Part 1 of the the Tu-154 Step-by-Step series. Using X-Plane 10 we start at Sofia, Bulgaria in Felis' Tu-154M. We're on Stand 13 and the aircraft is cold and dark. A simplified sim-friendly startup is performed the we depart Runway 09 on the OGOTA departure. The initial climb is flown using radio aids then on to the KLN90 for departure and enroute.
I've tried to simplify the start up in order to make the model more accessible, in later videos we'll examine the systems in a bit more detail. Videos are done in one take with minor mistakes left in. (I know I've probably said knots for km/h and percent for degrees at least once!)
Finally, I'm recovering from a slight cold at the time of recording - apologies if that affects the narration slightly ;-)
Errors and omissions:
1: Aft CG is not permitted for normal commercial flights, only empty ferry trips. (Thanks tchouzebra)

Thanks for the video. I just purchased the plane 2 days ago, and will have to learn how to start it using your vid. It really looks good and I like it. I am surprised it doesn't get much consideration. I have all the medium and long range planes (i.e 757, Ultimate A320, JAR A320, FJS 727s and 737 V3, JAR A330, MD 80, 747...) and was looking for something new, and this really does it. Can't wait to fly it.

It’s a really nice model and a lot of fun to fly. Make sure to try the NVU navigation, it’s very interesting and there’s a really helpful calculator in the forums. Do you have the SSG 747-8? If so, how do you find the systems compared with, for example, the Rotate MD80?

@@ReflectedRealitySimulations Yes! I finally figured out how to start it up during the weekend thanks to your video and it is pretty rewarding. I should get better at it. I really like that plane and still don't understand why it is so much under the radar. As for the SSG/VMAX 747, yes I own the version of that which comes with the Intercontinental Advanced and the freighter version. Although I have never tried the freighter. As far as systems go, if you mean FMC, it's different from the MD80 for example (ie MD80 have to set hydraulic and flaps before you get VSpeeds) but equally as good. SIDs/STARs, VNAV work well IMO. I would closely relate this to the B757 style FMC. It flies great like that. But doesn't look from your videos that you own that. Again I am no specialist, just an enthusiast, but to put it simply everything my IXEG FMC or FF A320 Ultimate MCDU for example can do for me, the 747 FMC can do. It's a great plane. Did a quick short 45 minute flight yesterday to remember exactly how it is, since I have around 30 payware aircraft I may not fly one for a few weeks and just switch depending on my mood, and frankly it was quite enjoyable. Unfortunately I can't go too much in depth about the technical aspect of things, but if you have specific questions I could probably try and be more precise. Great plane.

@@vasily2022 I have most of those and a few others, and 2 years late to the question, I find the ssg747 version 1 was really really bad. Version 2 wasn't much better, even with the latest update that came out recently this year. The SSG modules out of the 10 or so XP11 paywares I own, is easily the lowest quality, most basic, oversimplified and that's reflected in the relatively cheap price. I'm not really sure how the FMC's compared 2 years ago, it was unusable and even now, after a couple of in-flight edits, the nav display shows a line that's completely wrong. It's one of my very few module regrets

Thank you for taking the time to make these excellent videos tutorials. It is a joy to hear knowledgeble people share their skills. Flightfactor is said to soon release something that should be as close as you can come to a a320, way above anything on the market. If true and if they really simulate every system and sensor as they claim, it would be a dream to see you make the same high quality content as you have done for the Tupolev and the others ☺️

Thanks Jimmy, yes i'm looking forward to seeing the new A320 from FlightFactor. I don't have any of their aircraft currently - I'm sure the 757/767 are very good but things like the cabin crew calls sort of put me off as it's like a "game" feature, and slightly distasteful in the earlier versions if I remember correctly. If they get the A320 right it will probably be one of the most misunderstood and frustrating aircraft to fly in the sim to begin with - wait for all the forum comments like "the auto-thrust is buggy" as simmers don't seem to consider the flight directors - in reality it's a very good machine and very very easy to operate, but it does have a few quirks! The only concern I have is from the videos and screenshots I've seen they seem to be simulating an older version of the FMGC software (it's not been like that for probably 5 years) - however I don't know what their reference source is.

At tu 154, use of autothrottle is only permitted for landing. Otherwise you must always be manual.
@ReflectedRealitySimulations

Thanks Michael, yes I do know that, and I think I mentioned that in the video. My reason for using it is that while the real thing may not allow that (or autopilot use at a lower altitude) the real aircraft would have a crew of at least three, whereas that’s not the case in the simulator so a little bit of assistance from the automation seems OK to manage the workload. Hope that makes sense?

Thanks for the video - been thinking about getting this plane. Does it have any custom failure from misusing/overloading systems?
@ReflectedRealitySimulations
@ReflectedRealitySimulations 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Matthew - I'm afraid I don't know about custom failures. As I mentioned in one of the videos I've never completed a flight without getting something wrong anyway! However it's a very complicated and satisfying machine to operate. The KLN90B does seem to cause the occasional crash but the Tu154 itself is very good value for money. Felis has the Yak 40 and An 24 available for download now - perhaps that would give you an insight into the level of modelling?

When choosing the SID (OGOT4A) you mentioned that the first part of the departure has to be hand flown. Can you please elaborate on this? I still do not own the aircraft so I can't really check what it's all about. Can't you fly an entire SID after you have loaded it? Why do you need the radios when you have the procedure in the KLN?
@ReflectedRealitySimulations
@ReflectedRealitySimulations 4 жыл бұрын
The departure route on the KLN database was incomplete. It had the first named waypoint, but not the actual route to get to that waypoint. I’ve never flown with a real KLN90 so I don’t know if that’s a “real” thing or not. The KLN is certainly a generation before things like the GNS430. There is also a real difference in capability between a GPS driving a course deviation indicator (fairly easy to do, autopilot treats the GPS exactly the same as a VOR) and have the GPS Navigator feed roll commands to the autoflight system (much more complicated). I believe GPS/FMS fitted 737-200s also have this sort of issue. In summary, a retrofit GPS is very unlikely to be able to provide FMS style navigation. How that makes sense?
