Epic. The sound of wooden racket to ball to grass, cooing Wimbledon pigeons, Dan Maskell’s silky voice, a mesmerised, complimentary crowd who knew they were witnessing a match for history, and not least two tennis titans battling it out in an age where finesse, magic, net playing and nimble talent were king. Just the best 👌🏻

This is why Borg won Five consecutive Wimbledons. He made it his business to find what it takes to win on grass. You will never again see a clay court specialist that is this keen to come to the net as Borg. Couple that with his lightening reflexes that at times saw him hitting winners from net cords while standing right up at the net, and you have a player that will be very difficult to remove from the top ten list of all time greats.

This was a unique, incredible, legendary and unrepeatable page of this sport. I was lucky enough to have experienced it live: a fascinating show, full of emotions and simply unparalleled. Over the years there have been several champions, perhaps even stronger than these two myths, but no one has ever managed to produce the same emotions, the same incomparable atmosphere that Borg, the Swedish bear, and Mc Enroe, the Super Brat, managed to produce with this match. I was lucky, because I can say that on that distant 5th July 1980: "I was there!"

The incredible thing about this entire match is despite the hype, the importance of the match and the tension, both players play to the absolute outer realms of their talents. Many finals can be disappointing but these two just could not and would not give up. How Borg got over losing 7 match points and being 0-30 down on his serve in game 1 of the 5th, then not to lose a point on his serve, is still beyond me.

To see how polite of a person Bjorg was just look at 7.43 or somewhere close to there where the two are up at the net and instead of smashing the ball hard against Mac or hitting a really hard volley cross court he took a cheaky lob overhead to toy with him. That to me shows that Bjorg was a nice guy and sportsman. If two players hate each other they might try to hit each other in that close at the net.

Borg could’ve been a top 5 player up to 1984 if he hadn’t returned. Vilas was world number 4 in 1982. Vilas only beat Borg once in 15 matches. I think McEnroe had his number but Borg could still beat Connors and Lendl. I honestly think he could’ve won a few more slams. I was a big fan and of Borg millions like me were devastated when he quit at 25.

When Borg won his first French Open in 1974, Fred Perry was asked after thematch if Borg could ever win at Wimbledon to which he replied, 'Certainly'. He knew that Borg had been brought up playing on the fast Swedish indoor courts and had learned the proper footwork to anticipate and move properly around a court, so that combined with his natural speed he would be able to get away with not serving and volleying much. A very shrewd judge and prediction.

Yeah Borg was so talented that could play effectively both from the baseline and at the net. Also, in this match I noticed that Borg's backhand was far more solid than McEnroe's one. McEnroe's backhand was relatively weak in this match, he didn't impress too much srength and accuracy to his backhand shots.

ive never been impressed with mcenroe's apparent 'genius' at the net. ive seen pretty mediocre netplay from him only. it seems some rosy tinted nostalgia blinded lenses that are being pointed at mcenroe. sampras was the superior volleyer, in fact far better than federer is.sampras' volleys and approach shots were just more aggressive than federer's. the way he got the ball to spin so viciously and get so low with his approach shot to the net, and then the volleys were also so viciously executed. although there was alot of naivety in the netrush era. way more than half of approaches to the net went the way of the opponent hitting a successful passing shot instead. and the netrusher relied on merely probability to win a match-that is the probability of winning enough percentage of the net approaches. this percentage play meant matches were much tighter, barely any breaks in serve. alot of tiebreaks, lots of 7-6, 7-6 scorelines. it was the tennis equivalent of general haig's WWI going over the top tactics.

@@shaunhumphreys6714 - Very interesting comment, thanks! I agree with most of what you are saying. For me, it was McEnroe's passion that I liked most of all. As a child, I still rooted for Borg though, back in the days, but I really enjoyed the emotional approach of the game by McEnroe. I also liked his characteristic serve, and his rants were of course fascinating to watch. I can't remember watching a single boring match with McEnroe.

I know this is the highlights of the match and I haven’t watched since I was a kid but I’m not sure McEnroe had even one verbal outburst or tantrum in this match, it’s like he was aware of the historical significance of this match and didn’t want to disrespect Wimbledon or his stoic opponent on the grandest of stages.

In today's tennis I would put crocodiles at the head of the field to force players to go down the net ... My young son disobeys the coaches by doing almost always serves and volleyball. He doesn't always win ... but ALWAYS the audience applauds him.

As riveting as I found this match and the other great professional tennis matches of the ‘80s at the time, they seem almost quaint in comparison to the most recent generation of great tennis rivalries. Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Alcaraz and the others strike me as having upped the quality and tempo of the game by several notches. I truly wonder whether a Borg or a McEnroe would have reached the same heights in today’s tennis world. I’m sure many will disagree, but it’s just how it seems to me after having followed the evolution of professional tennis for more than 50 years.

Great clips. Most others mostly show McEnroe going on the offensive, winning the tiebreak, then kind of out of nothing loses the 5th... Borg was way more versatile than that. Winning Paris on clay 6 times and Wimbledon on grass 5, back to back. Come on! He must have had some skills... Thinking of Nadal maybe at his peak but both Federer and Djokovic struggled at this.

When on grass I had to play differently. Later, with the advent of the modern game made exclusively of baseline missiles, they had to change the type of grass to allow even players who didn't know what a volley was to win. If Wimbledon had remained the same as it once was, people like Federer would have won more Wimbledons than Nadal at Roland Garros.

FOOTBALL is you are right and I watched thousands of matches and attended over 1,600 since December 1962 around the time Georgie was signing for ManU but there will rarely be a better sporting occasion than this. Last night I watched the " BorgMcEnroe" film and it showed how they both got to this stage in their lives and the intensity by Borg was Superhuman. He ALWAYS did every single thing exactly the same each year. Same 50 tuned rackets.Same hotel.Same room. Same food.No detail was missed.Incredible film...
