Feds to cut down hundreds of Cherry Blossoms at the Tidal Basin, including Stumpy

Yesterday they announced they would cut down several hundred cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin (I heard 300, but it seems now more like 150). Rising water levels have damaged the seawall near the Jefferson Memorial and they are going to remove the trees to fix the seawall, including the most iconic cherry blossom--Stumpy. This is a small tree that refuses to die, blooming each year despite the fact most of the tree is now gone.

Seems like they could transplant Stumpy. But wait...that is much to logical for the government. It is "how much can we screw things up and anger as many people as possible?"

The tradition of celebrating the blooming of cherry trees in Japan is centuries old. The planting of cherry trees in Washington DC originated in 1912 as a gift of friendship to the People of the United States from the People of Japan.

Don't understand why they don't graft the trees to root stock so the original ones can continue living . These trees were a gift to our country and deserve the honor of carrying that symbol forward. Can't believe it that the decision to just rip them out has been made. Hopefully they will rethink the decision. I know the repair work to the Poole needs to be done ,but don't destroy 100 year old trees. SAVE THEM AS GRAFTS!!!

Isn't there an organization that can replant those trees? I hate waste. Looks like the community could get together and take them to another place to replant to improve the neighborhoods. When our city streets were being widened, I asked the owners of the rootbeer stand if I could have the shrubs to plant in my front yard so they wouldnt be thrown away. They turned out beautiful in my yard 😍 Thanks Andrew 😊

It is nice to see the flags for those who lost their lives to colorectal cancer. However, everyone who died of colorectal cancer should be recognized regardless of their age as opposed to limiting the recognition for those between 20 and 50 only. This is ageism against all those under 20 years old and against all those over 50 years old who all could of died of colorectal cancer in their teens and younger and over 50 as well.

I don't think any of the Tidal Basin trees are origional. Actually the tree in the garden of the Jefferson Building is from the period but wasn't of the original gift. It has been used to replenish the trees on the Tidal Basin. I think many of the trees being removed aren't doing well because they are overwatered because if the flooding. NPS does have a growing program so they can replace trees destroyed by whatever... including beavers.

I lived within a national park. There’s something most don’t get. The NPS is not in the business of making money. They can print more money. They don’t need tourism. They have more “customers” flocking to national parks than they care to deal with. People are a maintenance nightmare! They want to do everything possible to make it as difficult and miserable as possible so as to deflect people from coming.

I’m sure that many professional arborists have been consulted about these iconic trees, so it has not been just a willy-nilly decision. The root systems would be enormous & difficult to remove in order to transplant them, & the trees might not survive. My hope is that, as someone else mentioned, they can take grafts of some of them, then after the wall is fixed, replant the new grafted trees. And I do hope they send some of the wood to artists who can make some beautiful pieces to be displayed somewhere.

I like your idea, Friend. Also Cherry Wood is good in a smoker. In any case I hope they don’t put it all in a chipper and into a compost pile. The wood is historic and should be put towards a profitable use. Maybe proceeds can go to feed the hungry.

Not a chance. This is another political decision to erase history. If you know how the Park Service operates, 'consulting many professional arborists' is the last thing they'd do. If they need to pretend, they might pay some cronies to say it happened. If only the government worked the way many people think it works.

@@crcr1 There is no political decision here to erase history, and the fact that you claim it is makes me wonder if you are drunk, high, or just plain stupid. The reality is that the trees are either dead or dying, and they need to replace the seawall n the area and these trees are just in the way. When the repair is done they will plant new cherry trees.
