Opuntia is good source of dietary hydration and calcium.
People commonly feed cucumbers to tortoises but over feeding cucumbers can lead to block the calcium absorption.
Disclaimer : Indian star tortoises are illegal to buy, sell or keep as pets in India.
Despite being scheduled species they have been sold and kept as pets.
This video is not supporting to keep them in captivity but such things are not under my control.
So, trying to educate people keeping them in captivity illegally to understand what environmental and dietary needs these tortoises need.
This does not mean we support captivity

My tortoise won't move at all . She hasn't been eating or drinking for more than 25 days now. Vets have given antibiotics but no improvement . They diagnosed it could be either respiratory infection or metabolic bone disorder due to which her jaw is dislocated . There's is no reptile expert her so they won't confirm untill proper checkup. She has stopped moving all of sudden since this evening . She was kept in warm shallow water as per told by the vet and suddenly she stopped moving . Head is still inside her shell but legs are limp and she won't respond to any touch . Could you please tell what to do . Can she be in coma or has she passed away . It's hard to tell

If there is no movement at all and limbs are loose without any reflexes then she might have passed away. Better to get it confirmed by the vet.

I understand varied diet that you are feeding ur tortoises..but nonetheless they still got pyramiding shell. Was there no way to control the pyramid ?

Pyramiding is not totally linked with diet. Also these tortoises were rescued/ adopted so they were already in such condition before I got them. The amount of pyramiding you saw in this video is totally normal for Indian Star tortoises.

Not at all. I'm not supporting people breeding these tortoises illegally in filthy conditions. The only reason I post egg laying videos is to make people aware that their female tortoise will start producing eggs in future and without having proper husbandry, she'll get egg bound and can die if does not get timely treatment.

@@IndianStarTortoise ok , I understand. I forgot to think that these animals are illigal and should not be used to reproduce offspring, it's quite unethical. I was thinking of getting these animals but yesterday I understood that this animal is illigal in my country (I live in india) . So I am going a different route.

They can survive few days without food so no need to panic for half day! Still if you are worried then get it checked by a vet.

White powdery thing is urate, normal in tortoises. However if you think your tortoise is constipated you can consult a vet.

🙄 tortoise is just like a kid we have to make them to feed all time it is lot of struggle but be patient and positive 🙄 it takes time but wait for it and give some time and play with them

I would correct on this. Tortoises are not like a kid, if you feed them all the time by hands then you are doing it wrong. You might need to hand feed a tortoise only if the tortoise is sick or you trying to feed new leaves or greens.

At last you can use ciplox if you don’t have any vet around but in general we should avoid self medication.

No, you don’t need it as it is already warm there. For vitamin D, you’ll need natural sunlight available in the enclosure. If you don’t get sunlight then the best would be to submit it to local wildlife department or any NGO.

It can be metabolic bone disease and you should consult a reptile vet as soon as possible. If there’s no vet available in your city then please handover the tortoise to local wildlife department.

They can live alone and socialise sometimes but please don’t bring another tortoise in captivity just because you feel pity about the tortoise being alone. If you are really worried then please handover your tortoise to local wildlife department or good NGO.🙏

Ya tortoise india ma banned ha toh aap na kyu rakha ha aapka pass? Or vasabhi government na konsa bhi law nahi nikala ha ki aap konsa bhi illegal animals,reptiles,birds ko ghar pa rakh sakta ho or aap usko conservation karsakta ho. Or aagar aapko star tortoise ko conserve karna ha toh aap usko konsa bhi (wildlife Rescue center) ma ya fir (zoo) ma ya fir konsa bhi (wildlife Rescuer) ko da sakta ho or vo wild ma release kardaga plz aap aasa mat karo Government ma sabkaliya same he rule banya ha plz aap follow karo. Or aagar aapko konsa tortoise rakha ha toh aap legal tortoise rakha sakta ha jasa redfoot tortoise sulcata tortoise rakha sakta ho. Hope u understand.
