In a brand new interview, legendary Olympic wrestler Alexander Karelin made the statement that he believes that athletes such as Fedor Emelianenko and Khabib Nurmagomedov are more-so representatives of Sambo then MMA.
Karelin, arguably the greatest athlete of all time, received major attention about his part comments about MMA not being a real sport, but more-so a mixture of several disciplines for competitive purposes.
Karelin credits Fedor and Khabib's success to their upbringing in the Russian Sambo school.

So few martial arts actually blend striking and grappling. So many great grapplers are fish out of water with striking. Same thing vice-versa with great strikers and grappling. Sambo teaches it's students from day one that you have to know both.

Do not compare him to Tyson. Karelin may be the greatest athlete of all time. 900-1. Tyson is not comparable, let alone close.

This was one reason why Fedor didn't sign with the UFC. They wouldn't allow him to fight in another promotion and take part in Sambo and Combat Sambo competition. Fedor not competing in Sambo was a hurdle that couldn't be jumped. I think that's a great move especially after retirement.

As someone who has been wrestling since 1984, I refuse to utter anything but glowing words for Karelin. Gives me goosebumps just seeing him in an interview as it conjures up flashes of matches and his greatness. I mean, a 887-2 record! He's like a superhero. 100-2 record would be like "Whoa!" 200-2? 300-2? Would be mind-blowing. I don't even know what you call 887-2. It's like a cosmic joke. However, I will say that what he is saying isn't 100% true; Fedor and Khabib both practiced Sambo, but they also trained Freestyle, Greco, Judo, and BJJ so it's impossible to say which style a specific technique they used in MMA came from. More importantly, they "MMAified" their grappling and wrestling. They learned to wrestle when someone is striking and strike when someone is wrestling, so technically what made them great in MMA was their ability to MMA wrestle. It's a skillset that is unique to MMA. The idea of which style is superior was talk from the 90s and outdated. MMA is MMA.

I'd say sambo is their basis. If you want fight like Fedor & Khabib, you have to start with sambo. Honestly, I didn't see many moves by them that were restricted in sambo. It was kinda honest opinion by Karelin

I'd say that Fedor Emelianenko, Oleg Taktarov, Igor Vovchanchyn, Volk Han etc. were amongst the first to demonstrate the power of Sambo in MMA. But I agree Khabib was instrumental for the UFC.

Lets say you have a street fight and your opponents are at the same weight jj, gsp, khabib, who would you be more scared of? look at their matches (not highlitgs) and tell me.

Tyson was scary because he was mentally unstable and had bad opponents. Karelin is a calm man with 900-1 score and would destroy Tyson in anything except boxing. Including MMA, weightlifting etc.

Sambo outside of wrestling may the best foundation for mma. Jiu-jitsu is probably next then you have to know how to strike.

karelin spent a lot of time in the gym, but not sitting around thinking. fighters become better and better the more they learn from other disciplines, they do not struggle like karelin seems to think.
