Great video Matt. I've heard from other content creators that Fedora can be considered a 'go-between' in rolling-release distros, being between Debian is updated less, and Arch which is constantly updated. Another comparison that brings in an alternative factor is that MX Linux customizes Debian Kernel releases to work efficiently with not only their MX Tools we highly tout; but also providing a better driver updates that the MX team stays more on top of than the lagging Debian option. Like MX; Fedora can have this effect to the point that it may be more beneficial for some rather than Arch, which has less 'oversight' in drivers meeting the demands of fast AUR turnarounds in app updates.

Late last night, I made the switch to Fedora Linux 36 from Windows 11 Pro. I noticed an early sign of Windows that Microsoft will have a complete control of your computer in the near future and guess what? You don't even own them as long as you are using Windows OS. As for Fedora, it seems works and cope well with my system and app I used on Windows almost available on Linux as well. Few apps not on Linux so looking for alternative is no problem. Did I regretted made that decision? Nah. I noticed the performance in Linux drastically increased!

I am a new user, that switched to Linux from Windows and of course my first choice was Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. I did install it and it ran ok, but after switching off my laptop it just wouldn't start, some issue with snapd, from threads with similar problems I guess it was an M2 SSD support issue for some brands. Currently I installed Fedora 35 and it works fine, no issues for now, though the installer was a bit confusing and not as straightforward as Ubuntu's.

@@lennart3100 Fedora's installer is called Anaconda, it's also used for RH enterprise linux, CentOS, etc. What I actually like about Anaconda is that it explicitly lets you confirm things as an extra safety, which is especially great with disk partitioning. I am a very advanced Linux user and kind of a control freak / very precise person. I have a multi boot setup on my laptop (with Windows and Arch Linux). I have chosen to install Fedora next to it and therefore I do complete custom partitioning with my ESP and my Btrfs subvolumes exactly as I want them, and Anaconda is actually quite good with that. While for example with Debian's installer if you want Btrfs you litteraly need to switch to another TTY and unmount the target folders by yourself and than manually perform all commands to create the Btrfs filesystem and it's subvolumes and finally remount the thing again for the installer so that it can continue. Debian is a also very great system though (Ubuntu is NOT great in my opinion, because Snaps and things are total crap).

Fedora 36 was actually finally released right on the date of your video: 10 may 2022. ;) I have kept checking that "Fedora Linux 36 Schedule" webpage on their website during the last weeks, 10 may was actually "Final Target date #3" on that. I have installed Fedora next to Arch and Windows on my laptop (Anaconda is actually kinda great with precise partitioning options, especially because I use Btrfs for every Linux system), I it's great. It's indeed super modern and progressive. And I need modern kernel versions on this laptop, not just an easier installing videodriver. Fedora definitely not the "keep it simple" mind (actually hard to customize certain basic things in the system due to a lot of complexity), but for that we already have the GREAT Arch Linux, which is very modern with it's package versions as well (very parallel to Fedora). Great NVIDIA tip for laptops with hybrid graphics: If you dual boot like me, it's very easy to copy Arch's great "prime-run" script to a bin folder on Fedora. But about Ubuntu, I am actually a bit fed up with it, and yes it's largely because Snap = crap, but especially also because Firefox has been moved to it, which dramatically increases startup time. Open source and quality have become less and less Ubuntu's first priority, but market share is actually given the main priority. And the invasive proprietary Snap store is just one other example of it. It's desktop is indeed GREAT though and I love it! But it's not enough for me, I want an actually good distro, which it is not. And oh yeah I really like APT indeed, and so I like Debian a lot. Especially for it's idialistic vision, stability and being as free and open source as possible. Note about that last point that this is why I actually respect Debian and Fedora for having closed source repos disabled by default. For me it's actually kind of a possitive thing, not a negative one. Because you can still enable them if you like.

Thanks for such a great video Matt. I do have a question, it's about the how are so many organizations focused in developing different Linux DIstros but few of them are trying to develop better productivity, graphical design, and gaming software for linux? I have always considered that those kind of applications are as or more important than the OS per se. It has been years since Linux has been available to the market and I feel that for those users have the need to use in a daily basis Microsoft Office 2016 / 2021, Adobe's suites, or games such as Skyrim Ultimate, Borderlands, Stellaris, etc but in Windows instead of Linux... it can be deterring the lack of information if those programs can actually be run on Linux or not. I have this ignorance if those kind of software can or not run on a Linux environment and how stable and secure would they be? So personally I use Linux in very simple stuff and keep my Windows 10 for real important things. Itpresume that most people might see Linux an OS for geeks, something interesting that some hackers and developers use, and not for real problems, solutions or gamming, which is a shame at the end (I say some as you know those "few" people). I can't believe that in so many years Linux doesn't have an Office suite as competitive or better than Microsoft Office. Obviously there's the money factor but seriously a OS that has so many distros but so few sophisticate productivity software, there must be something wrong. Would it be to much to ask if you can build up a series of casts talking about this topic, on if Linux is or isn't behind in productivity, design and gaming technology / apps in comparison to Windows desktops OS? What is been done in those areas and where to find info about it? I would really appreciate it. Thanks for everything.

@albussd

Good questions Danilo. The thing is, Microsoft has been a dominant player in the desktop computing arena for a few decades now due to multiple reasons. They got hold of the market early, timing was good for them, and they proceeded to developing productivity software based on identification of users' needs. It's a company with commercial operations, so has paid developers whose sole job is to make such software and bring quality into it. Therefore, the efforts of Microsoft are targeted and concerted. And of course all of this takes money (lot of it). And Microsoft has been doing a terrific job of it. The Office suite, out of which I am a power user of Excel and PowerPoint are very advanced software which take care of user's design and ease-of-use needs. While using these software I can see that MS has put a lot of thought into it and for that, kudos to them. Compare that to Linux where such concerted, targeted efforts are lacking and fragmentation exists. I have no answer for why even now a competitive and polished Office suite doesn't yet exist for Linux, but I imagine that software development is easier said than done. It takes lot of time, effort, and money. On that note, I have heard that, as of the time of writing this comment, OnlyOffice is a good option for Linux and is compatible with MS documents for a good part. I have not tried it yet. Do give it a try I'd say. As for LibreOffice, it's very far from being a quality software, unfortunately.

Up to 14:00 you are very focused on UI and details of a few programs (distibution and package installers...), and so far I have not so much a good idea of how they compare globally. As dev (HPC, AI, desktop, graphics) and researcher and admin (VM, servers, desktops), I will be more interested in maintenance of packages (eg., can I use easily the lastest release of X, or dev version of Y, are they well maintained), how much cluttered is the distro, ease of management of network, samba, hardware, drivers, and possibly how much they customize their distribution and make it so custom one need to search too often somewhere on the web how to do admin things (add service, add driver, change window manager), which is a huge drawback (eg., I appreciate FreeBSD a lot for its simple direct administration).

So my main concern is I want to know why. It's difficult for me to explain what I mean by that. Say I'm learning to drive. I learned stick shift first and it translated perfectly when jumping into an automatic transmission. Or musical instruments. You have the same notes, but some are strings, some brass or woodwind, some are percussive or a combination. Learning electric keyboard translates perfectly to piano and pipe organ, but not bass guitar. Bass guitar is easy to go to lead guitar, but is probably not the same as ukulele or violin... So, we have .rpm and .deb. along with a command line difference between apt and dnf. Is that the only difference? Is navigation via terminal exactly the same? If I gain full command control of backend of Ubuntu, can I get a job at a company maintaining their business with redhat? Will experience in backend of fedora let me know how to tinker on a Mac (Mac is deb, no?)? Back to the car analogy, a stickshift driver is a better end user than the automatic. I want to be the best end user in my long term goals. With musical instruments, a guitar player is not objectively a better end user than a drummer or a saxophonist. They're just hitting the same notes from a different approach. In this sense, I suppose the reason why to pick one is the part I don't get. Sure harmonica is nice but I would probably prefer spending most time learning and playing guitar or piano to make music with regularly. Any thoughts?

I installed Ubuntu on a second laptop back in 2009. I wont say im a power user. I struggled thru the few problems i had many times askimg help in the forums. Watching a video complaining how Ubuntu was releasing old versions of Gnome and then some packages were the old version and others were new... and complaining about snaps i thought i would tey Fedora. I like it very much. There were more things to do right after installing... like getting dvd mp3 and other video codecs to work... also i like the resize button on my windows... but after that it works like a champ. Will see if i can upgrade to 37 when it comes out or i have to clean install and then do all the work again getting it like i like it.

I'm not a linux savy guy, I just use it casually. but can fedora utilize ubuntus repositories? cuz if it, then there are a gazillion number of packages for different fields that are available for ubuntu but not others. it just makes life drastically easier if you are on ubuntu. if fedora does something for this, and somehow make this a reality where if something is not available on its official repos, it can use ubuntus, then that would be a game changer. (If I'm not they are both debian based, so they should work together right? please correct me if I'm wrong)

Fedora does not support the Ubuntu apt repos, as Matt says in the video Fedora uses dnf which is different to apt. However with the RPMFusion repos installed you get access to a huge amount of software, pretty much equal to Ubuntu's repos imho. I am sure there are missing apps on both sides but with RPMFusion installed I can't recall the last time I wasn't able to just _dnf install_ something.

I think ubuntu apt is overall a better a package manager than yum, even though is not easy to install stuff on apt, yum doesnt make it any easier. Both distros also have weird standards that they made up and bundle lots of packages you are not even going to use, so i think the package manager is the deal breaker in this case

It was once my opinion that if you only can have one operating system, then you first choose whether you want an rpm-based distro or a Debian-based distro. Then if you choose the rpm-based then from there you would decide if Fedora is better for you than OpenSUSE or Mageia, RHEL, or AlmaLinux. It is too bad something like Korora never became a major player. However, I now only run Linux inside a Chromebook container. I would tell newbies to try Linux if they have access to a Chromebook.

Yeah a minimal (no desktop) install then installing _just_ gnome-shell and any other applications you want gives you a very nice, minimalistic install. Not quite Arch minimal but tbh I've never really cared for hand picking every single package installed. I just don't want the app picker littered with things I never use. The base system I am happy to just use how it comes providing it works.

But i couldn't make the switch to nvidia from integrated intel gpu with Optimus-Manager. Lastly i added optimus-manager.startup=nvidia to the kernel boot parameters. and it still didn't work, at least by doing so, i'm now sure that problem wasn't Ly DM related (i also deleted Ly and try it with StartX), either some nvidia related package i should have installed is missing or nvidia propietary driver causing the issue.

I remember recently hearing some thing that in a upcoming version of fedora either 36 or 37, the Fedora team is planning on making a change where if you don’t run UEFI on your computer as opposed to legacy bios, you won’t be able to do a clean install a fedora. You can upgrade from an old version if you already had fedora installed but you can’t do a clean install say with a USB stick. Have you heard anything about this?

If you *are* a turbo nerd with a high-end PC and you're going to start screwing around trying to get you Steam games running as well as they possibly could (or whatever else), Fedora's actually going to break *less* because it's kind of built for your "I want this cool new thing, let's screw around" mentality.

Bro I've been asking this question in every Linux forum there is, I have a 6TB WD MY Book External Desktop HDD Drive, it's connected via USB3 but ain't powered by the PC, it draws power straight via these charger thingies; I have 2 worries, I didn't know U have to Install a fqn driver for this piece of sh1t otherwise its cooling and sh1t wont work, USB suspension ejects it, etc... when you install the driver, Windows recognizes it as a typical internal HDD and only then functions properly; There's no official or unofficial driver for this sack of sh1t... AND it doesn't support any file format other than NTFS. I have another 4tb Internal NTFS those are SSD I could free 1tb for Dual boot, but since i DO NOT wanna use windows anymore I dunno what to do with that MyBook fq Me; worst thing I ever bought; and as I understand its safer Not to expose NTFS partition inside linux OS; besides u gotta understand I cant move around 10 tb of data (all stored in NTFS partitions for that matter) given all that any suggestions as to how can I stop MyFq from turning on, it turns on the same time as other USB ports, keep that one off log into linux? basically is there a way to turn off a particular USB-port (well there is, in the bios), then turn it on once the Windows is already has booted up?
@TheLinuxCast
@TheLinuxCast 2 жыл бұрын
I have the same problem. The only thing that ever worked for me with myBook is to add it to the fstab so that it's loads at startup. Then it only loads once. Then it only spins up when you try to browse through it. TBH, ntfs support on Linux is garbage because it's a Windows proprietary crap, and it's hard for that stuff to get ported to Linux. Probably should be thankful it works at all and isn't just an expensive AF paperweight. What I plan on doing is getting another drive and then doing some musical data so I can get the one I have now to ext4 or btfs.
