Since I've read this study about wheat yield potential in vertical farming I have become somewhat disillusioned with the idea of using solar panels to power LED lights to grow food. www.pnas.org/content/117/32/19131 I think can feed like 90.000 people with a 1 gigawatt nuclear power plant. CubicFarm claims that the moving trays scrolling past a few LED lights reduce the energy costs but I can't imagine how that would work for calories? Producing feedstock for animals for slaughter seems even crazier for the energy balance.

I have seen hydroponic grown potatoes, I haven't seen anyone trying carrots though.

​@Dejay Rezme it wouldn't be cost effective to grow grains like wheat, rye, rice, barley, etc in a hydroponic environment to full maturity for bread and other food. This design they're doing is mainly to grow grains for animal fodder, but the animals really also need fiber in their diet otherwise their digestive system gets screwed up, ruminate animals digestive system doesn't work like humans, dogs, pigs.

I have done something similar like that, you can definitely do this. I used two 120W lm281 panels and a hlg240 driver. A raspberry pi controls the led driver as well as water pumps and ventilation fans.
