Is it only leafy greens? I haven't seen potatoes, broccoli, carrots, brussel sprouts, or other heart vegetables that contribute greatly to the caloric needs of the population. The agriculture division, I believe, is the most immediately exciting part of what you're all doing.

Would love to know this too. Since I've read this study about wheat yield potential in vertical farming I have become somewhat disillusioned with the idea of using solar panels to power LED lights to grow food. www.pnas.org/content/117/32/19131 I think can feed like 90.000 people with a 1 gigawatt nuclear power plant. CubicFarm claims that the moving trays scrolling past a few LED lights reduce the energy costs but I can't imagine how that would work for calories? Producing feedstock for animals for slaughter seems even crazier for the energy balance.

@Dejay Rezme it wouldn't be cost effective to grow grains like wheat, rye, rice, barley, etc in a hydroponic environment to full maturity for bread and other food. This design they're doing is mainly to grow grains for animal fodder, but the animals really also need fiber in their diet otherwise their digestive system gets screwed up, ruminate animals digestive system doesn't work like humans, dogs, pigs.

I'd be highly interested to see research into integrating this with aquaponics instead of hydroponics. The latter results in so much discharge of chemical-laden water, whereas aquaponics has a closed water system with no need for nutrient input or water/chemical discharge.

is it run by LED light only? how many Kilowatt-hours of electricity do you need to harvest one kg of dry mass? what is the lifetime of such a unit? what is the carbon footprint of the machinery in relation to the harvest output? and how many square meters of photovoltaic panels would it need to produce the required electricity ?

Sustainable!?! That container alone consumed more energy through its production than it’d produce as veggies. I see a lot of hot air marketing here. Hell, putting on a transparent top would probably make it just a bit more ‘sustainable’

Hello, thank you for your comment! Farming in both an traditional manner or within indoor environments utilize equipment that requires manufacturing and therefore energy consumption at upstream sources. Cubicfarms is confident in its benefits when viewing this from a full life cycle sustainability prospective.
