Not only is this siren the most elusive siren I've ever found, but also the least expected one, which, like many great finds, was discovered by accident. Warrick County, Indiana, has been pretty much "Sentry Land" predating nearby Evansville's system. The area is home to several 10Vs of varying ages and it's pretty much the only model they get. Need a siren for a rapidly-growing suburb? Put a 10V there. Need a siren to warn a few houses in the middle of nowhere? Put a 10V there. Don't get me wrong, it's a great siren, but Sentry offers so many other models, why not use something else?
This Model 2 is located at the corner of St. Catherine Court and Treelane Drive. As you can tell, it's buried pretty well inside the trees making it very hard to find during the warmer months. I found it by accident one night during a tornado outbreak a few years ago. I could hear the 10Vs, but also their 16 port Sterling and another siren in the distance. It sounded pretty sick that night but it was so faint I didn't notice it in person. It was when I re-watched the recording that I heard this siren. I spent a good year trying to find it, thinking it was hidden somewhere near the locks and dam. After all that seems like a logical place to have a small siren. But after setting up for another ambience I noticed it was coming from a different direction. So I drove around several neighborhoods trying to find it. I actually passed by this siren several times and I only found it when I saw this random utility pole and looked up and found this siren sitting atop it.
Warrick County actually has two other Model 2s, but both are not in active service. One is in Tennyson, and is mounted below their 10V. The other is located at the Yankeetown Elementary School. When I looked closely, I couldn't find a radio, just a telephone relay system. It's also in very horrible shape and it's probably beyond repair. If I had to guess, their original system was controlled entirely by telephone and once they upgraded to radios, that siren went offline. There may have been others, and maybe perhaps a larger system of Model 2s. Of course, this is all speculative and I'll probably have to do more research. But I wouldn't be surprised if there's other Model 2s hiding around.
