I need specialty medical care when certain things happen with my medical condition (I've been seeing my specialists in Boston for 17 years), and when she tried to go talk with Tricare about me needing to fly to MA during a medical emergency, they brushed her off and let me sit to deteriorate in agony for 6 days. Then, my tall, white, uniformed father walked in, told them the same story she had been telling them, and they made it happen right away. TL;DR: It was nice to read about a fellow gay serving my country, and the fact that your Japanese husband's surname revealed your identity and made our pasty skeleton of a Governor uncomfortable is glorious.

As a US citizen, I can confirm that ex-felons are not considered fully human here (nor are they considered fully human in prison considering the current state of things). After leaving prison, you cannot vote, own firearms, or be applicable for most jobs. The last one is probably the most concerning, as every job application by default asks about your criminal record regardless of position. I'd wonder how any ex-felons actually manage to get a job to support themselves, but considering the majority end up going back to prison, I expect the answer is that they can't.

Sorry but that is fucked up. If you get a felony on your record odds are that was pled down from a greater charge yet it was still enough to revoke your right to vote. I don't think you should get that right back unless there are some very extreme circumstances behind the conviction. This stems from the idea that when someone is in prison, he or she is temporarily but entirely removed from society and therefore shouldn't be allowed to engage in election. AA is composed of alcoholics both former and current. Someone with addiction doesn't want to hear someone who's never been there tell them what to do. So that man is doing exactly what he should... Helping others with addiction.

That is part of the "punishment" half of crime and punishment. The people of the state of Florida still generally feel that a willful disregard of our societal norms kinda precludes you from ever getting to have a significant say in what those societal norms are. Alabama, my home state, where women’s bodies are policed by men and babies are born into conditions they didn’t ask for and that aren’t rectified by the state. Where women may be forced to risk THEIR lives for a pregnancy they didn’t want. The underlying problem is that these same men face no consequences for having sex, but we can face dangerous pregnancies and the lifetime commitment to a child or the emotional toll of giving one up. Some states are justifying what is essentially a ban by using 6 weeks. VERY FEW women would know they are pregnant at 6 weeks. That’s a ban, they just don’t want to call it that. My state passed their law in anticipation of the almost certain overturn of roe b wade as were now seeing. I’ve also taught pregnant 12 year olds. We suspected one was impregnated by a family member but can only report it. Either way, it does not matter. Unless the father is also 12 years old, it’s illegal or at the least morally repugnant . She has no choice anyway, because her family has to give permission for an abortion or even adoption. I know one was forced to keep the baby because her family said “we don’t give up blood”. She did not want to be a mother. She eventually dropped out and has fortunately been able to get her GED, but that child (the baby, as child applies to the mother as well) has been shuffled through a million family member’s homes with no stability. She is now old enough to want to do right by the child but is facing custody issues. It’s all ducked up.

These panelists are passing judgment on the man's character, after speaking with him for 10 minutes, and concluding he isn't worthy to have his voting rights restored. The amount of religious, racial, class, and political bias demonstrated in these hearings is unbelievable.

Soraya Imperial Basically you have to be a threat to the democracy of the nation or to the nation itself, for example voting fraud, or terrorism. In practice this punishment has almost never been used and the last case it was used, to my knowledge, was years ago.

It would usually be things like fighting for terrorist organizations or people who tried to violently overthrow the government. I couldn't find an article about a single instance where someone had their voting rights revoked but I can tell you how many people have their voting rights revoked, that number is 56 as of 2016 according to Statistics Netherlands

American prisons are for-profit institutions. Reform and rehabilitation is not the goal our prison systems.... Making money is. Private citizens can buy prisons and run them with little regulation or oversight. And since these wealthy prison owners want to attract public investors they love presenting their high recidivism rates. That's the number of people who come back to prison after getting out. The higher the rate.... the more prisoners you have.... the more money you make. You think they want these people reformed? You think they are investing in education or drug rehab or anything else? They leave with no money.... no place to go.... can't get a job being a felon.. So you come back again and again... so they can make money off you again and again. Capitalism is a great thing..... If you're already rich.
