From February 1, 1981 - Syracuse visited DePaul at the Rosemont Horizon. Dick Enberg, Al McGuire, and Billy Packer were on the call for NBC. Halftime feature was on top high school coach Ernie Kivisto.

Mark Aguirre deserves to be in the Hall. HS all-American and player of the year, unanimous all-American twice in the NCAA, multiple player of the year awards, and that great NBA career, 2 titles, had basically 7 years in the mid to high 20's per game, could shoot from anywhere, handle the ball, board, hall of fame deserving, unlike MIng Yao, Ralph Sampson, and Tracey McGrady, amongst others.

Easy to forget that DePaul had some really fine teams in the late 70s thru the mid 80s.

True, hard to believe they could be so good 1977-1985 then fall so far off the map ever since. Teddy Grubbs had talent but turned out to have a severe mental problem (bipolar I think), and Bernard Randolph had more talent than anyone but also had severe mental illness too, something to do with an infantile personality I think, something like that. And Skip Dillard went off the rails for a decade because he felt entitled, but he found his way back, good for him!

Mark Aguirre going up against Dan Schayes. Two future NBA standouts. That band music theme to NBC's coverage was priceless. I was 6 yrs old when this was live. The good ole days when college teams actually ran plays and the games aired were so special the starting lineups of every regular season games were aired. I never heard such a detailed description from the P.A. announcer of the teams. Like going back in a time machine.

DePaul was a big time program 40 yrs ago. DePaul being featured on the game of the week was huge!!! DePaul used to get local Chicago kids to stay home . Aguire, Cummings, and Skip Dillard, Teddy Grubbs Yes, they were ranked #3. DePaul used to have all their games on WGN, and it was one of the channels offered on cable. Players could be seen on TV parents could watch their son's play. Now it is just a given plus all the star players' parents seem to be at their games. Thanks for posting!

I was just getting interested in the college game during this early 80's era so deep inside, it will always feel like DePaul should be a big-time program even though there's thirty years of evidence to the contrary. I lived in Chicago in the late 90's and there was hope that coach Kennedy and a young crop of Chicagoland stars would get it going again. I attended an NIT game at Rosemont vs Cal and there was hope that the '99 season was a stepping-stone but it wasn't meant to be once guys started leaving early and the promise wasn't sustained for long.

No forgetting here. They were legit. Incredible how they just disappeared off the map considering all the talent in Chicago.

@@joetolstoy3573 Thanks so much for posting this. My brother went to DePaul and was 10 years older. I got to witness this amazing era as a young kid and it is such a cherished memory for me. My dad was a very conservative guy but he would brave even the worst of the winter road conditions to get us down to Alumni Hall in the early days. We would go to a restaurant called the Single File which is now gone, but the owners treated us like family. We'd also go to the Blue Demon room after games... it was incredible. thank you so much

This was during Syracuse's early 80s off years between the Louie/Bouie show and Pearl Washington (hence being unranked after rising as high as #2 in 1980)

The VERY best college basketball ever (late 70s to early 80s). DePaul was among the 3, 4 best teams in the nation then, incredibly talented. They only lacked good defense. Otherwise, they win a title.

Bad defense=/= a top-4 team. They were almost never tested, which is why they faltered in the NCAAs.

You're actually the second person to ask about that game in about a week. Surprised it's not already on KZfaq. I have about a half hour, edited version of the game that I will try to find and post in the very near future.

DePaul has the best starting five in county in 81 adding Bernard Randolph they were nice if they were allowed to run it's unfortunate they played Stjoes and they had them play half court all night didn't help DePaul I believe got into foul trouble that game against stjoes this team was only missing frontcourt depth
