This film shares a little behind the scenes efforts from one private land owner's perspective as our deer and elk herds in Utah are dealing with a very challenging winter. Record snowfall and externes periods of time with below freezing temperatures are creating significant stress on many of our animals. We've joined Daniel and Travis with R&K Hunting Co. to get a look at how they are helping out in these difficult times and a bit of an education on how this collaborative effort between state and private citizens are making a positive impact this winter. This is part I of a 2 part series called, "Feeding Deer"

Thanks guys ! I am not from Utah but I really appreciate seeing educated land owners who feed wildlife appropriatly. It is not cheap and takes lots of effort. Refreshing to see a land ower who treats the wildlife like the privilege they are to have around not a burden that needs eliminated.

Kudos to the ranchers who work hard to feed the elk and deer. Hay isn’t cheap. Now days $350/ton. Management is key for future generations. Education for the public is so important. Keep up the hard work guys. Thanks for sharing. Take care, see ya :)

Super informational video. Where I grew up and still hunt, there is a big mule deer hunt area. The owner's have always done the same thing on bad winter's. This farm has several irrigation circles that also provide food thru the winter. It amazes me the amount of people that don't understand how it work's and how it also helps the surrounding area's.

Very educational, in my home State of Oregon and where I live (Central Oregon) they put up large signs along Hwy 97 during Migration to let people know that it is Migration Season for the Deer, in hopes they will not only watch how fast their driving, but to be aware that there is a likelihood herds of deer crossing the Hwy, I've seen up to 30 deer crossing that Hwy during Migration, it does help, I just hope people driving understand how important it is to pay attention👍

Appreciate anyone that helps animals! Especially in rough winters. Here in ND they struggle all the time. That’s way they eat the hay bales that we feed the cows. Cuz there not much out there for them

Excellent footage and information, Hopefully the big snowstorms the west is getting this winter will be followed with good rain this summer to help with the drought’s. I had a uncle that would keep in touch and would go and hunt every so often some of our distance family members that had land on the north west side of Yellowstone, they would set aside some acres of hay for the deer and elk for feeding during winter. That was 20+ years ago but they would lose so much wildlife and cattle to mountain lions 👍✌🏻🇺🇸

Good to see ranches doing this to help out the herds but also brings an underlining thought on how many cases of CWD are in the area? Having feeding sites like these makes the spread a little easier but im sure its very minimal. Maybe a future video?

As of right now not that we are aware of. Matt and Brayden have reached out to local biologists to help haul feed for the deer on public land. Maybe reach out to your local biologist

Great video. I live in southwest Colorado at 9,000 feet. All of the elk have left because of all the snow expected 5 old cows that decided to stay and not go to lower elevation. They have been living with my horses. Hopefully stealing some meals from the horses will get them through the winter.

@@SHEDi21 cattle will graze and browse along with domestic sheep. That’s why you will see a lot in Montana all the cattle on public and the majority of wildlife on the private. Then in turn the private can lease out the hunting.

Agree ! The over grazing of public land is nuts . The BLM and Forest service grazing permits are relics from the past that need to be reviewed. The grazing permit programs were developed when there was zero consideration for wildlife. Today the mountainous public land is some of the most prized and utilized resources by everyone. And we let it get overgrazed down to the dirt !!! The ranchers with the grazing permits are some of the WORST land stewards and terrible on the resource. The grazing permits cost the rancher next to nothing but cost the public everything. Time to revaluate this 100 year old charity and take a sharp look at public land grazing permits ! Wake up Forest Service ! Wake up BLM !

Great video!!! Hunters are the biggest supporters of wildlife in many different ways. I’m not against feeding the deer and elk. My question is if it can lead to a bigger spread of CWD?

Definitely a possibility. Unfortunately this winter the deer and elk were already pushed in such tight quarters and were running out of feed and energy. That’s why we try out best to spread the feed out over many locations along the ranch. Double edged sword in my opinion.

Feeding big game only makes matters worse. You only allow more carryover on the winter range which overgraze the food sources. It gets worse as years go by and eventually leads to catastrophic die offs. Go to wildlife experts if you want an education on wildlife management. Most ranchers are livestock experts. You can’t treat big game as livestock and expect successful results. Nature is sometimes harsh, but we need to remember the reason why we have the abundance of big game in the first place. Let nature do it’s job.

Around Dad's place in WA, definitely don't need to feed any wildlife, a lot of wheat stubble, grasses, elk, muleys, white tail, turkeys, thriving. Nuisance almost.

That would be nice. The snowpack here drives all the animals down into very condensed areas, and competing with growing construction and neighborhoods they are losing critical refuge areas.

I'll be willing to donate time to help... for free. I've tried to offer help through the mule deer foundation but all they want is massive amounts of money through banquets. I dropped my membership because of this. I see that ranchers do shown on the video as more productive. If ranchers & others have connections to line me up, I'm willing to offer time. I've tried to reach out before old school style but everyone's so suspicious they turn it down. Last time someone was open to my offer by my just driving roads & looking for the need & offering was 20 years ago. For area reference, I'm in the Layton area.

I sure wish my state would stop introducing more predators. 7 years ago I had 35+ deer in my yard every night. This year I'm yet to see one. That and the winter of 3 ft on snow then it rained for a few days. I watched deer actually go in my wood shed. Poor things had ice sicles hangin off them.

Well it is great to see and just go's to show you the sportsman does more for animals then most there is the same problem with no feed in the northeast in the mountains I have seen a fox with a ear of corn eating it so that in itself no food for Predators deer bear turkey now abf is going to kill off waterfowl I hope not really hope not but time will tell

Those deer are all dead, deer have a selective diet due to highly specialized bacteria in there rumen. When deer are feed non-native forages theyll die with full stomachs because they cannot diggest hay or other cultivated plants. The Western Association of Fish and Wildlife (WAWFA) has set as a best managment practice to not feed deer or antelope for this reason.

There’s no rut mule deer hunts in Utah like in Montana.. and Montana has no room to talk about conservation with the wolf and bear numbers decimating their deer and elk populations 😂

@@GENERALEEOUTSIDE I’m in Montana, the main reason there isn’t many big bucks anymore is because of all the hunting in the rut and no restrictions on size. Everyone drives around and shoots forky bucks off the road during the rut.
