What up fam!?! Today we learn how to make a Feather Quill Pen. For this build, I used a turkey feather from the moody birds that wander my yard. I hope you enjoy this classical Skill!

Fun! When I was about 10 years old, anytime I found a feather I would cut the end off and match it up with the diameter of ballpoint pen cartridges. Sometimes I had to adjust the length. Everyone at school was jealous. I tried to make some real quill pens but they didn't write very well. Probably because I didn't know about the whole process and just whittled the tip. Plus it wasn't practical for school.

It writes even better if the papers at 45° angle and the pen is parallel to the floor you'll notice there were Puddles of ink where it was a little thicker and heavier that's why writing desks were the way they were

Where does one obtain turkey feathers, if there aren't any random ones lying around randomly in one's yard?

I think you missed a few details. 1. You don't use the bit of the feather where there is white stuff inside, only use the calamus at the front. 2. You should remove that yellow debrus stuck inside the feather before doing anything else.

The end needs clipped from the feather BEFORE you soak it in water, and you really need to get hot sand inside the shaft, as well as outside. It makes no sense to soften it in water, then harden it in sand without doing something between these steps. After soaking and before heating in sand, you're supposed to chape the quill. And leaving the feather in the sand more than a few minutes is a very bad idea. Seriously, where on earth did you find this method of making a quill. You have all the steps out of order. I mean, do the even make sense at all to you? First you clip the end off the shaft. Then clean the inside and outside layers from the shaft. Then you soak it in water overnight. Then you clean the inside and outside again. Then you cut the nib to the desired shape. Then you heat it in sand, but not too how, or for too long. This is how they did it before the metal nib came along. It's detailed in many books. Unfortunately, too many think KZfaq videos are a good place to do research. Uh, no.

Now here I was taught that you take all the feather off the quill, or leave just a bit at the top for counterbalance. And so you can see it and not stick it in your eye. Then you soak the end in sulfuric acid to harden it, which turns it yellow. Then you rinse it, then you shape it. Or sell it and the end user shapes it.
