I really thought that bees fed on what they collected from flowers.

They do, but only when there is nectar and pollen being produced by local plants, in this case the nectar flow is over in their area so the bees cannot collect anything to store. they also require nectar/honey to make their wax, so feeding allows them to draw comb without using their honey stores so they can save it for winter.

Awesome video! Yes please share more progress with beekeeping with Mark. I also agree about using a double stacked 5 frame nucleus hive for allowing a colony to grow. I tend to agree the bees do much better building faster when using that setup. I like how Mark used the empty plastic container to cover the jar when top feeding. Very smart and well thought out. Beekeeping is an AMAZING hobby. We can learn and enjoy so much insight just by watching and listening to the reasoning behind the decisions we make. Love it...! I have had an interest in bees for quite some time. For now, I'll just have to watch some video's and learn. My stepfathers, son is starting some hives, so I'm hoping to learn some there as well. I have never been afraid of bees. Red wasps are a different story. Enjoyed this one guys..! Jo
