Unbelievable musicians but - let's be honest - at this point their egos were just as big as their skills. Fela was already behaving like a dick and Tony Allen would leave the next year. This is very far from being raw african music. Try some german/french recordings from the 50's or 60's for some RAW shit. Music Republic Blog has some SICK stuff from all over Africa - by far the most musically rich place on the planet.

I'm happy to be member of MOP ( movement of the people ) I met Fela & the band in 1968 @ Ojuelegba , Idi Oro Lagos .His musics & messages can not be dublicated .I called him the chief priest .I missed him . His last summer concerts @ Madison in 1996 , I was there with my wife .He passed away 1997 . Fela was just 59years old , much to say about Fela , Is gone ,but his messages lives forever .Rest in heaven till we meet again . 😂😅😍

Fela was a prophet. A multi-talented musician. Could sing, dance, play the drums, trumpet, piano etc. What of the yabis? His shoes are too big. No replacement for Fela. His full band was up to 60 people plus the drivers, cooks etc. His children are trying but for me, Fela was just too much!.

I like that there are so many musicians/instruments. It's like the funk bands of that same era. A dense, layered sound that has not been sullied by the computer technicians touch. This is real music by real musicians. And I like that it also has a spiritual dimension although I don't really get that part.

Only the few whose parents must have had an encounter with Fela Kuti ,can know what he really represents in music, politics, psychology and spirit of the people of Nigeria in his time. It may take another century to experience such again. God bless his soul.
