Feeding deer in northern Maine is becoming common place. Winters are long and hard, coupled with predation and loss of wintering habitat...sometimes the herd needs all the help they can get. However, if supplemental feeding is done incorrectly, it can actually cause more harm than good. Follow along as we discuss when, where, why and how you should go about feeding deer in the winter and why sometimes not feeding them at all may be the better option. Enjoy!

Always enjoyable gents, and an interesting topic. We cannot feed in PA. Per our Game Commission, “ It is unlawful to intentionally lay or place food, fruit, hay, grain, chemical, salt or other minerals anywhere in this Commonwealth for the purpose of feeding big game to include Elk, Deer, Bear and Turkey”. No doubt a reaction to CWD. It has hit our state hard in the South Central region. We also have predation issues. Many Coyotes, and the Fisher has made a strong return. I am also old enough to have seen changes in our state forests. Areas that were cleared 30 years ago are now mature. Mature areas from 30 years ago no longer holding deer. It is a cycle. And I still say 4 degrees is cold (that was me)😂

Very interesting Dave. Isn’t it crazy how fast a forest can change. We always hope it changes for the better…but that never really seems to be the case. Thanks for watching!

@@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast just curious, Paul. Do you or your dad ever shoot doe? How does the season run there? For example, PA is a concurrent 2 week rifle season, antlered and antlerless. How does Maine run the seasons? I would enjoy that as a podcast, explaining your seasons.

For the most part, Maine runs an antlerless deer permit lottery (with some additional nuances in the laws). I think that would be a great topic to include. Thanks for the input!

A lot of the changes in the farming community have also hurt the deer herd. The farms used to have a lot of hedge rows that had a lot of browse but they were removed to make way for larger equipment and bigger fields. We always left oat fields that were seeded with clover to be plowed down in the spring. Now, if you look at the farming practices, you see fields being plowed under starting in August and by October you will be hard pressed to find a field with clover in it. If you look, you can find some with Winter rye, but the percentage of fields that are bare dirt has grown exponentially in the last 30 years.

Boys you're right. The agricultural side of northern Maine has changed over the yrs. Blows my mind how fast and efficiently a farm can harvest a couple thousand acres of potatoes and still manage to till their cover crop before winter.

Very informative podcast Paul,Mark . As someone who used to raise/farm Whitetails there's so much to know prior to "dumping " feed. Wish i could've chimed in at times but you guys did a great job 👍

In Missouri, they don't allow feeding in counties that have CWD. In the areas around the cities they don't want you to feed them at all. Another Great podcast!

We have been having a very mild winter up until this past weekend, it hit 34 below in our area. The good thing is that the bucks and bulls have had a lot of time to recover from the rut, last winter it started early and lasted all winter. That takes its toll and I noticed it this past fall, not near as many big mature animals around.

Yikes, 34 below...thats getting cold🥶. I agree, it makes a big difference if the bucks get a little recovery post rut. Otherwise, that can make for a rough winter. Appreciate the comment👍.

Predator control is currently historic high in our area. Many deer hunters switch over to yotes in December when the night hunting starts. I personally do it all year long via calling and I have killed more than 20 yotes behind your house in the last three years. Another predator not often talked about is the eagle. I saw a very large eagle, (not a Bald Eagle) try to take down a large doe this fall, and it almost succeeded. Fox will also impact fawn survival rate. Fawning cover is a much needed habitat improvement in our area.

A lot of people out there coyote hunting which is fantastic. Snaring was such a useful tool because of its efficiency regarding both time and money spent. Thanks for sharing👍

Great podcast, very interesting on feeding deer in Maine. Here in NYS it is illegal to feed deer anytime, I do know some people that do it on private land, not sure what effect it has on the deer population around their property. Keep up the good work, always looking forward to what’s coming next.

Paul and Mark!!!! Great job as always gentleman! This is why my family and I avidly follow and watch your channel, you are not afraid to talk about the controversial topics. Mark I so wholeheartedly agree with you! I think supplemental feeding can be a good thing. I fully admit, I’m not a biologist, but the US Fish and Wildlife Service feeds the Elk at the National Elk Refuge!!??? Why does one biologist say it’s ok and another says it’s not? Thank you gentlemen for having these conversations and making the public aware. I truly think our deer in the NMW’s could be fed if done the correct way. I’ve heard rumor that Maines lead moose biologist Kantar has publicly stated the NMW’s will only be managed for moose. I do not know if that’s true. I hope IF& W is looking out for our deer in northern Maine . Thank you whole heartedly for discussing these topics!!!!

Last point...let the state offer incentives for land owners to plant and leave crops that will help fatten up the deer before winter. I plant 8-9 acres every year and it is not cheap. This would help the natural browse last longer during the winter and improve survival rates.
@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast

That would be a great incentive. Might be great to offer some incentives to the forest industry also...money talks😂

We had a Maine Biologist come to our house to make sure what we were doing and where we were doing it was approved. We were approved, and also our deer only come when there is an abundance of snow on the ground. When they start coming we only place small piles of oats and cracked corn to feed them. Our deer are doing great.
