanity.

My main concern would be healthcare and safety overall

Is was born in the late 80's and it was normal for me to go 'Hey mom, me and friends are gonna be sleeping the woods over the weekend' and the only thing she'd do was make us some sandwiches to take along. Friday through til sunday. Granted, there are no real big predetors in DK. If we were lucky, we'd see a fox. The only thing I worry about is that I have to work untill i am 72 to retire.

The only fear - or more so concern - is that the danish politicians in power right now favors the public jobs, and I think in many ways they make it difficult for the people who works in the private sector. I love my job and pour my heart and soul into it, but I feel like it’s so much more fragile than the “public version” of my job. I know, in my job field, a lot of us fear to get shut down because of minor things. I feel powerless and fragile when it comes to that.

Once you're able to obtain permanent residence it's a great relief, with a few easy to follow rules you're pretty much safe. Don't do anything more criminal than getting a speeding ticket and don't leave the country for more than 6 months in a row, without getting permission to do so (for instance, I know that if you're sent abroad, by your employer, your residence permit isn't in danger if the authorities know about it). Those temporary visas or residence permits are daunting to deal with, so many rules to be aware of.

Glad to hear you made Denmark your home...i hope you get to stay as long as you like. My biggest fear would problably be dismanteling the welfare system due to Economic "power" getting to much control. People complain a lot about Taxes in Denmark..but as you so nicely demonstrated in a Video, tax is not all that bad considering what you might risk paying for in a Country like the U.S... to me its simply suprising that people cant fathom that, and i do fear people will change the system. its not a HUGE fear keeping me up at night,, but if i had to mention something, that would be it.

I think, that what concerns most Danes, at this moment, are inflation, rising interest rates and lowering retirement savings. And of course the whole Ukraine situation.

The best advice I can give you to help ward yourselves against having to leave, is to involve yourselves with the Danish foreningsliv. Having been an active part of a forening is one of the things they tend to view favourably, when they decide on longer visas. There are countless foreninger, and if you have a look around, you're bound to find one (or more) you'd enjoy joining. Denmark and the benefits you and we all enjoy were built through foreninger, and should worst come to worst, and you end up having to leave, at least you will leave with the tools to build similar systems wherever you end up. Our most common foreninger are "fagforeninger" and "idrætsforeninger", but you will find foreninger about any topic imaginable

As a Dane mostly the climate, Ukraine situation, the general economy and things which influences our lifestyle.

As a Dane I worry that the politicians ruin our reputation out around the world. I mean if people behave and work and are contributing to the society: WHY then send them out of the country? There is about 38.000 job openings and no or few applicants. "Folkepension" you get 100% if you have lived in Denmark 40 years between age 15 - 65.

I was concerned about Tornados in the US. Green clouds at night lighting up constantly, making it as bright as day and the tornado warning sounding most of the night. Pretty scary for me. In Denmark I fear not being able to wipe my own butt.

I can understand your worries about retirement. However, instead of spending time worrying about it, make an appointment with a bank and they can advise you on the matter. As you are working in Denmark you will earn up to your retirement through your paycheck but if that is enough you should have an expert look at. Also, you could opt for becoming Danish citizens as well as we now accept foreigners to keep their own citizenship, as well as Dane getting another.

for many years my fear was running out of money before the end of the month and not being able to afford food... this happened quite a few times also because I was on welfare... luckily I'm now an early pensioner so it's not really a problem anymore... I don't think there is anything that i really fear anymore but that's probably because I learned to process my fear after a number of years in therapy...

Maya can start her own business,this is very easy to do in DK . She could start consulting other U.S. citizens that want to immigratie tot EU. For example Anything will do,small is also fine . Once she is established as a business owner.there is no danger of loosing visa.

As a Dane married tona Filippina I worry about getting her here. I did it the other way around than most who hook up with an Au-Pair. She was in the Phils when we met. I know we will succeed eventually. But it is really a PITA with all those ridiculous rules to get to be with the one you love. But I am picking her up at the airport again on Wednesday😁

I'm a Dane, who always wanted to be American until I got injured and had to go home (lived in China for many years). After that, I have been insanely thankful to the Danish system ☺️☺️ Talk to lots of Americans who also complain about the health care system over there.. Not a single day passes here in the US in which I don't think about the potential that I may die from a mass shooting. Obviously the saddest state of our affairs is how stressed out children are. It's not fair. Schools are supposed to be a safe place, we have failed so badly. But, the reality is that anywhere with population density is a target these days. Anyway, stay in Denmark!

As a Dane, Im concerned about my kids (but not worried at all), Im thinking that I spend too much time working rather than being with my kids but I try to keep it at max 41 hours pr week (travel included), I worry that I have started too late saving for retirement - I started at age 32 and pay ~20-22% of my income towards retirement, and I worry about job-related stuff. I am not at all concerned about personal safety or economical, in any way, shape or form - regardless of whether our house burned down, a member of my family had some accident or we lost our job. The first items I cant do anything about and if they happened, we would manage. The last one is so implausible (cause I work in IT and I can get a new job in a few days if I wanted) that it is not even worth considering. All in all, having to watch my back on the street or having to worry about sending my kids to school, or having to worry about being sick or having an accident sounds outright dystopian to me.

Maya really shouldnt worry.. she has been to danish school, she does know danish well enough to pass the language test, and well enough to get a job.. and she is old enough to marry if anything should happen with the Visa. But honestly, its very rare that Americans, Brits ect. Get kicked out of the country.. really anyone from the Western world.. and with the will to contribute theres always a solution.. also.. there isnt all that many years til you could apply for citezenship.

One of my fears is the lack of control with products and consumables like the firefighting foam with Pfos/Pfas harming thousands of people before, and after our stup*d politicians, and environment agencies act accordingly. The system doesn't care about the health and wellbeing of the people.

I’m sorry you didn’t get to experience the “old Vesterbro”, (Istedgade, Halmtorvet etc.)just 20-30 years ago, before the city sanitation. Drug addicts, drug dealers and street prostitution everywhere. That could sometimes be a cause for concern.

Stay in Denmark...here is safe...my worries is for the poor people in Ukraine...and the world situation..lets hope the situation will not escalate further..but we must support Ukraine and our democratic freedom at any pricee. I think that USA is doing a fantastic to all of us here in Europe ..and the strong commiment to Nato and Ukraine...without that Europe would be in a much weaker situation.The Biden administration is doing an excellent job ! Moving to Denmark soon and one of my biggest fears is how to pay taxes in both the US and Denmark. It blows my mind that I will have to pay taxes in both countries.

As a Dane for myself i am concerned about the healthcare system we have, but especially the psychiatry that i am a patient of and experience from the inside, we do not use enough money on it and we have increasing mental health problems in your younger population that is not gonna get the help they need. I myself has been given the wrong diagnosis, and regardless of all the nurses telling me that i do not fit into my current diagnosis it is HARD to make any doctor understand and respect my view because they then have to agree that the first doctor was wrong in their choice of diagnosing, and doctors are plagued with this attitude of not only being more knowledgeable then the average person but also protecting each other. I fear that just like me, other young people will get the easy diagnosis and a handful of medicine and never be spoken to again, IF they even get so far.. (I was diagnosed with a major depression as a teenager, i got some anxiety disorder sprinkled on top a little later, in my early 20'ies shit went down and after a month of questioning i was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, i got treatments and medicine, that did not have any effect at all, though out all these years i have been saying that i have autism, but i was told females could have that and it would be very visible as autism=extreme handicap.. My sister and her son was diagnosed with autism this year. And we have like 5 diagnosed family members..) NOW as a Dane my concern for "foreigners" living here is that the government has been very aggressive with deporting everything and anything, its not only illegal immigrants they are deporting anyone where the papers isn't a 100% correct no matter who they are, and i find it scary and disgusting.. We are not putting people to work, we are deporting the work force we have AND the people who could BECOME a reliable work force! We tell immigrants that they should integrate in our society but we do not give them the chance or opportunities to do it.. the xenophobic tendencies are really getting out of hand and i fear for our expats, immigrants, visitors, danish people with roots from another country.. Sorry for making it dark and real, but unfortunately this is where we are at and i don't like it.

I try not to worry about stuff I can´t really do anything about, as a general rule of life :) Sometimes I get caught up in some of the most frustratingly idiotic things like the Corona-panic or how easy people are to manipulate by governments and greedy corporations. And I get so mad and sad at the same time, I just want to leave the planet haha (Or at least flee to a secluded beach bungalow somewhere in the far east). But I´ve learned to let it go and focus on what makes me happy, do things I like to do and surround myself with people I like. Nowhere is perfect, just try to find happiness in life and spread it 😊

Luckily the political will to do something about the most wacky immigration laws also seems to be growing. I guess my fears are currently mostly centered around the war in Ukraine, a murky economic outlook and whether we will be able to maintain the (for the most part) well working public services and relatively coherent and orderly society I have been growing up with and we sometimes take for granted. E.g. our health care system is under increasing pressure from understaffing and the rise in inequality and relative poverty is also present here to some extent (although it's comparably not as bad as in a lot of other countries). Inflation is currently hitting the poorest in every society pretty hard and that applies here too. That makes me worry what the consequences will be when a lot of people can't maintain a certain minimum standard of living, especially if relative poverty becomes more widespread due to a recession.

The reason for your problem with visa is that a lot of foreigners has abused the system. In "the good old days" did you just arrive, say you wanted to live here, and you were almost a legal citizen on the spot. Now can it almost be impossible as you know. May I please ask what city you live in or nearby? As a Dane do I not think I have any fears, except maybe how much money I will get when I get too old to work, it has slowly gotten less and less all the time.
