In this video I show you how to improvise a pulley system using a swiss army knife as your only tool.
I explain the three advantages of a pulley and i try to measure the mechanical advantage of such a system.

Excellent video! Bushcraft/survival uses for pulley & pulley systems: 1. Lower container to get water without leaning or reaching over where drop to water level is considerable or footing is too slippery. 2. Raise food container to height where bear can't reach it. 3. Build/access elevated platform shelter: raise platform, fireplace and shelter building materials without danger of being pulled over or fatigue 4. Use counterweight to automatically raise trapped food animal too high for fox, coyote, wolf, bear, etc to eat it before you get it. Use basket at top to shield from birds. 5. Use counterweight to help climb repeatedly to access elevated location ( ensure separate safety line to prevent uncontrolled descent) 6. Use pulley system to haul improvised boat on to beach or launch into water 7. Use pulley system to drag large game animal from difficult/ unsafe location/ position to process location 8. Use pulley to draw bowstring on heavy improvised crossbow, use pulley to assemble crossbow, use pulleys as crossbow components 9. Use pulley for fishing or fish trap rig

I use a very small set of pulleys to lift counter weights for my snare setups to get large game off the ground. If I get let's say a deer size animal off the ground, I get a very quick kill and take the advantage off having the ground to dig in and escape. Also since I live in bear county, all of my shelters are minimum 10' off the ground and make it easy to get building materials up in the trees. It's really cool seeing a bushcraft version of my modern set. I will try this when making a large bear deadfall next time. Love it!

I'm not sure what sort of game animals that you have were you live (where do you live exactly, BTW), but in the US we hunt several species of deer as well as bear, elk, moose and wild pigs. Those are heavy animals that can weigh between 70 kg and 700 kg and are often lifted in the air to field dress, age and butcher, sometimes it's all done in the field. A pulley system like this would be very useful for that task. We also go off into the woods on four wheeled ATVs and motor bikes and get ourselves into trouble by thinking "I can make it through that, no problem". The ability to construct a system like this could be very handy for when we are wrong. LOL I can see this being very useful when constructing larger more permanent structures in the woods as well. Another winner for team Immler!

Pulley systems are a blast to play with. I like your version better than store bought, which are very expensive. For even more fun add a double pulley system to the end you are pulling, just remember it takes an enormous amount of rope. Thanks for sharing Felix.

I have a small strong all-metal pulley in my pack already tied to one end of my main cordage. If nothing else it lets me cast a line over a high branch quickly and it's rated for a 100k load. If the weight bothers you lighter versions are made.

HI! I wanted to tell you about a customization that I invented, I discovered that under the screwdriver near the magnifying glass in the swisschamp, there is enough space to put two small matches or one big one. the big one is practical because it fits inside, the small ones are two, but if you use the screwdriver often they don't get stuck. before now I didn't think they were that hard to light matches so I found an easy method to add the rough part of the box on the boxknife! on the back, in the largest slot, it is possible to put that part with double-sided adhesive, or by buying special strips to glue for matches. it works really well!

Awesome video. I love the intersection between bushcraft and engineering, because 1) it's a ton of fun to play with contraptions like this and 2) it may not seem too useful in a typical bushcraft temporary survival situation, but it will be extremely useful in a long-term one that isn't just about surviving but about thriving. So far your channel is one of the very few I've found (Advoko makes is also cool) that covers this intersection. Keep up the amazing work!

Something like this could be used for a DIY Dam for water diversion from a main source. Say to run a mini water wheel or fill a pool.

Felix, two words: Compound Bow. =^D. That popped into my mind at 10:22 when you said you "need two" and pulled out the second pulley. Thanks for a fantastic video! And hoping for a compound bow bushcrafted with a Swiss Army Knife!

Im real surprised how sturdy and strong you’re carved version is, but you’ll never know if you don’t try and you’re the one who is thinking out of the box and try 👍👍👍 great explanation and demonstration, in my case I’m lazy in such things as you know 😅 so I use just two carabiner for it, works the same way, would be interesting to find out which method has more friction, rope on the metal of the carabiner or wood of wood on your system? Thanks for sharing, Taro
