For me, Kate's voice is at its most beautiful in this song. And how like Kate to see the situation from the point of view of the man, waiting helplessly to hear news of he woman he loves and the child she carries. Sensitive writing and beautiful vocals.

I have loved two woman in my life, my wife and Kate Bush. I dare not say who I love the most incase she reads this ha ha. She is the best British female singer ever IMO. I can’t really describe what her music does to me as even after loving her music and listening to it almost daily since 1978 the meaning of the songs change my understanding of what she wants to achieve. Magical magical magical and although I a, nearly 60 yrs old she brings me to tears at times.

This song breaks my heart. My husband died 18 months ago. He had been poorly for a long time and had been put on a DNR ( do not resuscitate) I went into town to do some food shopping trying to get something to build him up. When I got back he was lying on the floor unresponsive. I ignored the DNR and called 999 but as soon as they came in they said he’s on a DNR . I said “do something a de fib “ which they did , I think for my benefit. But he had been down too long. Apparently you only have 4 minutes before the brain damage is irreversible. Afterwards I kept thinking all the things I wish I had said but I didn’t, all the things I wish I had done but I didn’t make these thoughts go away. I had kissed him before I left and he said “ I love you chelle “ I always answered “I know, me too “ Kate’s voice is haunting, it brings me to tears every time I hear this song, It took a paramedic who had attended that night to get through to me that even if they had got him back he would not have been a ‘functional’ person.’ But it doesn’t stop those regrets of wishing I had said that or done that.

HBK Luke. That movie made Kate's song "This Woman's work" about a pregnancy. But the video of this song, according to Kate it is about a relationship, where the man almost loses the woman he loves, and he is thinking about all the "regrets", "all the things he should have done and said", etc..and if you watch "This woman's work" original video, they show the relationship, then the women (Kate) suddenly collapses, he drives her to the hospital, and is in the waiting room devastated and the video shows Kate's spirit or whatever comforting him and also thinking about all the things she should have done and said. At the very end of the video a nurse comes into the waiting room and tells the man that the woman is going to be okay and he smiles with relief. Some watch the video and don't watch until the very end and miss the nurse telling him she's going to be okay.

You're right about Kate changing the "script" in the video (which she directed) to reflect a relationship where the wife suffers a medical emergency and is rushed to the hospital (there's no indication of a pregnancy). However she wrote it specifically for the movie scene reflecting Kevin Bacon's feelings as his wife and baby are in danger in the delivery room. Director John Hughes called Kate and asked her to write a song just for that part of the movie. Kate agreed and Hughes sent her a clip of the film and Kate played it in her studio while she wrote the song. Kate composed and recorded the song in a very short period of time.

I lost my son during childbirth and needed a hysterectomy soon after. When I was in the hospital, alone (the father Houdinied me when I told him I was pregnant, another gut wrenching moment, but it didn’t compare to loosing my son. Our son). This song went through my mind the entire time in the hospital. It’s still tough to listen to, but it’s an incredible song. Loved your review.

Probably the most overrated Kate Bush song. IT IS a pretty song, but the musical treatment and the lyrics are very basic and sentimental (more than "emotional"), nothing really impressive except the vocal performance which is gorgeous. But she has done so much better emotionally and lyrically in the same fashion. Just try "The Kick Inside" which is the closing track of her first album of the same name: much more powerful, romantic (in the true sense of the word), witty, dramatic, and the subject matter can be paralleled to this one allthough even darker, almost gothic. Same (except for the lyrical content) for "The Infant Kiss" on "Never for Ever", "Mrs Bartolozzi" and "A Coral Room" on "Aerial", or "Lake Tahoe" on 50 Words for Snow".I could name many others. Kate Bush is a genius when producing elaborated arrangements on her songs, but it's probably on her piano/voice compositions she's at her most emotionally effective. By the way, this is not a "live" performance but a lip-sync one for british television (she very rarely did real live performances for TV). The official video (Kate Bush directed herself) was much more interesting to comment, so well crafted and it perfectly illustrates the storytelling of the song. Anyway, glad young people of your generation seem to fall into KB's magical world Luke, she's an artist who deserves posterity and good luck for you into this fantastic discovery, there's so much to take. It's even better just sitting and listening to a whole album. You should try this experience. Cheers!

Here's a link for a rather strange performance she did for dutch television in 1978 for "The Kick Inside" which was not released as a single (but Kate Bush can't be limited to her commercial hits), incase you would like to explore her more "controversial" side (the song deals with an incestuous relationship between a sister and her brother): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nsBnZKiLppeUhok.html

@cuckoofan
@cuckoofan 2 жыл бұрын
@@yomo1690 It is for sure, and the video she directed for this song emphasizes that. After all, "This Woman's Work" was written to illustrate somebody else's vision and story. Kate Bush always dealt with emotions, but before "TW'sW", her way to do so was more distant, maybe symbolic, often a bit "uneasy", taking the risk to be seen as "controversial" in some ways (allthough it was never blatantly provocative). From "The Sensual World" album, I thought she began to sound easier to present emotions, and this peaked in "The Red Shoes" in which she wrote about very personal, somewhat trivial topics, which is fine, but it's not why I really admire her work. "This Woman's Work", for sure, is a very nice and moving song, beautifully sung but she can do much better, in a more subtle and intricate manner. I just find a bit unfair that songs like this should be more praised or remembered by the public than great work like "Breathing" or "A Coral Room" for instance. But, if it's way to drive people to KB's more elaborated work, then, it's probably a good thing.
