Beautiful performance! If you're curious, you can also view on KZfaq the North American premiere, with soprano Pierrette Alarie in a 1959 Radio-Canada telecast. Worth watching!

Amazing! Lott is unsurpassed in this French repertory, every word, every musical note has meaning and emotion. She's an incredible performer.

@@sts.5205 I love Duval's singing in this repertory, but in my view, all things considered - including, of course, sheer vocal performance -, Duval and Lott are generally equals, so I wouldn't say that, IMO, Duval clearly surpasses Lott.

Mr. Johnson gets the piano accompaniment right. Others don't, quite egregiously. I could point to examples here on KZfaq, which is a shame when the singer deserves better support.

Francis Poulenc wrote, "the single role of 'The Human Voice' should be taken by a young and elegant woman. This is not a play about an aging woman abandoned by her lover."

Well, that was Poulenc's view, though not necessarily that of Jean Cocteau, who wrote the original play. Very few young singers have the depth of life experience to go all the way, either vocally or dramatically into this "tragedy of the ego" as Poulenc called it. I am so grateful that Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson made this video version, a great supplement to her superb recording (made 10 years earlier) with the Orchestre de la Suiss Romande under Armin Jordan. I should also note that in 1979, when I was working at San Francisco Opera, the role of Elle in La Voix Humaine was played by Magda Olivero, who was 69 at the time... 🙂

Imagine holding your arm in that position throughout the entire performance! If I were the director, I think I'd update it to her having a headset like customer support people do, or speakerphone. Is this the only 1 woman opera? It seems it would be really hard on the singer because she carries the entire opera on her shoulders and never has the camaraderie of a cast to work with.
