I always try to keep it simple - we all do pretty well in nature with 1 (very bright!) light source during the day! My one comment is that the backlighting with a soft frontal bounce fill is definitely the most sophisticated/cinematic look - so for drama this would usually be a go-to setup...

Another great video in the box :) Really loved the phonecam vs dedicated cam at the end - lots of creators talk about using what you have, without showing what those results might look like, which makes it impossible to easily understand what is and isn’t achievable with a phonecam and set a certain level of what to expect - I’ve been testing and testing different light setups with my iPhone X, and constantly hit that «am I doing something wrong, do I need better lights or did I hit the limit for what I can achieve with my phonecam» - and seeing your comparisons for these examples I quite easily see that getting more/better lights is probably not gonna help and getting a better / dedicated camera will definitely help - So thanks for a really solid overview of what’s possible, and please keep doing the pro cam vs phone cam comparisons when there is time and it’s relevant, it really helps to understand the possibilites and limitations for pushing existing gear before upgrading, and peace of mind when it comes to the «is it me or the gear» situation :)

Awesome video, I learnt so much on how to use a singular light. One of the biggest struggles I've had with lighting, is lighting a room and a subject with just one light. I use a lantern modifier to accomplish this which works quite well. Could we maybe get a solution on creative ways to mount multiple lights using one stand? Working in a tiny kitchen, and not being able to hang things from the ceiling, I can only have one stand without tripping over myself. Would be great to see a compact multi light setup.

This was very helpful just to understand the different approaches I can use with a single light. I'm in the process of researching lights so I'm not limited to window lighting anymore. Ive been looking casually at the GVM 80 and maybe the aperature amaran 100. I see that you have a video right on the end screen for the godox vs amaran so I will certainly check that out and see if you have a video on the GVM vs amaran.

Can I find out your lovely lighting setup for the narration part of this video please?

Curious if you adjusted the brightness of the lights for the iPhone takes. I know the different in dynamic range is pretty significant between the Canon and the iPhone (and there's no way around that), but it really struck me how crushed the highlights looked on the iPhone footage. Though, what I've noticed in shooting on my own phone (Pixel3) is that everything will look great on the screen, but even recording with something like FilmicPro, the footage in Premiere just looks crushed to all hell. I imagine that's a huge benefit of multiple lights-even on small budget-is that you can bring the background and subject just the little bit closer together, in terms of brightness, if you're limited to something like an iPhone or older DSLR.

Amazing video and super helpfull . How far and how high from the subject would you say I should place a 90cm softbox for a rembrant look? I find it hard to get a soft and nice looking image, especially as I'm getting old and got bags under my eyes :D

Hey Heather, I am inquiring about an outdoor portable light to fill in-I have the LitraPro which is not strong enough to use from a great enough distance. I was looking at the Godox ML 60Bi but it doesn’t look strong enough (I have the SL150 and I love it). So what would you recommend, that can be at least a few feet away from the subject, possibly handheld like the ML 60Bi? Thank you.

Do I need light if my face radiates light itself?

Wow, they always talk about how the iphone is such a great camera. This really shows that it doesn't look good at all. Clearly the camera shots are better.

As a working video pro I can share that Tube lights make a TERRIBLE key light and shouldn't even be recommended. If the only light you have is a Tube Light, then using it with the Bounce Method [into a white card, reflector, or even off a wall] will give a MUCH better result - and be less bothersome for your subject.
