Fell In A Grave - Abandoned Cemetery!
Filmed in Tong, Bradford.
A cemetery that has been totally abandoned and cant really find much about it on-line.
Its a fascinating place, as the few visible headstones seem to resemble some incredible burials. I have no idea who is buried in this forgotten land, but I will do some further digging (pardon the pun).
Very difficult to film , as you can see we spent most of time fighting the overgrowth and the nettles in the area.
Wish we were better prepared and had gloves etc, but too be honest we didn't know what to expect.
I suppose that's part of the adventure.
Watch out for my Buddy who fell into a collapsed grave. Thankfully he was ok and we carried on.
It might be an idea to visit this in winter when all the growth has withered away!
RIP for those that lay in the cemetery.

Found the death listing for the last headstone you cleared of. Emma Rhodes died Oct 7 1960 aged 93. Emma was a spinster who lived at 3 Merton Place, Tong Street. She appears to be the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Rhodes who lived in the Tong area. Thomas was a coal miner from Yorkshire, while Sarah was from Ireland. It's criminal that cemeteries like these are allowed to become abandoned and overgrown.

@Bradford Through The Lens basically there was a grave yard in wyke which we worked on when i did voluntary work. And if u have all the equipment then it is possible to get the work done In a couple of weeks but u do need atleast 20 volunteers so the work gets completed quickly.

I’m currently researching my family tree and it all just ties in and is fascinating. I’m sitting here with my 1849 map of Bradford but sadly the furthest east it goes is Sticker Lane.

Very very interesting. I do genealogy & always looking for baptism & burial records. I wonder if any of mine are buried in any of these forgotten graveyards. I'm from Keighley originally, but going back to the mid 1800's I had some ancestors that actually worked in Barkerend mills they lived next to it. I live close in BD3, which is a weird coincidence, my ancestors calling me back to Bradford.

I have a lot of family in tong cemetery .but i am now frightened of visiting any of my family in Schoolmoor ,bowling and tong alone its so sad. My grandad is in Tong cemetery he only had a small wooden cross ,as many could not a ford tomb stones .He died after returning home from the 2nd world war due to gangerine in his legs . These crosses would have rotted away by now and so many graves are now unmarked.

In Germany it is law for families to upkeep their family graves they can get fined if they do not, in Germany they have lots of laws that maybe we should have like keeping your paths within a certain area clear of ice and snow, but the graveyard one i think is a good one. In Milton Keynes where i now live and in Slough they cremate rather than bury and you pay for a plot for 10 years and you or family member have to keep up to the 10 year payments, other wise you lose it but they are ashes memorials different from body burials. In Milton Keynes you can only be cremated no choice unless you have a family plot in one of the local church cemetaries.

i lived on holmewood and there used to be a tunnel in that graveyard that went for miles, in the late 1980's me and few mates used to walk it until we got bored, we never got to the end tho.

I think it was abandoned because the church in front of it was demolished for the widening of Tong street (which never happened). If you come up Wakefield road, towards Tong, have you ever noticed the amount of green hills on your right, particularly after Highfield? This is because of compulsory purchase orders by the council. My grandparents had to move also. They lived next door to the Holme Lane Tavern. Tong Liberal club was demolished and the council paid for it to be rebuilt a few yards further back. That's why it looks newer than most buildings around it (because it is). I may be wrong but I think the whole widening programme was scrapped due to the potential upheaval of Tong cemetery. Tong street is green all the way up to the cemetery gates on that side. Now I've told you, you can't unsee it. I can maybe get a couple of pictures of when buildings were there.

I did leave another comment but appears to have gone missing... I grew up exploring here too... I also remember the air raid shelters with the soot marks on the ceiling, and lots of rubbish, not far from what used to be Nettos when first built, I assume you have looked at the nls website, old maps... It does show the congregational church and Sunday school and broadstone way was called butler street... I would be interested to read if you find out more as this cemetery always had me curious as a child although I was there around 85....

There is a small abandoned graveyard on Tong Street next to farmfoods, my mum told me back in the 70s there was this one grave that was open and you could see the remains of a person from an old grave. it could be a topic worth looking into because they may destroy that graveyard within a few years.

@@thehouse8450 If you search the British Newspaper archives you will find quite a few references to this chapel. I searched on "holme lane chapel" and it came up with a very interesting reference to W E Forster. The original William Halstead also had a connection and he was closely connected with Abram Peel. There could be some very important people from Bradford's past buried here. Not Forster but maybe others. The West Yorkshire Archives should be able to tell you if any burial records exist and Bradford Family History may know more about this place.
