College usually is a waste.

Keep looking for an entry level job in your field. Preferably with a research lab of some kind. Be ready and willing to relocate. Consider grad studies to increase your chances for a career if you can afford/justify it. But above all, don't get stuck in the rut you're in now. I've learned career wise, that opportunities can come from the most unlikely places, at the most unlikely times. Don't give up.

This. I don' do freelance, but I did quit my full-time job last year due to it just not paying enough to pay the bills. I figure if I'm going to have nothing, I can earn it just as easily not working or only working part-time. I have yet to be proven wrong.

I haven't seen any comments condemning her. There is nothing to condemn her for. Lots of us have useless degrees. I blame the colleges. They're predatory like used-car salesmen.

@@CandiceMMartinez I think society often confuses "useless" with "worthless." I got a degree in education. I never expected to be rich, but I did expect to be able to move out of my parents' house. The problem is that society just doesn't value teachers and educators. They are worthless. It's not a useless degree at all. There are teacher shortages everywhere, and jobs are available; but no one wants to address the issues of underpayment, disrespect, and micromanagement. And it's not just teachers. It's social workers, librarians, and certain medical workers in addition to many others that I probably don't know about. I hate that people call so many of these degrees useless when what they really are is underpaid and underappreciated. Yes, there are degrees that might be considered "worthless" in an economy that values certain skill sets, but it's mostly been my experience that the reality is that jobs are either too competitive and/or they don't pay enough to cover the cost of the degree that they require. What is truly useless is the way we assign value to those jobs. When a high school teacher has students working in food service who make comparable wages, it's not the degree or the university's fault. It's the fault of a culture that believes we don't have to pay anyone a livable wage regardless of what their skills and qualifications are.

@@fairywingsonroses If you want to work in education, then you need the degree. There are also plenty of people making decent money in education, but the starting salary is fairly low. Anyone wanting to do that should know all this before they start. The real issue is all the people that get some random degree with no plan at all. Of the ones that graduate, more than 40% don't even use the degree, so they wasted time and money obtaining it. That doesn't even include all the ones that drop out before they graduate. The biggest pushers of the degree = financial success narrative are the ones directly benefiting from it, the ones selling the degrees. The ones falling for it are mostly women.

I'm Vietnamese-American (2nd gen), and I'm 36 years old and for 12 years, I couldn't get a job despite graduated with an AA in biotechnology in 2012 along with 4 summer of internship at NIH. After I graduated in 2012, I been searching for more then 100+ jobs and nobody ever bother to call me in for a interview. This still happens to me even to this day. And I'm not alone, there was a viral TikTok post from a girl (who is white) who graduated with a I think BS or Master's in business, and she stated that she couldn't get any job and call college a "scam". And I hate to agree with her, I think it could be. Even some professors called the "go to college to get a better job" a big lie.

Also most people go to college in things they can't start themselves. Being self employed is always an option if you have a a real skill

Sadly, I've heard of Ph.Ds being unemployed/jobless (and a lot of them on food stamps and social security). I've encountered a Ph.D person who graduated 6 years ago, and that person can't get a job. Encountered another Ph.D person who graduated 10 years ago and still unemployed/jobless probably even to this day.

That's true. Women's studies, social work, sociology are female dominated and poorly paid and/or have no jobs

They weren't saying men don't experience these things, but that women have another layer of obstacles, trying to make "connections" in often male-dominated industries. And I don't know what folks expect, young adults take thier short-human lives seriously, if I'm gonna work in the US, with all of its corprate-anti-citizen greed bs, of course I wanna work for the rest of my life in the career/topic I'm passionate about. And most millennials, gen z & zillennials know that college is supposed to provide a big edge for internships & programs, but most American colleges these days aren't preparing thier students with the proper skill levels or other requirements to get those vital early first steps into those industries. And getting these "connections" is even harder for black people, since well that should be obvious. The idea that college was a gateway to dream jobs or dream careers just isn't there anymore.

Nothing new either - underemployment amongst college-educated women. It's been described by economists such as Levitt: at a point, the majority of college-educated women ended up becoming... stay at home mothers, because college had enabled them the opportunity to meet a wealthy husband. It's a less sordid form of underemployment, but underemployment nonetheless.

I think if you look at the numbers, you will find that the majority of upper management positions are filled by men. When they go to hire someone, they are often going to hire the person they relate to, which is unfortunately often another man. It's not surprising that women are having difficulty breaking into some of these career fields.

@@fairywingsonroses That may be true, but it's not "the problem." The majority of people will never be upper management anyway, male or female. The ability to get a job right out of college has nothing to do with hiring at the upper management levels.

Marketing doesn't require a degree. It requires experience and knowledge of the subject you are trying to market. Therefore the degree doesn't guarentee a job. That's not necessarily the students fault for not understanding, the school should have made it very clear that it's s weak degree in the job market

That sounds great to be honest. I got MIS degree and a year and a half later can’t get a job with it. Making 16 an hour at a desk job pushing papers for 2.5 years. Can’t ever dream of 120k🥲

I am happy for you. You cannot go wrong with Cybersecurity and it is one of the hottest areas nowadays. It all comes down to picking a practical field and what is relevant in the current market 😊.

I love my mother but go to my father for life advice he’s a good man. Hope you have one in your life. My father knew what was coming and said 80% of degrees will be useless soon and he knew 50% of people who graduated wouldn’t be working at the job they went to college for and would be in serious debt. It has to do with you following THEIR curriculum or making your own. College is about knowledge no a career. At least originally. You go to get smarter so you and THINK of ways to MAKE your own way. With a Marketing Degree why isn't she marketing something?

According to the Fed there are abundant "employment opportunities", they publish figures showing record job openings each month and use those figures to justify maintaining interest rates at a certain level. What is never mentioned is qualitative information about those "opportunities". In other words, how on Earth is a college graduate supposed to feel as excited as Jerome Powell about jobs being advertised by McDonald's and Subway?

@@larrystaley21 It's not about having a spouse that can help. It's about the fact that I couldn't help myself. If I didn't have a supportive husband (and I didn't for several of those years), I'd be completely financially destitute.

And colleges have become quite anti-male. I'm black and I started college and a PWI (predominantly white institution) in the early 70s. At the time, there was still a lot of anti-black prejudice among the white students and faculty. I know what that looks like, and I see it being applied to white male students today.

There's more opportunities for women - accounting,nursing, psychology, teaching etc. Men would rather learn a trade like truck driving or welding

Not really, since virtually every business that exists needs to have marketing activities in order to grow. Businesses that don't have notoriety don't grow, as their customer base is simply unaware of their existence. Now whether marketing degrees do teach useful stuff is another entirely different story. Anyway, if I were you I wouldn't be blowing my own trumpet too loud because accounting and audit are two prime candidates to face the threat of AI.

Louisiana _requires_ high school seniors to apply for college loans on the theory that when they see the money is available, they'll go to college...whether they are prepared or not. You earned point for stuff, like my first hunting knife or radio. Then Jr. HS had a paper route. Learned how to build a house before I left my parent's house. BUILT my first house by myself at 19. Kids/people today make SO MANY excuses. I've had lots of low level jobs and hired away to better positions when my work spoke for itself. I've traveled all over the country and a dozen others never had an issue with unemployment or housing. never when back to live with my mom until she was on her death bed and I stay for a few weeks remodeling her kitchen. @@sunset.orange it's a toss-up but I would say there are states that have greater opportunities than others it's been a known fact since the '80s that some states haven't gotten their stuff together like Mississippi in states like Texas has got their stuff together where I reside at that's the reason why I made that comment cuz there's more job opportunities and quality of life better in Texas than than Mississippi and in fact Texas probably has better opportunities than most southern states in the Union because Texas has a GDP of around $2 trillion dollars while everybody else only has a few hundred billion dollars in GDP
