Always loved Peter Buck's playing. This song in particular contains some great, inventive playing.

As some of you noticed, I didn't explain the last bit of the main riff (must have got lost in the edit somehow.) But it's just this: E7, B7, G10. E7, B7, G10. Open B E B. Free tab on my site should make it clear: www.anyonecanplayguitar.co.uk/feeling-gravitys-pull/

I went up to Tony Harris the Engineer of Fables studio a few years ago and played the acoustic he'd lent Buck for Driver 8.

I remember eagerly waiting for this album to come out after playing Chronic Town, Murmur and Reckoning to death. It's one of my favorites. Both alienating and comforting at the same time. Shortly after this I began playing guitar and writing songs myself. Big influence. Thanks Adrian, I will have fun revisting playing this one.

It's strange how they hated this album. I absolutely loved it. I kind of drifted away from them in the later years but I reckon they did about 6 or 7 classic albums in a row which I'm not sure any other bands have ever done. Keep up the good work Adrian. You are an inspiration.

Thank you from Texas. Fables of the Reconstruction was a major influence on me during my early college years. I will look forward to working on this! I love your channel and your style!

Great lesson. Clear and concise. Buck was a big guitar anti-hero for a lot of us in my college days: no solos, jangley arpeggios, and the always mysterious chording as opposed to the hair metal bands who were big at the same time. Thanks for bringing back some great memories. I’ll definitely relearn this one.

Peter Buck was playing a black Tele Custom at about this time. I remember him using it on Whistle Test, on Pretty Persuasion and on Old Man Kensey, which was unreleased at that time.

He was playing the black Custom 84, early 85. When they toured the Fables LP it was mainly a maple Rickenbacker 340 and a burgundy 330

Very splendid video, and thanks very much for this! Years ago, in the early 00's, I had come up with an alternative way to voice this song, which I've now entirely forgotten. Your video helped me correct 20+ years of failure! 🤣👍

This is freaking awesome...would never think anyone would do a lesson on this somewhat obscure 1980's song. First song I heard off of Fables when I bought it, never forget it. Nice work, can't say enough about how awesome your videos are.

Every so often (usually when I have chorus on already) I will give this a whirl but I could never quite get it right. I always got the first bit right but then couldn't get quite what he was playing and while I got close, it didn't have the right sound. So many thanks for this, it sounds pretty spot on to me. I will be playing this for weeks non stop, I suspect. Apparently I was trying to make it more difficult than it was.

Great choice as ever ! My favourite rem album. Waslucky enough to see them on that tour in a club in birmingham before they became huge and they opened with this. Very edgy and thrilling and far more exciting than they ended up. A real mystique aura about them.

Yup mine too. it ended the obviously Byrds influenced stuff but before they worked out 'rock'. Saw them as well on that tour in 85 (?) at liverpool royal court. Great gig. And yes they went on far too long, should have split after Monster. The later stuff just bored me. (well most of it)

Love REM. Favourite album is whatever one I’m listening to at the time. They always sounded “important”. Not sure that makes sense. Their 90’s output was the soundtrack to my youth. Automatic might be their zenith. Although I have a real soft spot for New Adventures in Hi-Fi. Also, I think the main reason I bought a Vox was the opening few bars of What’s the Frequency Kenneth. Another great lesson, by the way 👍🏼

They opened up with this when I saw them play at the Ritz in Manchester in 1985. From memory Peter Buck played it on a Rickenbacker 340 (a 3 pickup 330). I was 18 years old and crushed against the stage. Got to chat with them after the gig. Really nice guys and a night I’ll never forget.

@@paulhepburn2283 That’s right. Their album A Human Sound had just been released. I was near the back of The Ritz when they were on but somehow ended crushed up against the stage in front of Peter Buck when REM were on. Michael Stipe had to stop the set a couple of times to try and get everyone to take a couple of steps back.

Great lesson. The band talks about how miserable they were recording this record but I love the melancholy angle of most of the songs. A little trivia, Peter Buck took a break from the recording sessions to play his Rickenbacker 12-string on one track of the Dream Academy's first record.

My favourite track on my favourite REM album. Currently learning Debaser, by Pixies, from your excellent video but think I'll be switching between that and this. Keep up the good work. Also, could I suggest a song for you to do? "Snake dance," by the March Violets.

I'm getting a bit frightened. Are you, like, hard-wired to my musical brain? I'm a huge Peter Buck fan, and I play REM on my '89 Ricky 360 any chance I get. (When I learned that Buck notoriously used 13 gauge Dean Markley strings, I switched on my Ricky and 1967 Gretsch Tennessean and have never looked back. A big fat sound that is worth sacrificing the lack of string bending for (REM grammar there). Fables is such an original beauty! I'm so glad you're an REM fan. Fables knocks it out of the park, after Murmur and Reckoning. Buck and Marr, IMHO, defined 80s guitar.
