This is a fascinating and delightful rundown! I have just unboxed the Norwegians with my kids this evening, and I'm getting ready to set up my first solo with it, but I wanted to get some clarity on the main differences, and boy you have really clarified those. Thank you! I've soloed AFFO 3 times and played only a single 2-player game with another homeschooling mom, who has played a ton of Uwe games herself and beat me soundly :). Having read and watched enough pro-Norwegian players discuss their thoughts, I knew I had to check this "fix"/expansion out, but I had missed yours in my research phase. I'm pretty new to the hobby; I began with Wingspan in October of 2020, and I've somehow made it to Odin in a few short and very exciting months. As such, I'm totally fascinated by your pro-short game enthusiasm, because part of the beauty for me as a newbie is not feeling so much pressure to not starve my Vikings, and I absolutely love the Round 7 abundance that makes the homeboard fill up like my Vikings have made it to an estate sale at the last hour and are glorying in the largesse of good timing. I absolutely adore that exponential gain, and the way they eat negative points. That said, I think I have to try the short game at least once to try to understand your enthusiasm. You've been one of the fun and helpful people who have made being a new participant in board gaming a real delight, even in the midst of a pandemic.

Yet another superb review / tutorial, many thanks for your time. Having just acquired the Norwegians we are very keen to play, your run though is a massive help in getting familiar with the expansion of a truly great game. Many thanks.

One of the best expansions. I have heard one of the next expansions in production will give some attention to the short game.

Which expansion is this? I have similar feelings to Rahdo about short game tension and preference.

Gotta say, Richard, of all of your strange opinions, preferring the short game of A Feast for Odin is definitely one of the weirdest. Ewwww.
This sounds like an awesome makeover to one of my favourite games :)

Ah! I was wondering/hoping you would look at this expansion, since it seemed like it would address a fair number of your complaints about the base game.
@ThePaladin015 жыл бұрын
I think those “U”-shaped tiles make the bonuses too easy to get, in the base game you usually have to use up 3 or 4 tiles to get a single bonus, but now you only need 2.

you do make a totally valid argument, it's hard to turn them down...

Sorry I like the long game all game long. And hoping that it's true that another expansion will have 8! Wow! Love your channel though and awesome review! Thanks

Gernot actually never said that he didn't care about the 6-round version. He actually mentioned here, boardgamegeek.com/thread/2069151/second-expansion-danes/page/3, that he's currently working on additions that will make the 6-round version more interesting and more enticing to players who would otherwise play the 7-round version. That to me, sounds like he *does* care about the short game, and that he wants to functionally expand it so more people would play it. In fact, in his post, he gives more arguments as to WHY people would want to play the short version. Otherwise, I agree with everything else that you said - this expansion really elevated the game for me, and is also a must-have for me. I can't imagine ever playing the base game board ever again.
@rahdo5 жыл бұрын
here's the post of his I was thinking of: www.boardgamegeek.com/article/30811731#30811731 so he said he prefers the long game, and the same is true for most of the testers. and the thing that really got to me in that post was that he added most of the testers wouldn't play the short game, hence my concern. He says specifically "In the expansion The Norwegians _all development_ was focused on the long version, even it still works short. " IMO that doesn't inspire confidence that the short game (which i prefer) got as much love and attention as the long game! :) i am really glad to hear about danes though!

Hi, do you have any source on the 2 occupation cards rule?

I’m surprised the long game takes you 3 hours. At two players we usually get it done in about 80 minutes. Maybe closer to 100 minutes if you count set up and break down.

Just checked our statistics. I play this with the wife and our average are 1h30m and we only play the long game. You guys must have more AP than we do... We tried the shortgame once, not for us. But we are all different that way. Need to get this expansion as soon as it is available to bye here in Denmark/EU

Can I implement the coins for useless occupation cards to the base game? If so how many of each do you have? (I know there are two 4 point ones)
@rahdo4 жыл бұрын
yup, you just need something to represent the coins. you can read the rules here: images.zmangames.com/filer_public/b4/26/b4269cc5-1d85-4dc7-8a87-eca0a29029f5/zm7692_rulebook.pdf which i think will say how many coins there are (and specifics about how to use them) :)

That's the SIDE of the original box, not the top. You're looking at its length x height. It confused me at first too!

hmm, my old top10 uwe list is here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gstgiLxlttLJho0.html with norwegians, i'd probably put odin at #4 or 5 or 6 (tough choice)

Is choosing between two starting occupations something they've said we should do in the base game as well or is it just implemented in the expansion? Also, why do you keep calling him "the designer"? It's Uwe, we know Uwe, we love Uwe, we worship at his altar. Unless you mean THE designer, as in the ultimate, the one that was promised, the once and future designer.
@rahdo5 жыл бұрын
Uwe wasn't the designer on this expansion. Gernot Köpke was... Uwe provided feedback and overall guidance, so he got a co-designer credit, but this is Gernot's baby! :) as for the draw 2 pick 1 in setup, i believe this is the way that Gernot plays the base game, and when he designed the expansion he wanted to make that official, and it was approved by Uwe, but somewhere along the way, there was a miscommunication with the rules writer and it got overlooked. so it's kinda sort semi-official for the base game as well :)
@nchlsrdmr5 жыл бұрын
@@rahdo ha, I always played like this too! Actually I felt the occupations were a little weak anyway and barely added much to the game, let alone influence your strategy in any way.
@megashub2 жыл бұрын
@@rahdo I just found this video and am trying to track down where Gernot talks about this. I'll adopt the semi-official rule because I think it's a better mechanic, but I'd like to point to source material in the event anyone asks. Any idea where this was discussed?
@rahdo2 жыл бұрын
@@megashub i can't find the original post where he said it was an oversight in the rules for norwegians, but here's a different thread where he confirmed that it's been tested every step of the way and will become "official" with the upcoming danes expansion: boardgamegeek.com/thread/1843079/article/38628011#38628011 :)
